Parents of the HS Class of 2007

It seems like yesterday we were sharing where our sons and daughters matriculated. I thought it might be fun to see what degrees they are earning, and if they are graduating from the same college they originally matriculated in 2007. Pull out a cup of coffee/tea or a glass of wine, or cocktail, and share once again.

Now-in 2011:

APOL's D-Northwestern-Theater, Political Science, and minor in Environmental Policy

Fun. I must not have posted the results back then, but S1 is still at the same college, graduating this spring with a business major and english minor or a double major still TBD. Taking the LSATs soon and who knows where he’ll be next fall. Hopefully not “home.”

S is also at his same college, same major (Econ) but added a minor (International Gov/Law). On track to graduate with honors. Doesn’t know exactly what type of job he wants, but has begun looking. Wisely (IMHO) says he’s not interested in grad school at this point, since he’s not sure what he wants to do he would be paying a lot of money for something he might not end up liking/using.

Unlike momof3boys, I am hoping that next fall S WILL be home - but working at a job he enjoys. He could live with us for a while to save some money. But if he finds a job he thinks he’ll like and it’s not near us, that would be ok too. (sniff, sniff).

Thanks for starting this thread. I never posted D’s school. She is a double major and also a double minor. APs helped a lot, and she is also a glutton for punishment.

She spent last year abroad, first in the UK, then Spain, followed by an internship in Spain. She informed us in February that she will be living over there upon graduation. Already has a job offer, but doesn’t need to let them know until May. Also considering grad school there for a particular specialized program that leads to work in the EU.

APOL, she was accepted to NU, but the coach of her EC frowned on SA.

Don’t get me wrong, I miss my S but this is not a good “place” for him, the weather depresses him and the job market is horrendous. If by some miracle he gets a job here I’d love to see him, but I remember what he’s like in November, December, January, February and March when there is a real absence of sunlight.

To make lurking easier for some of us, it would be appreciated if when responding you cite the school. I look forward to lurking!

My D is still happily at the University of Chicago. She is majoring in Sociology, and seems headed possibly towards a future in education policy, but who knows. Being my third, I’ve learned that plans on graduation day often morph in ways not possible to conceive when college is finished. She has studied abroad in Vienna, and is active on campus. With a few momentary exceptions, I don’t think there have been any regrets. Except that she’s had to go back for her 4th year, because that means graduation and the real world loom in June!

Sorry, especially since I never posted originally.

Trinity University in SA, TX.

I was not active as a poster back when my son was applying. However CC was a great source of info and was glad that I found the site.

Son1…graduated MIT in May 2011-----started in one major, graduated in another
Son2…will graduate Cornell in May 2012—started in one major, will graduate in another
Son3…will graduate Cornell in May 2012—started in one major, will graduate in another

Ok, to update with college info:

S is at Lafayette, also did Study Abroad in Spain (Barcelona) and loved it.

This is fun. My son is earning a double major in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Rice. When he entered Rice he was certain that he wanted to major in EE even though he has a lot of strength in CS. Well, sometime moms know best, as he slowly realized that he really loves CS and started double majoring. He had a great internship doing software engineering at a small financial company in NYC this summer and they offered him a job upon graduation! But he’s thinking he really wants to pursue a PhD in CS. So he’s just about to start a new round of applications, essays, etc.

And, by the way, he’s been really happy at Rice. It’s turned out to be a great fit for him.

I was not active on CC when D1 applied, either, but I am now with D2.

D1 got in ED to Tufts, and never applied anywhere else. She was undecided as to her major, but always leaned toward Science of some kind. She is finishing a double major in Biology and Environmental Studies, very happy with her whole experience. She studied abroad in South Africa junior year, in a Conservation Ecology program.

She probably will end up with a grad degree, may end up a researcher/college professor, but she wants to explore the field more before she commits. She’s nervous about the job market, but is grateful that she has a decent chance at a lab job or TA position, or perhaps some overseas internships.

She has loved Boston, but has not become a definite “transplant.” She could end up anywhere, based on her job prospects, and may even find herself back in her home area, but would definitely live in an apartment of her own. The only way she would use our house as a home base is if she does go from internship to internship, particularly in distant lands, in which case renting an apartment would be financially wasteful.

I was not active on CC when S applied, either, but I am now. D is 2 years younger.

S started at McGill with a double in Econ and East Asian and remains so. Spent some time in China. Now looking for a job. Loves Montreal but I don’t think he has figured out the residency thing enough to stay.

I just drove up to a neighboring city to watch DS’s team compete, and we had a quick lunch together. He said again how glad he is to have attended Rice, and how he is going to miss the camaraderie and community so much! He just filled out some graduation paperwork, ordered diploma, etc for the spring… and he said it really hit him how this is his last year there! He changed from Chem Eng. to Environ Eng. his junior year, and has spent the last two years, including summers, doing air quality research with a prof, and has spent a lot of time captaining his club sport team. He’s now thinking about job possibilities versus grad school. I’m not sure where he’ll end up, but I would love him to live in our city, or even with us for a short while to save money and pay off his small amount of undergrad loans. ($7000) I’m looking forward to graduation ceremonies in May, but am sad to think that I will no longer have a student at Rice. After 7 years and 2 kids, I’ve grown to really love the place! :)

I was here in 07 but must not of put S on the list. He is still attending Univ of the Pacific and he tells me he will graduate in the spring. He will be getting a BFA in Graphic Design. He doesn’t have a clue as to what the next step will be but would love to be able to find a job in our city. I doubt that will happen. I am just hoping he finds a job somewhere.
I think I know why I might not have listed son on that list is that he was set to take a GAP year Fall 07 and decided at the end of July that he no longer wanted to do a gap year and UOP was able at short notice to enroll him and get him a space in a dorm. He has enjoyed his time. Stockton might not be the nicest town but S has made some good friends and has absorbed knowledge in quite a number of different areas through his distribution requirements. He has also turned into an artist and has been able to explore different types of art through the BFA. I still have one in HS and another back in college after taking several years off.

I discovered CC too late to help my D but stayed, learnt and enjoyed.
D is a senior at Smith College, double majoring in Art History and German. Although my bank account was hoping she’d accelerate, she has chosen to stay for her fourth year in order to write an Honors Thesis. She is also working on the GRE and numerous applications to Grad school, both in the States and in the UK. Coming straight from France, she had a bumpy first year, but has done remarkably well since and has been overall very happy at Smith.

What a cool idea to start this thread!

My D is still at Brown, has loved it all 4 years. She is a double Visual Art/Literary Arts major and has no idea what she wants to do when she finishes. Probably come home for a short time to catch her breath, but she has no intention of staying here. There was never any doubt in any mind that Brown was the right place for her. Certainly there were ups and downs over the years, mostly social, but she is a wonderful, interesting, and creative young woman. I am so excited to see who she will be in the years to come.

Son is at Virginia Tech with dual major in finance/accounting. Will graduate in May and is deciding whether to do M in accounting program or enter the job market. He has had great opportunities at VT-traveled abroad, did an internship last year, has taken advantage of career fair and has some interviews lined up. We were down for our last VT football game last weekend-will really miss those games. VT was a great choice for him-so glad he went and has enjoyed his college experience.

For those who have switched majors, it would be interesting to know what they switched from/to. I don’t remember the exact numbers, but majors are frequently switched. But I’ve wondered how dramatic the switches are. For example, someone above switched from Chem Eng to Environ Eng, and another added a CS major to a EE one. Those don’t seem to be dramatic switches. But how often does someone, for example, switch majors from Chem Eng to Sociology?

I did not post here when DD accepted Rice since I had posted on the music majors forum. anxiousmom, DD agrees that this is a both a wonderful. and bittersweet year. Rice has been perfect for her and now that her senior recital and the castings for the spring are done, it really is hitting home that this is the last year. BTW - she is in the same major, Vocal Performance, graduating and planning to stay in Houston to develop voice more before applying to her next step the following year. A common occurrence for singers. She is working with the professors to get placed in the Houston singing community, audition for summer programs and also find enough work to allow her to live there on her own. .
