HarrietMW, that made me laugh! In fact, we are all headed out to a friend's lake house for the evening! Ok, just 14 hours LOL .... we'll check in tomorrow!

252525 -- Hope you enjoy the U. of Richmond. We did -- twice!

I'm confused, we called College Board yesterday to get AP scores and the recording said they wouldn't be available by phone until 7/1. Is there a secret I don't know about!?

JustaMom, there have been years when they've had the scores available by phone sooner than the promised July 1 date. No way to tell for sure whether it will happen this year or not!

Oh, I see, I interpreted HistoryMom's post (314) as a statement, not a question...looks like I got all worked up (and D all worked up) for nothing!

SAT II scores are out (guess everyone likely knew that...). Son is away but I peeked at his scores (likely should not have!!).

Anyone have a sense of the 'very competitive range'? I understand it's narrower than the SAT I? Maybe 750-800? Just curious....

We finished our college touring last week with Macalester, Grinnell and Carleton. The Grinnell student tourguide was the most knowledgeable of any of the dozen schools we've visited. On top of that, he wrote d a postcard saying how much he enjoyed meeting her and giving his email if we had any further questions. She was impressed! But the train tracks through campus just didn't sit well and the town of Grinnell was not great. She decided that Carleton is first choice and she'll apply ED. Swat and Grinnell are tied for 2nd and she'll also apply to Amherst, Wheaton (MA), and Mac if she doesn't get in to Carleton.

bingle, sounds like a wonderful list. PM me if you or D have specific Swat questions; my D is a very happy rising junior there.

Jolynne, kind of depends on the school. You can go play with the Academic Index Calculator if you feel like it (using the SAT writing score for the first subject test), but if you were to ask, hundreds of parents could tell you stories of kids who've gotten into the most competitive schools with subject test scores below 750 - and :::gasp::: below 700, too. Generally speaking, the subject test scores are a smaller piece of the overall picture than the ACT or SAT i.

Bingle, did she think she got a good feel for the schools even though classes weren't in session?

I'm debating whether Fang Jr and I should go visit Kalamazoo this summer, or wait until the fall. His school doesn't start until the end of September, so we're already planning an early September trip to Maine to see Bates and Bowdoin while they are in session and Fang's school is not.

Bingle, I'm delighted to hear your daughter is very interested in Carleton. PM me if you have any questions. My daughter is having a great experience there and I LOVE to visit on Family Weekend - there's some kind of magic there.

cardinalfang: one way to look at summer visits is that they give your child an idea of which schools they would like to apply to even if their aren't students around. After acceptances come in if you feel the need to visit a second time your student will have time; especially if they take EA and rolling admissions options. It all depends on your family's schedule of course but summer visits can be productive.

To tell the truth, though we cc parents hope our kids will be the exception ;), a whole lot of kids on tours don't spend a lot of time studying/connecting with the current students on their visits anyway so if you feel the best time to schedule visits is in the summer go for it! :)

I figure that anything over 700 on the SAT2s looks good enough.

Thanks for the thoughts on the SAT IIs. Son is above 700 in US History, but got just 700 in Math I (!). He says he'll retake it.

So interesting to hear about the various colleges and everyone's positive experiences!

Jolynne - thanks for asking questions about the SAT IIs. Similar situation here - D scored 720 on Math I (this after a last minute switch from Math II when she realized that her HS's pre-calc curriculum didn't cover a significant portion of the Math II material). She was disappointed with her score and will probably retake it.

bingle - glad to hear your D had such a good experience at Grinnell, even if it ended up 2nd on her list. Feel free to PM me if you have any Grinnell questions - my own D took it off her list after one visit, even though H and I both went there :(

Fang Jr didn't spend a lot of time connecting with current students at the colleges he visited, but he loved going to the classes. On the other hand, since he enjoyed every class he went to, that didn't serve as a way to eliminate colleges.

I asked him which schools had students who seemed more engaged in class. He said Beloit's and Macalester's students were more engaged, and Carleton's and Grinnell's less engaged. I would have expected the opposite.

For what it is worth, the hs gc (selective private school and the gc seems good) told me and my daughter that any SAT II score above a 650 is fine. SAT IIs are not looked at the same way the SAT is.

D's scores:

Bio E - 710
M I - 750
Lit - 750

D would have LIKED higher (perfect :)) scores, but will not retake. Time to concentrate on something else.

ACT's are up-anyone remember where to find the ACT=SAT information?

Substitute "son" for "daughter" and the same is true here.

Right - they just aren't as big a factor.

Thanks-just what I was looking for...

Just launched my daughter on the airport shuttle to a month of study/service in Central America, and I am dithering around on CC to assuage my separation twinges until I know her flight has left the ground. She decided to leave her phone at home (encouraged by the program and I am trust-full of her overall safety throughout on this)--but I was surprised at the lurch I felt about her willingness in setting off and leaving the electronic umbilical behind. I am envoking the images of parents whose kids "went West" or set off into WWII and everyone managed just fine. But I think I know that this kind of trip will change her and all of this process we are in is about letting them go to discover THEIR independent world....I guess these are the adolescent to adult phase "labor pains"...and I am hoping that the transition we are all entering into now will go along as well as her birth did....where DID the time go?
