Yes, applying to CMU HSS! It is actually one of my top choices after Barnard!I assumed it was similar in difficulty to Cornell, Northwestern, etc. I have a good chance there?

Pitt would be a safety and a merit aid possibility. However, it is getting late for merit money. Pitt’s application is easy and you probably have an essay you can use. For top merit money, it seems as though 1450 (CR/M) SAT and near-perfect GPA are needed.

You aren’t a shoe-in for Michigan with that GPA unless your unweighted GPA is the same or close…but one never knows for Michigan with OSS kids and I’m assuming LSA. I would bet money that at least one of your EAs will pick you up so I would vote for you are done. I don’t think you need another school right now.

I’m not sure what my unweighted is. I’ve gotten one B- and one B+, and the rest in the A range, so whatever that would be.

Can your parents pay $50K/year for UMich if you are admitted? I know they offer some merit aid for OOS students but it’s extremely competitive.

Even though your list is top heavy I think you have a decent chance of good news from one of your EA schools. I agree that HSS CMU is pretty close to a safety.

I’d probably wait till the EA results come in before sending anything out. Rochester is a good choice, but they “really, really, really, really, really” (that’s a direct quote) want anyone in the Northeast to interview. Where else I’d recommend for a safety would really depend on what you thought you might want to study. Poly Sci, International Relations - try American. Science - almost any of the second tier tech schools (RPI, Case) would love to have you. More general interests: BU? SUNY Geneseo? Clark?

I’m with Gwen Fairfax, I think you are in at Tulane with merit money.

So I’m getting all my essays ready, and just pressing the submit button if I get bad news from Barnard on the 15th.

At this point, I’m just hoping for the best. If don’t get into Barnard and miraculously get ito UChicago, I’ll probably cut my list down a lot to maybe 3 or 4 more.

And not sure of my major! Maybe premed, polisci, nueroscience, stats, history, and physics are all possibilities.

No one is ever a shoe-in at CMU but your basic stats look very good. YOu do have to take two SAT IIs but that is true for a number of the schools on your list so I assume that you have done them and they are above 650.

CMU, I think, does put some emphasis on the “why CMU” essay because, frankly, why would someone choose HSS unless they are also interested in pursuing a minor in one of the tech or science areas, want to be involved in music, theatre or art, or just love pittsburgh? Premed means that you should probably be thinking about sciences rather than humanities, soc sci. You should apply to both MCS and HSS and even the BXS dual program. Your application is viewed by both schools and getting rejected or waitlisted in one school does not affect your chances in the other. The nice thing about CMU is that they are strong in all of these areas and you can always minor in another school. The whole school got a massive infusion of funds so there will be more money for endowed chairs, etc particularly in HSS. Good luck!

Tell your parents they are nuts. With your stats you would have been a strong contender for the Presidential Scholarship which is a free ride - 100% tuition and room/board. Application date to be considered, however, was November 1. You can still apply. At $25k/year, it’s still a bargain compared to the rest of your list.

I don’t know why people have such hangups on Rutgers, as it’s an excellent school with a good reputation. (D1 is freshman - she wasn’t going to apply until she went and fell in love with the program).

PS - you’re good for Tulane. Several kids from our HS were admitted last year with lower stats than yours.

I second mathmom’s great post. I think you look good for Barnard ED, but if not there, you have a very very good chance for Tulane. They roll out their decisions, so you if you submitted your EA app recently you are likely to hear from them even before Barnard. With one acceptance in hand, you won’t have further need for a safety.

I’ll also echo the crowd on Rutgers. We know a friend’s son who did UG there, law school at Harvard and his career is already taking off.

Can’t imagine why you would not apply to Rutgers or TCNJ.
They would be your strong safeties.

You have applied to 5 schools early.

In my opinion, the chances of you NEEDING another safety are remote at best. This whole entire discussion is most likely moot.

If and only if you need another safety, consider McGill or Toronto which go strictly by the numbers and you are in. They are also later deadlines then your other choices. You really don’t have to rush unless you need to.

You guys were right. My anxiety got the best of me.

I got into Tulane today, which is an amazing school and I’d be thrilled to go there.

If the acceptance from Tulane comes with sufficient need or merit aid to make it affordable, or you can afford its full list price, then your safety situation is solved.

This also means that you need not apply to any school you would not under any circumstances choose over Tulane.

Congratulations treehugga!

Congrats on Tulane! This is a great baseline admit, assuming the money works for your family.

S2 applied to Rochester RD, got $10k/yr merit, but it was the worst FA package we received of any school to which he was accepted. I worked with another student who had real financial need and the FA package was half of what other schools offered. I know others have been happy with their merit/FA, but in our experience, it was a disappointment after really liking the school.

well im not applying for financial aid, and i think tulane would make it be the cheapest school on my list

Congrats, treehugga.

Congrats on Tulane! If still feeling “insecure” take a look at Syracuse University!
