parent monthly income&expenses statement

I got this email from cornell university that they need my parents to fill out a parent montly income&expense statement.

I don't think everyone has to fill this out, is anything going wrong with my financial aid application??

this statement asks me so many things even like expenses for food and household, clothing, utilities(gas , electric, phone , water, etc.) , public transportation .

and for sources of income it says "you must provide documentation of all sources of income that are used to meet expenses. examples of acceptable documentation include pay stubs, letter from emplyers, promissory notes, and credit card statement.

anyone else got this letter or had got it in the past??

please , i need advices !!

Are you an international?

Are you low income and the school is wondering how your family pays living expenses? Was there something unusual that you mentioned in your FA app…such as a special circumstance or something?

i am a low income student. but im not international. I think what u said is kinda right that they are wondering about how my family pays expenses. but i never put any special circumstances or anything :(…

If you put that your family has a very low income, then the school may be wondering if your family has some hidden source of funds that is paying for your food, housing, utilities, cell phone, transportation, etc. What is paying for those things?

I don’t really know the details about those. im just worrying that if there is anything disadvantageous for my application : (…

Was your income VERY low?

If so, they just want your family to show how they are paying their bills. As long as your info is honest, you have nothing to worry about.

If you don’t know the details, then you can’t fill out the form, your parents have to do it. They know how things are getting paid for. You need to ask THEM what the answers are.

how much is considered as really low??

they ask me for the proofs of sources of income. but i already submitted my parents’

W2 forms which shows the amount of money that they earn.

I will ask them. and i just found out i wrote “My fathehr is self-employed and his income is not very consistant” on special circumstances part on my FAFSA app. do you think this is why??

I’m wondering if they are thinking that too many deductions were claimed on your dad’s business resulting in an income that would be too low to live on.

There isn’t really anything we can do here…your parents have the answers, they need to put in the information…honestly.

Self-employed parents’ incomes/deductions are often strongly looked at by these “full need” schools because too often too many deductions are taken which give a false “low income”. That may not be the case with your family, but the school may want to know for sure.

what if ,in case, that is my case ??

and there is one part that say “OTHER ASSISTANCE SOURCES”

and they want me to provide the documentation either.

If my parents are getting assistance from my uncle, what kind of form should i provide??

What is this? Did they recently ADD a “special circumstances” part to the FAFSA? You must be referring to the CSS Profile which Cornell ALSO requires. As far as I know…there is no such spot on the FAFSA.

To the OP…you need to send whatever the college is asking you to send. Especially with self employed…some of the “business expenses” are not allowed. For example…if your family has part of their home, or their car as business expenses that significantly reduce your net income…this very well could be added back in. Ditto other business expenses that are not always related to business (phones, computers, travel…etc).

Cornell is trying to figure out HOW you arrived at your AGI. This is a very important question for them to have the answers to. Just be honest…and that is that. Your parents will have to provide the necessary info.

Re: the money from your uncle…call and ask Cornell.

What you are being asked for is not uncommon, and you don’t need to worry. When income is quite low, this form is often required. Just ask your parents to complete it. Everything will be fine!

Yeah i meant CSS profile part. This is getting complicated :frowning:

and in the source of income part, appropriate document can be letter from employers,

what kind of letter do they want ? do you know ??

I hope everything will be fine :frowning:

now i feel less worried thank you !

and in the source of income part, appropriate document can be letter from employers,

what kind of letter do they want ? do you know ??

Your parents only need to provide what applies to them. If they have pay stubs to prove income, they send copies of those. What the school is looking for is just proof of whatever income they have. If a relative is helping them out, a signed statement from the relative indicating how much he gave them should work. Your parent should sign it, too.

Then the assistance source proof can be some form of letter with the sign of person who gives assiastance and my parents sign?

also , does the amount of sources income must correspond the amount of income on the tax return? cuz my dad is self-employed and i thought his income doesn’t go on the tax return form or something like that.

Could you please clarify this? If your dad is self employed, he still completes a tax return. He would file whatever schedule is required of the self employed. His income does need to be reported on a tax return if it is in excess of $400 a year. It may very well be that after business deductions are computed, that his income is either very low or nothing (if $0…you would likely have to explain how your family is able to live without any income).

Did your dad FILE a tax return? If so, you should have all of the necessary documentation.

oh then i must have thought it wrong , maybe its deduction that u are talking about.

but still my question is does it have to be same? the amount on tax return and the income that i’ll have to put on the form?

I agree – have your parents complete this form. If on your financial aid forms you showed very low income the college is just asking for verification of how your family paid bills, fed yourselves, funded housing. They are just confirming what you put on your financial aid forms and attempting to understand how your family funded the cost of living. Have your parents fill out the forms, they will know where money comes from that pays the bills. Did they fill check over the FAFSA and Profile before it was sent? If so, you probably don’t have anything to worry about…just send the college what they ask for.
