Parents of the HS Class of 2004

I believe TheDad is active on the Smith College boards. And, what about Achat?

missing Twinkle and Sunshine

Shellfell -- Ok, tell me your secret. You've got a kid graduating college, your join date is Aug 2004, and you've got a total of one thread and 39 posts. How did you avoid becoming as addicted as the rest of us?

Sac-- No secret. I've actually been reading posts pretty regularly (DH would say I'm addicted), but in between S1 and S2 usually only on the Swat board, and only posting when I had something to add to the discussion. When S1 told me his girlfriend saw something I posted, I figured I needed to be careful with my posts.
CC has certainly helped me get through the college process twice.

I am ReidMc's wife. Reid became a poster and I became a lurker in 2003, because we were helping our nephew navigate the college admission process during the 2003-2004. Reid and I are both curious as to what happened to the High School Class of 2004 and what they are going to do upon graduation -

I will start out
Our nephew is graduating from Kenyon and will be joining the Army as an officer candidate in June.

S3 is not graduating. He has detoured through a couple of years working restaurants and retail while discovering why he wants to be in college. He plans to return next year. He could not go back until he was ready to state that he would go to classes and do the work. His first time through he got too distracted by friends, fraternity, games, sports, anything but classes and homework.

My son is graduating from the University of Maryland at College Park and will be starting a Ph.D. program in computer science at the University of California at San Diego.

We're from Maryland, and I'm having trouble getting used to the idea of him being so far away, but it's a good graduate program, and he loves California. It's time to let go.

I graduated from Rice in January, am working this semester, and will be off to Baylor College of Medicine in the fall.

Our daughter just graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and heading to UCLA this fall to pursue her Ph.D.

Member of the old boards (Rowan) -- been hanging around CC since at least my junior year. :)

After starting at UCSC and detouring to a CC near home for a short period of time, finally settled in at UC Berkeley. Had the option to stay a 5th year and do research with one of my favorite professors, so here I be! Looking to go into PhD programs in medieval literature after I finally graduate.

I graduated yesterday (Sunday) from William and Mary with a BA in International Relations and a minor in Music.

I am backpacking in Europe for a month from the end of May to the end of June, and pursuing Americorps positions for a year before long term employment.

I just love seeing what you parents of 2008 college seniors say. Those of us with 2009 hopefuls are watching and waiting and hoping to learn...

This is third thread on this topic. The second is:
Any Parents of College Seniors? (nngmm) already said this)

First is Official College Class of 2008 Graduation plans!

I posted on the first thread, so don't wish to be redundant. I very much enjoy hearing the paths these graduating (or almost) students are taking. My S is headed for consulting job in Boston

Possibly, the moderators could merge these?

Reidmc and I joined CC in 2003 - Reid as a poster and I as a lurker.

Our nephew will be graduating cum laude on Saturday from Kenyon with a major in Political Sciience. He has done very well - became captain of the Rugby team, did a study abroad program, went to a seminar at West Point and was a nanny to his two younger cousin each summer while he was in college.

Going to a small liberal arts college was a good decision for our nephew - I know that he took classes and developed interests, such as Baroque Art, that he may not have at a larger universities.

At the middle of June, he will be going to basic training and then attending officers candidate school in the Army. I have very serious reservations about this, but it is his life.

It is wonderful to hear how everyone has been doing.

I did not know about the other threads and agree that it would be a good idea to merge them

S graduated from Duke on Sunday. It was a fun and exciting weekend even with the rain! He had an amazing four years and made some wonderful friends. We were surprised to see how he has grown in four years and happy to see how mature he has become.

S will be taking another journey that will give us lots more grey hair. He will be commissioned as an officer in the army on July 4 after spending time in Seattle at a leadership training course, and then he'll head off to officer training. We too, have reservations, but like brigid said, it is indeed his life and he plans to experience it to the fullest. He wants to serve and then go to graduate school.

This is a totally unexpected path, but he is excited and proud....
H& I are scared to death!

brigid, maybe our S and your nephew will cross paths. Good luck!

I hope we can find comfort with some more virtual friends and advisors for the next four years.
And we thought college was tough..:(

1sokkermom - I too would be proud and scared at once. You have the collective support of this group I am sure and I hope you find real and or virtual group of other parents watching their sons and daughters take this path.

Thank you ohmadre!

thank you for your kind thoughts, Isokkermom. We should stay in touch.

Well, personally I enjoyed this thread more. The others talk about graduating and post-graduation plans, while my path happens to have me staying an extra year... but I was certainly here with the other HS Class of 2004 grads and I'm certainly in the minority.

Do like hearing what people are up to, though.
