*I got a 1800 ( 700 Math, 540 Cr, 560 W). It seems like a low score to me and my dad. My dad tells me i won’t get into any college. My high school grades are nothing amazing. In the 10th i got 86% and 11th grade i got 62%

His chances of getting FA is zero if his dad won’t provide his income/assets info (I don’t consider a $5500 unsub loan as FA.)

Also, none of the schools on his list give FA to non-residents anyway. Most of these school wouldn’t give him any merit, either. So, he’ll get charged the OOS rate and have no way to pay for it.

This is not a good list for someone who needs financial help - either FA or merit. He will get into some of these schools, but they’ll expect him to pay the full-freight (ranging from $28k-45k per year)

He’ll need to get his SAT/ACT up much higher for any chance at big merit.

His GPA looks weak. He says that it converted to a 3.75, but if that’s true, his school uses some odd scale.

BTW…Are you sure that you got a 62% average (that is an F average) in the 11th grade???,

I’m starting to wonder if the dad is being stubborn because the student didn’t do well in school during the 11th grade. The dad may be worried that the student would just come here, goof off, and waste his money.

^^^^ or that the dad realizes that he will not get much aid with those scores and that there is no point in applying and then being told “we cannot afford it”.

Re: special circumstances considerations…the college determines IF they will even consider these…they are not automatically considered. There are schools that do not consider special circumstances at all. This is not something anyone should rely on…particularly someone who is living with their family.

“My parents don’t want to pay” is NOT considered a special circumstance by any college I know of.

True! and any consumer debt is also not a consideration.

*or that the dad realizes that he will not get much aid with those scores and that there is no point in applying and then being told “we cannot afford it”. *

The student will surely not get any meaningful merit with those scores at most/all of the schools on the list.

I agree. the dad doesn’t want the student applying, getting accepted, and then have to say, we can’t afford $30k-50k per year for you to go to school in the US.

Im from India and am applying this year.
First of all let me clarify…a 62% in 11th is not as bad as u think…but its not good either. We dont convert marks into grades here, and the standard really goes up in 11th(u catch up by 12th).
However this person ahs not exhibited any spectacular marks.I got a 79% in 11th and the highest in school was an 84%…so class rank wise im good.
However,In India even my parents have this notion that we shud pursue UG in India and PG abroad because to spend all ur parents money in just UG id foolishness.Even im looking for aid…however im looking at only ivies/elite so if i get in,im safe.
Also his/her score in math is very poor.
Hence it is not very encouraging for the parent (my mum is not going 2 let me apply unless i get 800’s on subject tests nd atleast 2300 on SAT1).
This person’s father doesnt seem AT ALL enthu abt UG in US…nd to break off relationship wid ur father fr such a small matter is foolishness.Colleges in India specially DU are amazing too!
I hope this explains it!

But of course,to get into DU for a course of ur choice means you need to have amazing scores.Im keeping that option as my second choice. Are u opting for US coz u knw u cant get the required score in India?

um.Delhi University. New Delhi is the capital of India. The cut off 4 economics(hons) der(in st. stephens college wich is bdw…d best 4 eco in delhi) is 96-97%. its tough to get in

Im looking to a 95% in 12th. Coz my school marks and 12th Board marks are a huge difference coz 11th is an internal xam where the school wants to pull you up a bit…while Boards are all India exams…and plus u study more seriously 4 em. eg,I got a 92.2% in my 10th boards…with 4 a1’s and 1 a2. :)

oh nd bdw…here a1=top 1/8th of all India…and so on…(the grading goes).
Its not like US where even if u get an 81 ur an a2.Its percentile.

I don’t see how you can do this without your parents’ help. Even if you go to schools with big scholarships, a lot of them want to have your FAFSA information. The only alternative I can think of is to come back, work part time, and go to a community college and transfer.
It sounds to me as if it might make sense to come here for grad school, at which time schools often give grants.

It doesn’t matter what you’ll end up at the end of 12 grade…schools won’t see/know that until after acceptances go out. That’s why most school accept based on grades from years 9-11 and maybe grades from the first semester of senior year (which can’t boost much).

our senior semester starts in March-April. The colleges get to see the result of two semesters. Again i must say,the marking scheme of 11th and 12th grade differs. However it depends on wich HS you are in.If its one that goes strict in 11th(eg. you cannot get above 80 in Engish out of 100 which is how my school marks) then youre percentage is sure to shoot up in 12th.Hence the grades in senior year do get a boost atleast in my school.Again it depends on you and ur HS.

Good news about India and senior term. However, I still don’t understand how the student can have such low percentages and yet still think he has a 3.7 GPA. How would that be so?

He says that he go in 60’s and the highest is 90. So its unbelievable 4 me too coz class rank wise also he doesnt sound 2 good.

Even if you calc by dividing ur % by the highest in ur class and multiply by 4…you dont get a 3.7…more lyk 2.78

what dyu think about my scores?
In Junior year Ive a 79% and the highest is 84%.Out of a graduating class of 240…im in the top 7 or 8 at least.
In 10th i got a 92.2%.
In 1st semester senior year,im looking to atleast above an 88%(im planning on topping the batch ) Im looking at ivies/elite with FA.

What are your SAT / ACT scores.

Good luck with ivies, but have some back ups since Americans have a very hard time getting accepted and int’ls from countries like yours have it even harder (since many apply)
