TD, I’d have to disagree and recommend Atlanta over any of the midwest airports. You don’t really make your way west, but the weather is more likely to cooperate. It’s a crapshoot, obviously, but I’ve had instances where I’ve been home for a full week before some of my friends, who connected through the midwest, even managed to get home.

If the weather is super bad (like it was last year, where a majority of flights were canceled), Smith will be nice and extend the house closing date so that people have a place to sleep. I think they also sent some SGA shuttles back to the airport to pick up the stranded.

I wouldn’t ship boxes before early/mid-August. Your D’s would-be box is probably being used for a School of Social Work student right now, and it won’t be transferred over until the end of the program. When you do send boxes, just put “hold for arrival” on it, and the mail ladies will do just that.

Whew. I gotta stop hanging around here. I am homesick for Smiff like whoa. :)

borgin – Thank you for that correction. Yet another sign of the economic times.

SGR, Atlanta wasn’t usually an option for D’s flights. NB, she flew either United or American, concentrating her frequent flier miles.

Your mileage may vary…literally!!! :)

TD, how quickly things change. Delta now has a direct flight from BDL to LAX.

SGR, I believe that Delta flight was eliminated last year. I just checked the Delta website and it doesn’t show as being available. Also, there was only one round-trip per day and flying to BDL from LAX involved a red-eye leaving LAX around midnight…pass.

Haha, I love red-eye flights. If I could have it my way, I would leave the night before, fly around, be miserable, and arrive the next day just as the houses opened. I really dislike coming in later in the day, since it means I have less time to adjust.

Thanks! So do you think a lot of people will choose the 30th?

Momwaiting, thanks for the warning about Target and Walmart!

we are going back and forth re the 30th - if we do go she won’t stay over I think so she’s not sure she wants to go twice although I think it would make the first official day a lot easier since it is more work to set up the dorm room than I think she realizes and if she is in a single (which she may be according to all the crazy dorm hacking stuff) she would be on her own setting up once we leave

SubwayMom, I called Smith last week to understand why there are two days for check-in. She said that 8/30 was for students coming a long distance and 8/31 was for more local students (we live in Mass.).

Nobody will care if you come on the 30th.

Levodopa, thank you. I didn’t figure we’d be in hot water if we came on 8/30, but I just wanted to understand if there was a particular flow to how they’ve set it up.

Thanks for the clarification…We’re still undecided about the 30th.

Hi all - now that they have rooms any tips on decorating/ furnishing? My D is in a single in Scales - can you fit a comfy chair in the room? Also how bad are the mattresses in general is it worth getting a mattress pad/cushion? Also any tips on closet size? She is thinking of brining a free standing clothes rack as well but doesn’t want the room too cluttered. Do most peopledecorate as they go along or bring most of it to start?
Thanks all

I would guess that your D’s room is on the smaller size, so I would wait to see if you want to have that chair in there. My friend in Scales has one, but she’s okay with it being a little tight. Same goes for closets, since most are big enough…if you need a free standing clothes rack, you should probably bring some stuff (read: a few boxes) home. Granted, you might get a closet with pipes that cut into your storage space, but once again, that’s a wait and see thing.

Any call on curtains - very silly question but would you want regular or floor length in Scales? We’ll hold of on the extra’s till we see the room - and yes she will definitely have to leave some clothes home! Thanks Smithiegr!

I think regular ones would work, but I don’t remember if the rooms on one side (the side that faces “the beach”) have bigger windows than rooms on the other side.

She is on the side facing in so we’ll go long - there are always scissors of they are too long.

Ooh…those are the best rooms (IMO). Hardwood floors instead of linoleum (I think?).

That sounds great - We’ll get a rug anyway but hardwood definitely beats linoleum which I had in my freshman dorm.
