My son is auditioning at CCM soon. We were told to stay in nearby Kentucky.(just a few miles away) We are driving, not flying. My son is strong in both voice and acting. He has some training in jazz and tap but none in ballet. In your opinion/experience, how much of their decision is based on the dance portion of the audition? Thanks
MTRaleighmom, you are correct. You can go to UC CCM, on the right hand side of the page click on admissions and then click on Check My Status. It will ask you for your username and password. @Wozmom, my daughter is Dramatic Performance so I hope another MT will be able to answer your question. BAL to your son, it’s an amazing place.
We stay at the Hampton Inn Uptown-University. As far as “chances” go for admission at CCM, there always seem to be a mix of some dancers who sing, singers who dance, and actors who do one or the other. Trying to predict the “odds” will ultimately cause anxiety. The common factor I’ve tracked at CCM (looking at the graduating classes since 2011) is that they value fantastic singers, especially big belters.
For 2 years my daughter was in CCM’s Musical Theater Intensive program for high school students wishing to pursue MT as a major in college. There is a huge emphasis on dance in CCM’s program. That is also from talking to parents whose children have graduated from CCM.
Thanks for everyone’s input.
@Wozmom My D just auditioned there last weekend. We stayed at the Marriott Kingsgate just 5 minutes from campus, they have a CCM auditon rate of $107 a night. That info is on the CCM website, unfortunately it wasn’t advertised in the audtion confirmation. I happened to talk to a mom who was there in December and she told me about it. We were too late for the discount, but we were able to use points we had. You could have a lot of time between the dance call and the actual auditon (she was done by 10 and her auditon was at 3:12). It was nice to be so close to the hotel to go back and forth. We parked in CCM parking garage.
AAA offers a $125 rate that includes breakfast. Still, wish I’d known about the audition rate. Too late now.
@puma69 what do you know (I know you lol) were decisions loaded recently?
I would like to audition for CCM in the future years, how much does it cost per year WITHOUT Scholarships?
@BroadwayBella, do you live in Ohio or a neighboring state that might qualify you for in-state tuition?

D is in, and we are here for the accepted student weekend. I think D is worried that the acting training takes a back seat to voice and dance. Any input?
I would have her ask the kids…they are very forthcoming with answers. I know that they are all incredible dancers and singers and my daughter reports that they do Suzuki and Stanislwaski and have an amazing acting, movement and fight professor as well. http://citybeat.com/cincinnati/article-16025-k_jenny_jones.html From what my daughter says they are really strong in all three! If she is basing more on the showcase, it does tend to be the flashy song and dance number. Look at the season, now and past…they do some awesome stuff. And they get top ratings always.
As far as an Acting-emphasis is concerned at CCM: All the MT Students rave about (and at times rage-at) Bubba and his acting classes. It has been THE revelation for my son at CCM. Bubba utilizes “The Cohen Method” based on intention, forward-goal oriented acting rather than method/motivation-oreinted reflective acting. That, mixed with intense “emotional availability” makes for (in my opinion) some dynamic performances. My son also loved Steven Goldstein and Richard Hess. My son says that Acting is infused in every part of his CCM training. If you are dancing-where are you going? What is your goal? How are you connected to others? If you are sword fighting, what do you intend to do? What is your outcome? He feels confident as an actor now, and really talks about acting more than any other aspect of theatre.
My Son just had his Senior Showcase this past weekend and he’s moving to NYC on the 1st. An emotional weekend.
Hi - I haven’t checked on this thread for a while, I hope I’m not too late to help. I feel your concern; This was the same concern my D had when she was looking at CCM - now she’s a Junior (almost Senior - yikes)! My D is an actor/singer or singer/actor depending on the day/opportunity. She feels that with the actor training she has gotten that she has grown immensely. Her second choice school of the ones she got into had a reputation for being very heavy on acting training - and it was a hard choice for her because of that - and, we will never know if she would be a better actor now had she gone there. What she does know is that her acting and her voice - her strong suits - have grown in ways she never could have imagined. And, her dance training - which would definitely not have been as good at her second choice school - has made her a formidable contender - it’s still not her top skill, but the training she’s gotten has definitely made her competitive. The thing with CCM (as I’m sure is true of many schools) is that they have a mix of students with a mix of skills - and every year is different as to what that mix contains - probably dependent on both what they see at auditions and what they need to fill in the gaps of their own mix of students. My Ds year happens to be filled with some very strong actors which push her; are a delight to do scenes with, etc. I know some other classes are made up of more dancer/singers. You don’t necessarily see the “straight acting” so much at the performances or showcases, but in class there is a lot of more classic training, shakespeare, etc. I believe for two boards now out of three (the evaluating sessions at the end of every year) she has done something classical - Checkov at end of Sophomore year and Shakespeare at the end of this year. She was also cast as the lead this year in a musical that was very acting intensive. They aren’t always the MainStage musicals - but they are done. Some years the class make-up is more dance heavy - (I believe every year the constant are pretty incredible singers) - but I’m confident that the professors are able to provide excellent acting training - and those students who excel at acting - I think they know how to push them and make them better. If you are still on the fence as to what school to choose and would like more info about CCM - feel free to PM me.
My son has just finished his junior year. We stayed at the Marriott and the Hampton inn. You can take an uber and go explore downtown or the area called over the rine. It’s a great up and coming area. We have had great experiences in Cincy.
I know I am extraordinarily late to the thread but–can anyone give me thoughts on CCM MT for guys right now? I know the last class had mostly guys and wonder how that impacts next fall’s freshman class, if at all?
To quote @BroadwayBella , this is the same thing I’d like to know. I can’t find a singular total anywhere (I’m from hte south)
Hey does anyone know how likely it is to receive talent money? On their website, I vaguely remember reading that quite a few people are offered small scholarships, but I got my acceptance almost a month ago and I’ve still heard nothing about money or cost except small loans from the FAFSA.
Has anyone negotiated financial aid awards with CCM admissions staff? Lessons learned? Suggestions?
