parent got deported, i live on my own. how do i get financial aid

OP here,
I am a US citizen and have lived in CA my whole life.
My parents are divorced. My dad lives in a different country and have not heard from him since i graduated high school.

It is possible that all turns out well. Deported mom might have family, friends , resources where she has gone to be able to get back on her feet quickly. But to have an unexpected forced ejection out of this country, can bring a lot of issues to the student who might well have been depending upon going back home for the summer, for example, and maybe there is no longer a home available. Without all of the facts, it’s impossible to say what the situation is, but we do want to try to cover the most dire possibilities.

If there was a zero EFC anyways, then the student is going to be eligible for maximum aid anyways, and Kelsmoms is saying this could be the best way to go. The student, in any case, should be discussing the situation with the Dean of students, advisors, support staff as well as with fin aid to see what resources are available to meet the students needs during this transition. Hopefully, things do get straightened out quickly, but for the student, we want the situation to be optimal for smooth riding until it is, and for all resource to be on the table with requirements and availability right there.

Are you attending a CSU or UC?

im attending at a csu

Your question boils down to Cal grant eligibility. You should contact them immediately. They are the ones to answer your questions. CA has come up with some programs for kids who are here illegally in terms of getting aid. Though they don’t seem to cover kids who ARE here legally, my understanding is that they will cover them as well, but you need to talk to someone who is hands on with these programs to make sure you get the best advice for your situation.
