Parents of the high school class of 09

^^^ That echoes a lot of what I heard from D the other night: she doesn't like having to write so much about herself; she knows what she cares about but it's hard to get it on paper; why can't they just come talk to her?

We're also taking a break now that EA apps are done. I think I might even be happier about that than she is. But we all need the break too!

I love Mr. Rogers. I think he is seated at the right hand of God.

yep, I told S that he was "done" for a few weeks as the next ones are not due until Jan.--I woke up this a.m. and my first thought was "the thank you's" for his GC and Teachers...just seems like one more thing each day. Also, U of O wrote a letter saying he can submit his app for housing even though his app has not been processed....
I am sure I will dream some "one more thing" tonight for him!

Oh-and yes! sure miss Mr. Rogers. He was a voice of calm in my life when the kids were little. I still find it hard to believe that todays children will not know him. Then I wonder if they would even watch his show...

Back to the subject of procrastination, there were two schools on Son's list that recommend parent rec letters. I still haven't done them, and Son has already been admitted to one of them! I guess I should write the other one, since it's for Son's favorite school. There is actually a form to fill out with two questions: Outstanding personality traits, and areas (social and academic) where the child needs growth and strengthening. Don't know how much to disclose with that one - Son has Asperger's, so the list of areas where he needs growth could be long.

Mar2009--has your son considered the ACT? My son did better on this than the SAT. Also--would you consider a private tutor for test prep? From what I've heard, the big classes are not that helpful.

If your son is interested in computer science, you can do an advanced search on that term in the parents forum & find lots of good schools mentioned.

PJR--that is just so cool that you lived next door to Mr. McFeely & used to see Mr. Rogers! He was so calming and great. Gene London was a local, Philly guy when I was a kiddie (& Mr. Noah). :-)

any SF Bay Area residents remember Charlie and Humphrey?

cpeltz: I remember that show. I used to watch it at the neighbors. They had cable, we didn't.

I'm sure we didn't have cable when Chucko was on - I doubt it had been invented in 1961!

I remember growing up, hearing about "pay TV" (i.e. cable). I totally imagined having a little box on the TV where you put in money before you watched a show.

We hit "submit" on a few apps tonight. I gotta say we are going broke doing this. I only wish there were more free on line apps or something. Son actually narrowed down list again because of all the fees between SAT, ACt scores and app fees. Hopefully it will all be worth it in the end.

D had some free time in a class today so did some essay writing. Yippee!

She also received the first official acceptance envelope. I thought she wouldn't be that excited since she knew from the admissions website she was accepted. She surprises me. She was thrilled! She said, "Mom, it's just good to see it on paper and get all the other stuff!" The merit scholarship was confirmed and included an invitation to the Honor's Program. DH was VERY excited about the scholarship which will about cover tuition. She looked through the housing information for about an hour.

She also helped a classmate go online to see the classmate's acceptance. That was pretty exciting for D.

This is her financial safety school. The biggest downside is that we now live about 25 minutes from campus. She's gone back and forth on this issue. Today it doesn't bother her, and she kind of likes the idea of being away, but close enough. I'm sure she'll change her mind a few more times though.

Tonight she should be reviewing for the SAT, but some goofy Jr. decided to challenge her for her orchestra chair this week. She's practicing that instead. She suspects this girl will want to challenge her every chance she has this year. Silly girl. She doesn't know my D loves to "race."

In regards to childhood shows--anyone from the Chicago area? I always wanted to go to the Bozo show as a child and be the lucky one that was chosen to play the Bozo buckets. Garfield Goose and friends--a morning ritual as a child.

Scrappinmom...of course check with the admissions offices of the schools your S is applying to but so far none of the schools on either of my Ds lists has objected to the test scores being reported only on the official transcript from the high school. It could save you some bucks.

Since our son is taking an SAT Prep Class now, we decided to have him register for the SAT exam test of January 2009 (instead of December). Once he sends in his college applications, he will make sure to let these colleges know that he is taking the SAT again in January. Now, I am still a bit confused. We are not interested in applying for Early Decision which is binding. Now there is Early Action and Rolling? What the heck is "rollling"? Also, what is the latest he can apply online for some of these colleges? Although he has three colleges, so far, in mind, we are thinking of waiting til after January to apply. Anyone from New York going through this now or have answers? Thank you!

S decided on only applying to two schools. WSU, and U of I. We toured WSU this past Friday. He really is convinced that this is the school for him. Walked 8 miles on the tour. We actually ditched the tour after lunch and toured with a couple of his friends that attend there. It was nice. Both his applications are sent in and all the other materials as well. WSU says they will start notifying students NOV 1. Wouldn't it be nice to know already!

Welcome Mar2009--

Rolling admissions means that the colleges don't wait until a particular date to send out acceptances, but instead the college sends out acceptances throughout the year. ie--DD applied to a rolling admissions school in Sept and received her acceptance already.

If your son already knows he wants to apply to those 3 colleges I would encourage you to encourage him to get the applications in. Most applications that have Early Decision and/or Early Action also have a spot to check off for Regular Decision. Often merit scholarships, especially those that use the application for decisions, have an earlier deadline. Honors programs at many colleges also have an earlier deadline.

When does his class end? If it's over soon, I would strongly recommend he take the Dec. SAT so the review and prep is fresh.

You'll have to look at the college websites to find the exact deadline for each college.

rrah -- Yep, Garfield Goose, Macintosh Mouse; Beauregard Burnside III, and no doubt some other creatures. But the winner was the cartoon Clutch Cargo. I wish our kids could see it just to see what passed for "animation" at the time. But I doubt they'd believe we actually watched the stuff ....

(Remember Family Classics?)

Z--Oh gosh....Clutch Cargo that's one I didn't recall : Family Classics was a Sunday tradition at my grandparents house. My father still loves to talk about Ray Raynor. Every Thanksgiving Ray would attempt to carve a turkey and made a terrible mess of it. Every Thanksgiving my father brings it up.

I ran across the holiday classic (it always seemed to play on Garfield Goose) , "Suzy Snowflake" one year and made my children watch. Even though they were still young they rolled their eyes. Fun to remember that time.

Husband was raised in the Chicago suburbs and speaks fondly of Bozo and the gang. And if you really want to show your kids what passed for animation, you can buy a DVD of the cartoons...husband got one on eBay. What's the one where there are real mouths on the animated characters? Creepy!

Last night I realized that Son left an *entire EC *off his apps. He didn't think of it and neither did I (with all apps sent weeks ago!) He took dance- tap and jazz- for 8 years. Not a huge deal, but being a *tap dancing *Eagle Scout would make him a bit more interesting.

missypie--that is an interesting combo! (tap dancing Eagle scout!)

We almost forgot one of son's ECs (unusual sport) even though he'd done it for 4 years--because he wasn't doing it now. It happens!

My brother and sister were both on local Romper Room (Richmond)*, but I came along too late. At least I had Captain Kangaroo to watch. I still can't pull a piece of tape off of a desktop dispenser without flashing back to the Captain's art projects.

S1 not only left an EC (a fairly major one) off his first version of the common app, he also listed the wrong year for a couple of others, and made one additional, fairly significant error. And I don't mean a first draft, I mean the first one he sent off. He followed up to that school with an email correcting the two significant things, and fixed it all in subsequent versions. It'll be interesting to see if he gets into that first school or not.

Did I say interesting? I think I meant queasily fascinating.

Also, missypie, tap-dancing Eagle Scout for the win (as S1 would say). That's pretty excellent.

*Do I mean Ding-Dong School? Before my time, either way.
