Parents of the HS Class of 2007

Hi all!

As I was taking a break from Seder dinner cooking (over 30 coming tonight), I stumbled upon this thread…so glad I did! It’s a lovely distraction!!!

Great to hear how well our CC D’s & S’s are doing. So impressive! Gives one hope for the future. It’s interesting to see how many of us are still around this site. It was so helpful for me with my 2 D’s, that I try to give back to others. Now I’m using it to help with post grad ideas.

D1 will graduate in May as a Philosophy major from New College of Florida. She was selected to present her thesis (required of all students to graduate from there) at a national conference and is planning to continue in philosophy for grad school after taking at least one year off. She’s all set during the year off with a Jewish service organization
doing work she’s very interested in.

She also studied abroad at Oxford, was a T.A. and had an internship one summer during college. All in all, quite happy (and proud) with how she’s done!!!

Next year, D2 will be graduating from U Michigan…a school we also love!

I am enjoying getting caught up with all the CC parents, and their children. Hearing about their child’s accomplishments is a JOY!. Our world will benefit from their hard work and creativity.

DD is finishing up where she started, at Cornell, happier than ever. Just got letter last night naming her a Fulbright Scholar for the coming school year so she will head back to the MiddleEast for a year.

congrats to her and the family, memphismom

My D is graduating this June. Back here, at home, the world changed these past 4 years. She, on the other hand, never missed a step. She changed majors, starting in Civil Engineering (which both her father and I were very skeptical of) and is graduating with a major in Psychology and a minor in film. It looks like she will be working in her chosen field, advertising. And she is extremely happy. As am I.

Haven’t strayed much outside the music forum for awhile, but was doing a forum search, and found this thread! Here’s my update. My D graduated last weekend from Miami U (Ohio) Summa Cum Laude, with a major in violin performance, and minors in German and Chinese. Next up, she’s headed to China for a year to attend a university there and perfect her Mandarin.

More importantly, after 10 years and 3 kids, we’ve made our last ever tuition payment.

Wow. I read what I posted, but so much has changed in S’s life since October. He is still graduating from Williams as a Classics major but has developed a direction, which he didn’t have. Imagine that. He has decided he wants to be a museum curator so he is coming home to get more Art History credits and learn French before he applies to Grad school.

We live 5 minutes from a state u.

He has applied to the Starbucks type jobs for this period, but a great movie buff, he is hoping for the movie theater.

He had an amazing time at Williams and a random summer job at the Clark Museum has pointed him in the direction of a career and life goal.

I just came across this thread…

We’re making plans to head up to the University of Maryland-College Park, where D1 will be graduating next week with double degrees in Astronomy and Physics. She has stated multiple times since freshman year till now that she can’t imagine having picked a better school for her undergrad work…great opportunities, internships, working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center since her sophomore year, etc. Her sister is now also a Terp (class of '13)…she also loves it, but for many very different reasons.

D1 will be heading northward this summer in preparation for starting her Ph.D. program in Astronomy (specializing in Solar Physics) at Harvard in the fall. It’s been a great ride (so far!!!) We joke that the graduation cards that say “The sky is the limit” don’t apply to her!!!

Such interesting young people! It’s nice to hear that so many of the seniors have concrete plans for the next step in their lives.

My daughter is graduating from Cornell. Economics major – which is what she intended from the start. Has a job lined up with a litigation consulting firm starting in July. This may not be as exotic as some of the plans listed above, but it suits her.

D. is not on the list. Graduated Summa (Phi Betta Kappa and numerous other awards/honors…, featured on school homepage) last week from state school, going to Med. School in less than 2 months. Thanks for all Merit awards at UG, Med. School is very expensive. As of now on her trip abroad. D. will miss her UG a lot, had great opportunities that she feels she would not have at other places.

I’m back on the boards for D2, and I gotta say, this thread is the reason it is all worth it. Way to go HS class of 2007!!!

S isn’t on the list either. He graduated from the University of Michigan last week with a triple major in actuarial math, economics and statistics. He worked very hard and was rewarded with more than one job offer. He will be moving to Boston in two weeks to start his career as an actuary for a major insurance company. He absolutely loved Michigan - he left home as a quiet teenager and returned as a very confident man. I’m so proud of him!! S2 is a freshman at George Mason in Fairfax VA. He is having a great experience there.

^^^congratulations to your son on his job! sounds like he earned it!

@ Marian - My oldest is an economist. Went from undergrad (UPenn) right to a job, so I can relate to what you wrote about your D. It was, as you say, exactly the right thing for him, and he’s been very happy with it (although he graduates Friday with a masters in public policy from Georgetown, and may change directions with his career as a result). It is amazing what different paths my three children have each taken - fortunately, they’ve not felt competition with each other or anyone else, but have felt free to pursue their own passions.

I think there is no better “end result” than for your D to find the path that is “right for her.” Congrats to her, and to all the other members of the class of '11 who are well on their way to discovering “what they’re going to be when they grow up”!

“…a random summer job at the Clark Museum has pointed him in the direction of a career and life goal.”

D2s case is similar, an internship she had at Cornell has pointed her in a particular direction. Whether she can make something of it, we will see.

My DD received a full ride at UOP this fall. She will pursue a masters in education. Her boyfriend also received a full ride at UOP. He will pursue a masters in biology. He proposed the next day after graduation. She said yes. They plan to wait until after grad school to set the date.

TerpDad, that is cool!

Update on my post #4. D graduated. She decided to decline the offer in Spain she got so long ago when she was recruited for a position in San Antonio. A one year position. Following that, she will attend the program in Spain leading to employment in the EU. At least she will be on this continent for another year.

TWin sons here

Son 1 just graduated from the Univ OF Southern California in Computer Engineering. He has a job lined up in the Bay area and choose from 3 solid offers. I have to say that Trojan Family networking thing is very real. He starts Sept 1 after we go hiking into the Yellowstone back country this summer.

Son 2 is going another year at Oregon State due requirements of a Japanese Minor to go along with his major in EE. Hopefully I have another graduation to go to next year. he has had two great internships there and while he struggled a bit a year ago he seems to be puling it back together. He wants to go live in Japan.

A good thread and fun to read

D graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt last week. She wants to follow her passion to work in the music industry and is trying to capitalize on the contacts she made through internships and classes. However, reality is sinking in & she in panicking about the lack of job opportunities. She will find her way through this (with our financial help, alas) just as she has found a way to be successful in other areas of her life. She can absolutely do this … she just has to make it happen. I finished a four-page letter to her about an hour ago stating that! :)

Update on post #42. S1 graduated with an aerospace engineering degree on May 7th (parents, both sets of grandparents and younger brother in attendance!) and he did receive a job offer from the company he interned with last summer…incredible salary with benefits and relocation costs. He’ll be working as a software engineer in his dream-city, San Francisco, starting this Monday. Last week he put a security deposit down on an apartment and today he sold his car and his bed. He’ll be back for a wedding in August, but I’m really looking forward to visiting him in his new city sometime next year.
