Parents of the HS Class of 2007

This is a fun thread! S will graduate from Stanford in June. He entered college single-mindedly focused on math/science, and settled early into physics. He’s doing well, did several summer research projects, is working now on an honors project, and will be applying in the next couple of months to Ph.D. programs in physics. D had quite a different experience–graduated from Stanford in 2008 as an English major with no clue about what to do. She spent a year doing an internship, decided in spring 2009 to pursue a degree in TESOL and quickly applied to an MA program for 2009-2010. This past June, she began a two-year stint in the Peace Corps teaching English in China! She’s having an amazing and wonderful experience so far.

D1 is also a senior at Smith majoring in art (arch). She has loved her coursework (especially landscaping classes), but has no interest in arch as a career. Rather, she hopes to join the Peace Corp and ultimately, teach (elem or middle sch math).

D1 was waitlisted at Cornell and later got off, so she never got the chance of being listed here and celebrate with everyone when the decision came out for everyone. The college process was a real bitter sweet for her.

D1 started with 2 majors, math and economics, she will graduate with those majors and a minor in gender studies. Her college experience has exceeded her expectation. She has a job waiting for her when she graduates. She said it’s the ED she didn’t get for college.

I am happy it turned out well for D1, and now we are gearing up for D2.

My D transferred from Furman to Vanderbilt sophomore year. She will graduate in May with a degree in Medicine, Health, and Society. She entertained the idea of law school, but a summer living with law students/recent law grads helped her to realize that it’s not something she wants to do. She has been interning in the music industry, and she hopes to be able to get a job in the industry when she graduates. Her internships have been unpaid, but she has done a lot of great work that makes for an excellent resume. She holds two leadership positions on campus (one with the school’s music board & one with a volunteer group), and she has a radio show. She loves Nashville and Vandy.

D turned Vandy down initially, but when she decided to transfer it was for all the right reasons. She is not a “typical Vandy student,” but she has found a place for herself.

She is very worried about her future, because she has no intention of “coming home.” She is trying to plan for all possibilities, in case she can’t get a job in the music industry. The years between college search and today have brought an amazing amount of maturity … we are sure that she will find her way in the world just fine.

Oh, and if you are connected in the music business … pm me! ;)

Just a note on the Northeastern students. It is a usually a five year program so the 07s will graduate in 12. My son was an 06 scheduled to finish in 11 but he elected to only do two coops and graduated in 10.

Mathson is finishing up his senior year at Carnegie Mellon still majoring in Computer Science. He’s also minoring in Physics. (He’s required to have a minor.) He interned at Google last summer and they offered him a job. We’re very happy that he’s set up, but of course Mountain View is very far from where we are!

We have no complaints about CMU, he clearly made the right decision for himself.

DD1 is finishing up at Denison majoring in English with a minor in Studio Arts with the intent to be a book editor for Manga (it’s nice to have a goal, eh?). Interned with an author this summer and I hope it gives some entrees’. Denison is a very good, challenging school. DD just chafed at some of the admin issues (class selection).

D. will graduate in May. Applying to Med. Schools. Being in combined program, she has one spot. In few weeks we will see if she has choices.

Bumping this up until we find some more of the HS '07ers! :)

D1 transferred from UMichigan to Yale as a sophomore. Majoring in English (creative writing track) and taking premed coursework. Will take at least one year off before applying to Med school. I am observing and taking notes as MiamiDap’s D and several others go through the process this year, much more daunting than UG admissions!

D1 preparing to take her GRE in Oct. I’m very proud of her effort . She has maintained Chancellors List all 3 yrs. She interned this past summer with a local congressman. She is still uncertain whether she wants to take off a year. Her Sorority has offered her a job as a rep. D1’s decision will depend upon what grad school offers she receives. Lest I forget to mention her boyfriend a biochem major is also preparing to apply to Grad school. With trepidation, I believe her decision will be influenced by his choice. I hope she considers her offers wisely. I’m overjoyed that she still seeks out my advice. This is truly an exciting time!

CCer for 2007 son and it was such a great source of information. 2011 college grad.

Son is graduating University of Miami in the spring. (Could have graduated 2 1/2 years but no need to rush. Picked up a second major instead.) Double major in English and history with a minor in philosophy.

Took the LSAT’s junior year and is in the process of applying to law school.

Congrats to all our children and let’s hope the economy picks up and our kids can get jobs and afford housing!

If not, the upstairs bedroom awaits…

My D was talking to a prof about the future, and she told him she would feel like a failure if she had to come home. While I did tell her that she is welcome to stay here if necessary, I am glad that she is committed to making sure that doesn’t happen. ;)

kelsmom,

Where we are there really is nothing for young people within 45 miles, so they don’t usually come back. Neither of mine ever had the idea of returning.

S graduating from Williams with no idea of what comes next. Is diligently working on what’s in front of him now.

Has applied to The Peacecorps, Americorps and TeachAmerica, and we’ll see.

We somehow didn’t end up on the list either. My daughter is a senior at Brown. I won’t say what she’s majoring in, because there’s a chance she could be identified if I do. She’s enjoyed her time there, although interestingly she recently told someone that she now realizes that she would have been happy at other schools (a healthy attitude that all high school seniors should have). She’s made some good friends, although hasn’t found an extracurricular niche, which I think troubles her a bit. She’s had two excellent summer internships.

Many of her friends are going to grad school, and she knows that is not a good path for her immediately. But she is a little lost trying to figure out how to find a job – she is most interested in nonprofits, who don’t recruit like investment banks and computer companies. She most definitely doesn’t want to come home.

mythmom, Americorps would be a very good fit for my daughter. Is that something that you apply for now, if you aren’t planning on working until after graduation? When I look on the website, I see job openings for the immediate future, not 9 months from now.

fireandrain: You know? I may have overgeneralized. I know S applied for the Peace Corps already, and for the Peace Corps there is a full year lead time. I’m not positive about the other two.

They are all quite competitive these days, sad to say.

If things don’t work out, my guess is that S will get a little apartment and hang around Williamstown. He has worked at the library on campus and at the Clark Art Museum. He is a Classics major, so he usually knows things others don’t, and can be valuable. Maybe someone will put him on full-time. He really likes the way of life there. He is a laid back dude.

I’d ask S about whether or not he’s applied to Americorps or TeachAmerica, but I am not allowed to say the words, “next year.”

My D volunteered at non-profits for her gap year: Georgia Capital Defenders and Human Rights First in NY while working as a nanny. She spent most of her year in Atlanta and some of it in NYC. She’s in law school now.

mythmom, so glad to hear I’m not alone. Just yesterday my soon to be May grad after telling me he was leading the curve in one of his classes (yeah) said “mom we’re not going to talk about next year until next year.” to which I said, “when is your lease up?” to which he said “maaaaaahm are you not listening to me.” OK, touchy, touchy.

Great idea for this thread! I didn’t make the original list either but my son is a senior at Dartmouth majoring in biomedical engineering. He will get his BS this year but then will stay for a 5th year to get a BE. (No, I do not understand why this is necessary and, yes, it is a shock to our bank account.) He is talking about working for a year or so after graduation and then going to grad school but he hasn’t been specific about what he wants to do and I have no idea what the job market will be like in his field. Meanwhile, he loves Dartmouth. His passion is rowing and I am happy to report that he is captain of the lightweight crew team this year.
