Youdon'tsay, I know exactly how you feel. It comes and goes in waves with me. One day I'm convinced he has a viable shot at Colgate. The next I'm telling myself he must find six safeties...and apply to them all.

This was the first wave of any kind of stress I've felt, so maybe I'm lucky. He's a wonderful kid with great grades, good scores, wonderful ECs. He'll do well. Just a little bit of irrationality snuck in.

He took the MathII, and he got a 730! We're happy with that. Well, I'm happy with that. He asked me this a.m.: Should I retake it and try to get a better score? And what ones do I take next? Not in any kid of stressed way, more like an enthusiastic way. So, he basked in a 730 for all of about 8 seconds. I'm going to try to make it last through the day, at least. :)

Youdon'tsay - congrats on the terrific Math II score! D will be taking that one in June.

DougBetsy - I'm sure all of our kids will do fine - but knowing how competitive the process is, it's hard not to let the irrationality sneak in once in awhile.

Youdon'tsay: Congratulations to your son! How nice to get the MathII out of the way in October. D is possibly going to take that one in Dec.

LIMOMOF2: Yeah, she decided to take it in May, and we are glad she did. She did well enough that she is no longer stressed about the exam, though she is going to take it one more time in March to improve her reading score.

I can relate to the "waves of stress" that come and go. I am currently riding a "wave of non-stress", having decided that she is doing great and will most likely end up getting into a really good college. Lets see how long the surf stays up.

congrats on the score reports all. Fall sport ends in a week (double yay!) and then hopefully will have some time to prep for SAT IIs in Dec. With score choice my younger one will definitely be starting earlier in the test taking business.

jackief - which SAT IIs will your D be taking in Dec.? I'm eager for the Fall sports to end as well - D's had a bad season (injured most of the time, yet still had to go to all practices and meets) and it's been pretty stressful for her - she felt like she was just wasting time which could have been put to much better use.

vicariousparent - good idea for your D to try the SAT last May. Mine had way too much going on at that point last year for us to even consider such a thing, and I'm afraid this May is going to be the same - that's why I'd like her to give it try this winter. Glad the "surf is up" for you right now - that's a great feeling!

S is having to schedule SATs around XC, track schedule. Very irritating. Taking SATII Math II in Dec- will be missing a meet, but he doesn't yet know it. He won't be able to take SATs until March due to track schedule. I wish he had more time to prepare, but between sports, homework and occasional bass practice (just rented this HUGE upright; he plays electric), no time.

D is thinking of taking Latin (only offered Dec and June) and maybe Lit. She wasn't prepared for Latin last year so signed up but didn't show for the test date. Her school doesn't teach to the test primarily weak in vocab open book tests last year, but she is getting a better prep this year because she is in an AP class. She will take two other tests in June matched to end of classes (Hist, Math2), so would like to get Latin out of the way now if possible. Lit only because we have had good results on that one in our school, so she might take it. With score choice it probably wouldn't hurt.

Dec is good for her because it doesn't conflict with winter sport but then we'll have to wait to see the race schedule for the next non-conflicting testing date for first try at SAT. Could be Jan or Mar. D's winter sport is nordic skiing.

jackief - good luck to your D if she takes those SAT IIs in Dec. So, score choice applies to the SAT IIs as well? Do you know if it will be listed that they've taken tests and chosen not to report the scores? Just curious - so far, we're ok with reporting the scores she's gotten.

Cool winter sport, btw. Your school has way more interesting teams than ours does.

well we don't have track, probably because we are too small to support it including the equipment/gym space. But we do have snow! The gym is taken up with bball and we even need to overflow to use the gym at a college nearby. From what I know, someone supposedly called up the CB in the SAT postings, and said that score choice would allow you to pick the SAT IIs by date and subject also. We'll see, our college people have no details. At this point she will probably be applying to a few schools which allow you to substitute 2 or 3 SAT IIs for SATI/ACT so it would be to her advantage to have a few to pick from and more opportunities to get decent scores.

LI isn't really made for nordic skiing, I guess............lol.

I guess we'll all have to wait to find out more details about how the new score reporting will work. I do agree about having a few extra SAT IIs to choose from - my D will be doint the same thing.

jackief: That was me who called up CB about the score choice and you are right, that is what I was told.

I just checked out how that 730 fell in the percentile chart. 74% Hmm, all of a sudden it doesn't sound go great! LOL

vicarious- thanks for the confirmation.
Youdon'tsay- don't worry about it. There are some lang tests (I think Chinese? Spanish?) where 800 doesn't even have the best %tile. I think as long as the scores are decent with some leeway to the really tough tests, then they should be all set.

For schools D is looking at, they are reported to be more holistic, so we are not loosing sleep (yet)

Just got another glossy mailing from the same small "Tech" school 3 states away that we never heard of and have never expressed an interest in. This one includes a DVD!

I can only surmise someone gave them money to do a mass mailing the likes of which they have never done before.

It won't be surprising to see a shift in the marketing for various colleges this year, given the economic circumstances. I'm sure I am not the only one who looks forward to the weekend because it means the stock market is closed and I don't have to listen to it 24/7 on the radio, TV, etc. Full disclosure: I'm no ostrich and my day job is as a treasurer for a city so it just gets exhausting.

Youdon'tsay--I can't recall the source, but I hear that the percentiles for SATIIs are not always meaningful. The kids who take MathIIc are going to be the strong math students--otherwise they would take the lower level math SATII. I think the same is true for Spanish because so many native speakers take it. Take a look at the scoring chart--it might show that just a couple of wrong answers quickly pushes the score lower in the 700s. My impression is that any scores in the 700s are pretty darn good, and that the only reason to retake and try to bump it up is if your son is applying to super-competitive colleges, especially techy ones.

(Just found this thread and haven't introduced myself--will get to that in a bit.)

Welcome, astromom.

I thought the same thing about the self-selected math kids taking the MathII. I agree that I'll take anything over a 700, especially since I'd never heard of a subject test before joining cc a year ago. Thanks, cc. :D

Hi all, this is the link to the Collegeboard's new score choice policy, which begins with our kids, the Class of 2010.
Score Choice

Hi momof3sons - thanks for posting that Collegeboard link. It answered some of my questions.

Welcome, astromom.
