Parent employment question

My husband is currently out of work. This was due to a change in leadership at his former company. He received a severance package when he left. He is currently looking for a job but has enough saved that he can be choosy and not rush until the right job comes along. We are full pay and have college savings put aside.

My D is filling out her common app. Under employment status for her dad, should she list unemployed or retired? He’s not really retired but I’m worried unemployed might make them wonder if we will be able to pay.

What are your thoughts?

They do not care if you can pay for college. They admit people all the time who CAN’T pay. Most schools are need blind and the admissions office admits those who are qualified.

You want to tell the truth, I think it’s a legal document. Say he’s unemployed, if a college asks tell them your situation. They should be happy to find out you’re paying more than they expected instead of less than they expected.
