Parent (PLUS) Loan

Hey guys.

I got a pretty good deal with financial aid at Antioch College. My only concern is that on my award letter they want my parents to take out a Federal Parent (PLUS) Loan for $6,001 for this year. I don't think my parents are eligible (my mom has a student loan that is going to be default soon (it's in forebearance right now), and my parents don't have good credit at all) and even if they were there is NO WAY that this is possible financially. I called the financial aid office and the guy on the phone said that we have to still apply for this loan and if denied then we can apply for an alternate loan. I wanted to know if I could put the $6,001 on one of the loans that will be my responsibility, but apparently not. Anyways, has anyone else dealt with something like this, and is there a way I can take care of the $6,001 without the parent loan? I know pretty much nothing about financial aid stuff . . .

Thanks for any replies. I might not reply for a day or two, I don't have internet at my house.

I think that if your parents are denied a Plus Loan then you get another $4000added to your subsidized loan.

Yes, if your parents apply for and are denied the Parent PLUS loan, you will be given an additional $4000.00 in student loans. After that, you can try applying for an alternative loan in your name...but for many dependent students, the lenders usually want a co-signer.

If your parents are denied the PLUS, and you get the $4000 extra loan, I would also talk to the FA dept and see if they can help with the other $2000, either through work study or grant. If not, work really hard this summer and on vacations! Good luck. I know you can do it.

Also go to finaid.org and apply for scholarships that look possible (or even better, apply for some in your home area)...maybe you can narrow the GAP that way for the first year.

Thanks guys!

I'm actually working on several applications for scholarships right now, so hopefully one of those (or more) will come through. Thanks for telling me about the finaid.org site!
