I find it hard to believe that a family that earns $425k a year would really have any discomfort if they only earned - say $350k for 4 years. Remember, this family only has one child.

Agree with most…at that income level there will be no need based aid. If the student wants to take out Staffords to be paid at a later date, FAFSA needs to be filled in. If the student is a high stats student it might be possible to garner some merit aid at less selective colleges. Other than that, $400,000 in income annually does not put this student in any kind of “need category” by any stretch of the imagination. The parents probably realize this and they have every right to fill out the forms on a wing and prayer…or not fill out the forms.

Mom2CK, I have to ask. Don’t mean to offend at all, but you have the HIGHEST number of posts of anyone I’ve ever seen on CC (I mean, even legends like Xiggi don’t come close). By my loose math, you average 45 posts per day, over a 15 month period. How do you manage this?? Are you a “closet moderator” for CC?

I must admit, I have wondered as well. I don’t think that number even includes the Parent Caf

LOL it adds up fast if you “check in” regularly…my number scares me sometimes. So many kids and so many parents with questions…

Parent Cafe posts do count.

I have spent a lot of time the last 2 years on airplanes, in airports (I long lost count of how many different airports I’ve been in during the last 24 months…waaaayyy too many to count), in doctors’ offices, sitting with 3 loved ones during chemo & dialysis treatments (they’re usually napping, while I’m typing), sitting with my dad while he was very ill until he died this August, and sitting while my mom did rehab after 2 major strokes (that was daily for 3 months each time), sitting while my MIL had rehab after she had a major stroke, even spent 2 different weeks sitting next to my dying cat last March at the vet, etc, etc …you get the picture…with a smart phone, a laptop, a netbook and the right kind of connecting stuff, it’s very EZ to be connected from anywhere/anytime.

Since I cry really easily when I’m around loved ones in pain or fighting to recover, this is a good distraction. I make John Boehner look stoic.

Actually, cafe posts do *not *get included in your post count (truly). So your post total is probably *way *higher than 20,000

Mom2CollegeKids: I don’t know what you’re trying to insinuate. I appreciate that you try to help people, but it seems that in half of your 20,000 posts you are either dubious of someone’s situation, or you’re making a condescending comment…

I’m not trying to “convince anyone that that would be an inconvenience”, please don’t put words in my mouth. I asked this question on behalf of my parents, who wanted to know if we would qualify. Its not like they are unwilling to pay the full cost, they just wanted to know if they could get any help. And we know the answer was most likely no. But if aid was available, why wouldn’t we take it?

Also, they probably have around 280,000 after taxes. With college costs being around 60,000 a year, that represents about 1/5th of their annual income after taxes, which brings along an inevitable change in lifestyle. Wouldn’t forking over a fifth of your income be a burden to you? Same thing.

uh ohh…

If I saw that many posts made by myself anywhere (or even all websites combined) I think it would be time to get off. Something would be out of whack.

I suspect you have way more than 3426 'rent, if they included cafe posts. Pretty sure I have more than 7000 ish. Kind of glad they don’t include cafe posts. Not sure I want to know!!

I very rarely go to parent cafe. But even if you have 7000-ish in 4.5 years… that’s not 20,000 in less than a year and half! Not even close. ;)

Hamburglar, do your parents have a college fund for you made up of savings? I would expect your folks to have done some financial planning along these lines. They probably won’t have to pay all your college expenses out of current income.

Hamburglar,

Check to see which schools you are applying to want the Profile in addition to the FAFSA.
As one poster above said, some want Profile for merit.

Maybe you might want to take out A Stafford to have “skin” in the game. Even parents who are able to pay everything sometimes ask their kids to do this. FAFSA is required for this.

Then, many times, the parents will pay off the loan/s if the student did well (however the family defines that).

Hamburglar,
You are most fortunate that your folks are in that income bracket. As lurkness said, since they likely have put $$ into savings/investments/college planning, most posters assume the cost of a full-pay college wouldn’t make a big dent in their lifestyle. Its like buying a higher end car and paying cash. Move some money around… make some $$ liquid that may not be (ie sell some stocks or something). Its doable without seeing any appreciable change in lifestyle.

… and swimcatsmom is correct. Posts in the cafe do not count towards post count. I remember when we would occasionally be disappointed because a thread would get moved from the parents forum (where posts do count) to the parents cafe (where posts don’t add to post count) and our post counts would go down. Same for when a thread gets deleted that was in a forum with a post count. Thread deleted- down goes post count. Seems funny now, but at one point it almost mattered!!

I’m sure that there are plenty of folks with more than the number of posts listed. Remember that the post count is for THAT screenname only…I’m sure there are posters who have changed screennames over the years for one reason or another. If you added together ALL of the posts from their various screennames AND the Cafe, you would get a LOT of posts for that one person:)

As you all can see, I also have a high post count…but it’s over about 7 years.

Now back to the thread title…with an annual income of $425K this poster will not receive need based aid…anywhere.

I’m not sure, but I think that all of us “old timers” have the same Join Date-- August 2004. I know I first joined earlier that year. I remember a long time ago there was a major formatting change; that could have been when it happened. (I don’t think post counts were affected.)

Nah, 1moremom, I dont think the transition from the old to the new forum back 6+ yrs ago has anything to do with the post count or name change. Never understood why my “join date” , transitioning from the old to the new forum in Aug 2004 shows Oct 2004. maybe I did more lurking and less posting back then… Dunno. Its always been a puzzle to me…
