sculaum, I would suggest that you be sure to drive the portion of 101 from Atascadero to SLO. The Cuesta Grade is steep and scary for a novice driver.

As I recall, the rest of the route you are planning is fine, unless there is a lot of traffic.

Quarterly report card is in and things are looking good despite the sick day absences. What I like about S's HS, good for students and parents, is they send progress marks at three intervals before the final (what counts) semester marks are posted. This is particularly good for the juniors since this is THE year, isn't it?

It's WAY too hot for November, over 90 at our house. I really feel for those is TODAY'S fire zone in the Valley, and they are already investigating that one for arson. I hope for some of this nice weather for T-Day when we have the Seattle and Chicago relatives over.

Congrats on your S's report card - glad his absences didn't create a problem for him. I haven't received D's report card yet, and we haven't had conferences yet, so I'm pretty clueless, although I know her test grades have been good overall.

Did you say it was over 90 today? That's really hot for November. It was over 60 here, and I thought that was hot for November...........lol.

I know S2 received his report card last Thursday, but he hasn't offered it up yet. I'm guessing that all those 0s for French homework may have something to do with it.

Ouch, archiemom. D's report cards get mailed to our house, so I see them before she does. She said the teachers had to have the grades turned in by last Monday, but I'm not sure when they're getting mailed home.

Report cards have lost most of their meaning out here with online grading (Aeries). Highly unlikely that there will be any surprises. In some ways, I miss the old days... but on the other hand, I sure like being able to look over the teachers shoulder and see that all scores have been posted properly (there are normally 3-4 mistakes a year)

Online grading is how I know about the homework issue. And likewise, obviously I know what the quarter grades are. DH hasn't bothered to set-up access to the online grading systems, and so needs to have S2 hand over the paper report card. I'll be mentioning it tomorrow at some point. Best to get it over with asap and get on with our weekend.

Our district is supposed to be providing us with online grading at some point in the near future, but so far, I haven't seen any sign of it.

D tells me most of her grades, so I have an idea about how she's doing. Not quite sure what some of her grades will be because she's heard that some of her teachers give grades that aren't necessarily reflective of test averages and homework assignments. We'll see how those pan out, I guess - but I don't think I have anything to worry about - at least I hope I don't.

We also have online grading (Powerschool). It records every grade for every assignment/quiz/test, etc. S is pretty forthcoming about his grades, but like scualum I check it periodically to see if there are any errors, or anything we need to keep an eye on. S got his report card last Thursday and tossed the folded-up paper (gently) at me. That was S-speak for "I did well, but I don't want you to make a big deal out of it."

LOL! Your S and mine must be cut from the same cloth!

LOL. I know what you mean.

S's academic awards ceremony was a few days ago. This was the ceremony for LAST year's grades. As we were leaving Son turned to his freshman sister and said, "[Sis] I expect you to earn one of those medallions for kids that get straight-A's all year. And you better wear it at graduation."

Needless to say, little miss hormone freaked out and told him to stop being proud of her.

DougBetsy - aren't teenage girls fun? My D was a complete pleasure - and then she turned 14! Of course, she's 16 now, and I'm still waiting for her to turn back into her old sweet self............

A little late for an academic awards ceremony from last year, isn't it?

Of course there was an error on D's report card last week. D freaked out. I called her guidance counselor. Everything is supposedly straightened out now, but I am waiting for a corrected report card to be sent home. This is the second error we caught this quarter. The first one we straightened out with the teacher before the report cards were issued (it was clerical). This one was a miscommunication between teacher and guidance. I am getting a little fed up. Are these kinds of stupid errors common? I will have to watch D's transcript very carefully to make sure nothing "erroneous" makes it onto anything sent to colleges.

Oh, but other than this "F" she did really great.

Sorry to hear about the mistake on your D's report card. I'm not sure whether these mistakes are common or not. I haven't ever noticed any glaring errors on my D's report cards. Make sure you save all report cards and then go over her transcript very carefully. I do that too, but I'm really hoping that won't be an issue.

I have never had a problem like this until this year either (well actually we had some problems late last year, but those were not errors; they were guidance stupidity and laziness which were rectified as soon as we got an assistant principal involved). If I was of a suspicious bent of mind, I would think think something is going on in the counselors' office deliberately. Yuk, I hate dealing with that counselor. She is incompetent and arrogant: the unbeatable combination.

I'm sure errors happen occasionally, though usually our problem is a teacher who doesn't get their reports in on time. (Generally just for our useless gradeless progress reports.) My kid recently had his first college planning meeting with his GC and there was no final grade for his physics class last year. I sent an e-mail to his counselor and I believe she has changed it, but I will double check next time we see a transcript. GCs are human and the system doesn't seem to be as automated as you'd think it would be.

One quarter, S1's report card indicated an F+ for precalc (interesting that there even is such a grade). Boy did I freak! Turned out the teacher had misread a B+ when transferring grades from her grade book to the computer. You'd think she'd have been paying enough attention to realize that this particular student (much less any junior in Honors Precalculus) wouldn't have earned an F.

I'm just happy to have the child I deserve after the nagging I had to do with the previous boys. And the checking up online for homework assignments! ;)

So report card time is no big deal at our house anymore. Not that grades are EVERYTHING...I realize there are kids out there with more on the ball than this one, but at least he has the homework thing down. :)

LOL! An F+? That's got to be a first. I'll have to tell my S about this one.

Sometimes my S has a different grade during the progress mark periods because he has missing assignments (usually due to sixth period class absence for sports, on a rare occasion due to illness.) However, the report cards almost always make note of "missing assignments/tests." Thankfully, I believe these are legit since S mentions it BEFORE the report card arrives, and has even sometimes turned them in but just late for the reporting period. He knows the critical mark is at the semester so he makes really sure everything has been handled by then. Either because he participates in class or has had good teachers, he's never had a conflict with a teacher due to his sports commitment.

Go to December. It says the PSAT scores ship during the week of 12/1. It also says PSAT students should go My College Quick Start during the week of 12/15.

Do you think that means the scores will be posted the week of the 15th? It sure would be nice to see them online before Christmas break. (That is, if the schools don't have a chance to distribute them.)
