Parents of the HS class of 2010 - Original

We ended up on page 3 - that's not good! Nothing new to add, except that I think D will be taking her SAT in December. I started registering her, and then stopped because she isn't sure she'll have time to practice. I think she'll have more study time now than in January during midterms, or May during APs, so it's December or March. She'll let me know tonight.

LIMOMOF2:

We decided on the March SAT. Although water polo season is coming to a close in two weeks, mock trial and MESA math competition are ramping up. Good thing he's a quick starter with his classes, because water polo season starts right when school starts and means from 2-6 games (weekend tourneys included) a week, in addition to practice and twice a week o' dark 30 weight training.

At least by March, we'll have the PSAT results back and have a clearer picture of what needs to be focused on. If he wants to take it again and/or the ACT, there will still be time before any ED/EA applications next fall. He has one SAT II (Math II) done and will take two more (Physics and probably US History) in June. And oh yes, four AP exams in May! No wonder we have to be so strategic in deciding when they should take the SAT/ACT!

We also intend to spend Dec/Jan talking about where my DS wants to apply, which will also tell him how much extra self-study for the SAT he'll need to be doing. DS doesn't seen concerned about mid-terms at this juncture, and his progress report card (comes before the quarter report card) backs him up on this.

D is also considering the Dec. test, but is not sure yet. I think the registration deadline is Nov. 5th so we have until then.

I told her I want to know by morning. She'll probably end up taking it - I figure if she doesn't do well, then she can retake it in March and we just don't have to send those scores. Really, just trying to avoid May, and to save June for SAT IIs. ACT - she'll try to fit that in if she needs to.

I am hoping she will take the Math II and World SAT IIs in June. She needs 2 SAT IIs for one of her reach schools. She is also doing fantastically well in Chem (98.3 average) so maybe we'll consider that as well. I have no idea where to fit in the ACTs.

D wants to spread out her SAT-II's, so she'll probably do Math II in Dec, English in Jan and US History in May. Prepping for the Math and English subject tests should also help her tackle the SAT-I, which she will do in March (when no SAT-II's are offered). And the Hisory SAT-II should help with the AP USH, which she will also take a few days after that.

D and I were looking at the test dates and the potential or definite conflicts, and she remarked that now she understands why there are still so many kids taking them in Senior year! I think for D2 we will start earlier, especially with score choice but maybe take an ACT test earlier with her as well.

I know I had thought out a nice happy testing plan earlier in this? thread, but conflicts, conflicts, conflicts might throw it to the wind...

Currently planning SAT IIs in Dec and SAT I in Jan. Happy with that and that seems fine. If she has a sports conflict in Jan she will just miss it. The problems come with the Feb ACT date is not offered anywhere close to us, sites are over an hour away. Mar SAT, Apr ACT, and May dates all have conflicts! So she might take the ACT in December it will be June for SAT IIs and then it might be ACT again the week after, and miss the school graduation on that day. It really is too bad that they don't offer these more often. And who knows about a second SAT option, I guess Sr year.. She is thinking of a few schools who take SAT IIs instead of SATI/ACT, so getting those in in the strong subjects is important..

At least D2's current sports choices don't have the weekend commitments that D1 has.

vicarious- my D's plan is 2 SAT IIs on each of two dates, I agree that 3 at one sitting is too much. If she does want to retake one of the Dec ones in June, she will do it as the last test after the two new ones.

Good luck to everyone, not only on the tests but on the planning and scheduling!!!

Visiting parent of a '09er here - For those of you that (like our school) do not have Naviance, here is link with a list of schools that have allowed guests to use their Naviance sites to get an idea of how well their students have fared applying to various schools. Every application year and every application is different, but it was interesting to submit D's list of schools on some of these sites to see how many applied, and of them, how many were accepted based on SAT/ACT/GPA, etc....good luck with your crazy year!!!

Naviance

Rachacha - thank you so much for posting that link - what a thoughtful thing to do!

Good luck to your '09er!

jackief - reading your last post made me realize that I'm not alone in trying to figure out the best way to schedule all these crazy tests this year! How insane! I've also given a lot of thought to the timing of the tests - I just wish we would get those PSAT results back a little earlier. I also wish D got home a little earlier each day so she could make time to do a few practice tests. With her sports and music commitments, plus all the rest of her ECs, it's just so hard planning these things out.

Rachacha:

Thanks for thinking of the parents of '10 students. I'm always picking the brain of '09 parents and try to remember to pass relevant info down to the '11 parents (or make them aware that I'm available later, and turn them on to these kinds of web sites.

Darn - I was unable to log onto any of those sites! Has anyone else had a problem?

Figured out I was supposed to enter as a guest - oops. Thanks, again, Rachacha.

By doing a search on CC using school names and "naviance" I also found naviance passwords for 2 local schools (not D's) that are comparable to D's school in stats, so I figure their results are similar.

Sorry about mentioning that U Chicago accept the SATs. Last year when D2 applied to nine schools I frankly remember sending her scores to all the schools.
On another note, I am curious to know how many of your kids are still taking vocab test. My kids' school used Sadlier-Oxford Workshop books since middle school. I think it's a great way to boost vocab.

ontheedge- no worries about the Chicago thing, there are so many different requirements to keep straight! This is your third kid going through the process? I bow to your experience and knowledge!! :-)

I wish we had more vocab in school, but it seems to be up to the various English teachers. D1 had vocab in 9th and 10th but not this year (same teacher as 9th) but D2 does not have any vocab. It wasn't weekly, less often and tied to the current reading..

onthedge, my S sent all his scores to all his schools. Less trouble than trying to figure out who wanted what -- so Chicago got his SAT-IIs. He didn't want to mess with too much stupid detail, which was why Stanford's insistence on their labels and unfolded forms was enough for him to say "Forget it! I'm not applying!"

As the parent who had to remind him to keep up with stupid details, I was also thankful for his appreciation of simplicity. ;)

Well, D just announced to me today that she wants to register for three SAT-II tests for December 6th! My issue is that with a lot of E.C. commitments and some exams looming in the next month, she doesn't have any time (nor any intention) to actually prep for the tests until Thanksgiving break. I think her plan is to take Math II seriously (i.e, prep for one weekend) and treat the other two tests like practice tests. At $9 for each additional test, she does have a point....but still it scares me to let her take them cold like that.

I have just tried to sign up S for Dec. ACTs and the darn site keeps rejecting my credit card info. All of my credit cards!

There must be some silly reason but their error message is no help. I have an email in to them but this is so ANNOYING!

Called the ACT people and they said their payment site is having problems and to try again later. Glad the problem wasn't my credit cards!

D just went in to take her PSAT (I know it's after everyone else, but it's for religious reasons). I hope she does all right. She was sick as a dog the past two days and is still not 100%, but she did say she was not worried at all so maybe she'll do fine.

Queen's Mom--good luck to your D! I noticed both test days were either on Saturday or the holiday and wondered if there were any provision for other days. My S took it on Sukkot cause he would have gone to school anyway (can't take EVERY holiday off, though my first child tried. Crazy, when you're taking mostly AP classes.)

My S is signing up for Sunday testing for the SAT/ACT, however.
