Parents of the high school class of 09

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Today's question - have anyone's sons or daughters had to make any "thanks, but no thanks" calls to schools and/or coaches yet? D is really dreading this, and would probably rather get a root canal than go through that process, but it has to be done. She has to tell one coach that she is not even applying to the school....

I think calls are the right way to go since these people have spent a lot of their spare time making the calls to her, but if anyone has done this via letter (I would refuse to allow her to do this via e-mail) let me know whether that worked too....THANKS!

NYmom2sons, I guess based on what my D's heard (your list is the same as most of her classmates!), some Penn state answers have gone out, some Michigan, some Tulane, some Indiana. No SUNY Albany or Binghamton yet and I believe in past years it has been mid-December for apps filed before 11/15. I think Maryland might be later for EA, like January?

Rachacha...we have done the dreaded "no thanks" calls to coaches. It was very hard for D1 and D2. A personal call is the right way to go. Even after D2 verbally committed she was getting emails from other new coaches who she had no previous contact with. A quick email thanking them for their interest and then letting them know she was already committed was sent. EVERY coach responded with a thanks for letting them know and a wish for her success in the future. Common courtesy on both ends has made this a very easy process. Good luck!

CSU application fee 55.00 X 4

UC Application fee 68.00 X 3

Trinity U Application Fee 0.00 x 2 (thank you thank you thank you!!!)

Heading into Thanksgiving weekend with no due dates hanging over your head...priceless :D

I hear you, Historymom, but I don't think we'll be in that position, sigh. GOOD FOR YOUR GIRLS!!! S2 has 3 essays (easy ones once he, you know, like gets off his internet chat and WRITES them) that I don't think he'll get done until Friday or Saturday for his two Dec. 1 deadline schools. I spent 2 hours this morning formatting labels and forms to go with his two pre-audition screening tapes. (For those of you unfamiliar with music, some music schools require students to submit a pre-audition screening CD to determine whether they will accept you for a live audition. To make it even more fun, each school has specific requirements and/or songs that they want you to perform, so there's not a "standard" CD you can send to every school) One school even had a specific format for the return address label, for $%^@ sake!!! No one will notice if my house isn't perfect tomorrow right? But that darn label was!!! And, hmmm....., here I am on CC!!!

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! next year, we'll be discussing how anxious we are to lay eyes on our freshman kiddos!!! Enjoy every minute tomorrow!!!

That's true, SJTH! The last Thankgiving with our highschoolers before they go off (and, hopefully, at times, come back).

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Turkey Day everyone! I'm wondering if mine will be coming home for Thanksgiving next year, given that she is hoping to go to school on the East Coast next year and it is so far away. I hope she does.

We got back from her first auditions in Boston at Emerson. COLD! She will have to get used to what it is like back there. I was complaining. She said it was "refreshing." Ha ha.

EA is by Dec. 15. 400-500 audition. 50 get in. Ugh.

chrissyblu--we're just the reverse--mine wants to go to CA, so far away! Then we found out this week that only 2 kids were admitted EA to Stanford from his HS--reality check! (he knew it was a real reach, but this reinforces it) The other CA school he's interested in is Berkeley which only admitted 1 from his HS last year. So maybe he won't be so far away after all!

My S has heard back from Wisconsin and Indiana already. He submitted apps in October.

HistoryMom, congrats that your girls are done! We're only days away here knowing DS wil wait until the last possible moment.

Since I'm pushing the whole process so hard, he's pretty disinterested. I just hope once he actually gets to a college he'll jump in with two feet. At this point, it seems like a stretch!

Haven't been on this thread for a l-o-n-g time -- just lurking on the fringes! S has submittted 2 applications -- 1 is rolling, but not among his top choices; the other is EA to his first choice. We'll hear by 12/15. If he gets in and wants to be done, fine; if he then wants to submit a couple more apps, that's fine too. At that point I'll be too busy celebrating to worry about it! Any other schools are Common App, so even if he does submit more, the majority of the work is done. So, H & I will be on pins & needles until the magic date; S appears unconcerned with the whole thing.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

I too have enjoyed the camaraderie on this thread ... the stress-free zone for this second labor and delivery!

Congratulations to all the acceptances and finished apps! I wish I (we!) were in that boat, but I (we!) will have to wait a bit for that.

On Saturday, I told my Dear Son that I really enjoyed not fighting/stressing with him, so I'd come to a decision. I was done with all my responsibilities towards the app process - all the fees were paid, forms filled out and fires lit under butt to get the Common App done. With three more RD supplements to finish, I told him it was all up to him now. No schedule, no nagging, no questions. I told him I wanted to enjoy his last year here and not spend it fighting. The smile I got in return was priceless.

I wouldn't change the way I went about the process though. The pushing, fretting, cajoling, nagging, and stress paid off in getting him into a favorable position now when other kids are just starting to construct their lists. I know he sees that and is grateful too. But that part is over. And now I (we!!) wait.

Hug your kids and have a wonderful holiday you great Parents of '09 :)

CBBBlinker--I bet he's more concerned than he lets on. Sounds like we're in the same boat--EA due 12/15, rolling due any time now. Mine still has a bunch of regular ones to do over this next month including one this weekend.

SueD--I'd love to make that same promise to my DS, but know I can't step away entirely so won't say I will. However, I do keep my prodding to a very minimum knowing he does come thru eventually on his own timetable and in his own way.

Let's all say a little prayer that our kiddies will be back home this time next year and we'll be comparing notes about how great/different it is it to have them home!

Mom in VA,

Well, at least your son has a little hope since two kids got in EA last year to Stanford. My son applied SCEA to Yale. No student at our school has ever gotten into Yale. No student in the past 20 years has gotten into an Ivy. Thank goodness he has other choices.

momreads--wow. Good for him for applying anyway--I'll keep my fingers crossed.

SueD, remember it's a second labor. You push, but remember how important that controlled breathing is. Good luck with that last big push. Then someone else will take it from there for the next stage (and you can have a drink!). :-)

Wahoo, S2 wrote the remaining three essays for the Dec. 1 applications and they are complete and sent! Now he gets a 2 week reprieve until he hears from his ED school. His essays, which he wrote on the fly, were actually very good and, except for a chronic case of using "which" instead of "that" needed very little editing. Hmmm..if it was THAT easy, why did we wait until the last minute??? Anyway, much relief here!

Thanksgiving was very nice, and the whole fam has pretty much recharged this weekend, which we all needed. Hope you all have had a similarly relaxing long weekend. It all begins anew tomorrow!!!

SJTH, I share your joy! Last night we hit submit on his UC applications and 3 common app schools. There are just two left with RD in January, and I've resolved to not mention the word "application" for at least a week. His essays were good, but needed some editing - he took a couple of suggestions, but rejected most. I'm finding it difficult to ungrit my teeth, but they are his applications (as my H so frequently reminds me), and I had to remind myself that most kids don't have CC parents raising the bar, so he should be fine and he has a couple of CalState schools as safeties.

What a relief, and the progress is definitely one of the things I'm most thankful for this long weekend. Well, that and the fact that we'll be putting up Christmas lights in 80 degree weather.

historymom - "UC Application fee 68.00 X 3"

Why 68? I thought I paid only 60 x 3.

we, too had a wonderful thanksgiving break. D got every one of her apps off (4 on common app plus one more). Now we wait. No ED here, but three EAs, so news will come within a month to take some pressure off! She is happy to have it all done and now can dig in the studies, and then enjoy Christmas vacation. Won't we all! I have been a complete pest. I admit it!
