anniezz: I don’t think OWU even has a supplement…

mazewanderer–University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire!! His stats are fine for admissions, their music program is fantastic, cost is reasonable for out of state tuition as well. We know several kids that are at Bellmont and LOVE IT there, all in music of some kind. Concordia in Moorehead MN is also VERY well known for their music program as is Luther in Iowa. St. Joseph’s College in Indiana has a reasonable music program along with great merit aid and scholarships even for non-music majors. His 29 on his ACT is enough to get him into most schools in the nation. No need to look at test optional schools at all. Yes, his GPA could be higher but often for kids entering music programs they don’t put as much emphasis on GPA.

Congrats on OWU acceptances - everyone keep the success stories coming - love to hear the good news!

Mazewanderer- If your son is a bit quirky too, he could consider Hampshire. It is kind of like Reed of the East Coast. My D goes there so if any questions, PM me. It is NOT for everyone though- definitely for those that follow the beat of their own drummer.

Mazewanderer, another thx for starting this thread! I noticed that someone mentioned Lawrence in Appleton, WI and I totally agree with that rec for your son (they told you St. Lawrence, but it’s called Lawrence). Skidmore may be worth looking at too --not quite as competitive as Reed.

Joining in on the thanks to Mazewanderer! I honestly had heard of almost none of the schools that now, thanks to this thread, make up 90% of my D’s app list. I definitely didn’t know about the availability of merit money for B students. D’s acceptance + merit from OWU makes this week with the kids home much, much easier.

Maze, adding U of Puget Sound too.

I’ve spend a lot of time reading back on this thread but it’s too long!!! Is there a list somewhere of the schools that have been identified here that offer decent merit aid? My daughter would like to go out of state but would need to find a school that offers enough merit aid to bring the cost down close to the cost of an in-state public.

About my daughter, she is a free-spirit (lol) interested in journalism. We live in Michigan. Any suggestions?

I don’t know if there’s a list, but we can start one here.
We can Copy and Paste, and add in colleges in alph order.

Eckerd (FL)
Ohio Wesleyan U (OH)

Adding in where my daughter has applied - I don’t know yet how good the aid will be!

I don’t know if there’s a list, but we can start one here.

Oh, sorry, I should have said I was responding to RTRMOM2’s post asking if there was a list of colleges that gave our kids good merit aid (which also implies they were accepted to the schools, too, I suppose). But maybe the list mamaduck created is more helpful?

Mazewanderer, my D was interested in the West Coast and had worse stats than your son. She wanted to be in a city or cool college town, so this is what our GC suggested. Some went off the list immediately (Stockton was not her idea of a cool town). I don’t know which have music programs. Bear in mind that many kids turn an interest in music into a career by working on the college concert committee or the radio station. Or just starting a band. Of the original list, we are applying to 3.

U of Puget Sound
Evergreen
Seattle U
Lewis & Clark
Santa Clara
U of San Francisco
Chapman
U of the Pacific
U. of Redlands
Chapman
Loyola Marymount.

Some of those were more “reach” than “likely”. We’re also looking on the East Coast, but skipping the mid-west.

I just want to chime in here regarding Puget Sound… Absolutely AMAZING school… in every way. The campus is stunning… and looks like an east coast school plopped down in the PNW… it is in TAcoma which is a great artsy city and very close to Seattle where I would want to be if I was looking for a job. SO many top companies are here. The people at the school are all super nice and accepting, the dorms are HUGE and fantastic, the food is so good I wanted to just stay and eat dinner there. The teaching is so excellent and have won so may awards it’s embarrassing. My S applied, was a B student( but had 2200 SAT’s and was awarded a $20,000 merit scholarship and also met the rest of our need. He ended up going to a school in NY but it was his 2nd choice… and my first!!

My D said, “YES, to the Sweatshirt!”

We are still waiting on Loyola of Chicago admittance, but lets be real, with a 27 ACT (new score) she’s not in the running for enough merit aid to make it affordable. So last week she had a day off school and we went back to UW Whitewater. The campus size is exactly what she wants and she was accepted into the Honors Program. OOS tuition is less than our own IL schools and she got a merit aid scholarship making it affordable with little to no loans. We stopped in the bookstore and bought a sweatshirt after walking around campus for a couple hours. On the way out of town she said, this is my school. So I asked, are you saying yes to the sweatshirt? LOL! We watch WAY too much TLC!

This mama is very happy!!

PS - just wanted to add D got a 4.0 this quarter and didn’t take easy courses either. I’m very proud of her :D

Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is worth looking at – [Methodist University - Fayetteville, NC](http://www.methodist.edu).

My son’s already been accepted, rolling admissions, and got a $12,000/year merit scholarship. 3.2 GPA through junior year.

Thank you all for welcoming me back. I am really happy that many parents found this thread very useful and congratulations to all the parents and kids who got into schools they will be happy with. Kids in the 3.0 to 3.3 are also great kids and there is definitely a school for them (though I am still trying to find one for S2, the kid we are now talking about)

kinderny, my son definitely marches to his own beat and so Hampshire looks interesting and let me see if my son will not reject it for some reason like too far, to cold etc. -:)

I will check in U of Puget Sound and see if they have music program.

How does Lewis and Clark compare with other schools. When we think of Portland, one thinks of Reed.

Let me also check into some of the other schools mentioned. All advice is very much appreciated.

L&C is often compared to Reed in style. It’s not as tough to get in–though no walk in the park. It’s a place for the artsy kid. Good study abroad program. Gorgeous campus. My D felt the AC made too much of their academic requirements and was turned off. That being said, we’ve gotten lots of emails and messages about applying. In the suburbs of Portland, but accessible by shuttle bus.

Chiming in, even though I’m a student. Seconding the recommendation about UPS. It’s an absolutely incredible school, and although I ended up going to a LAC/REU combination school, I debated for weeks about Oxford vs UPS. I got their highest merit scholarship which made UPS cheaper than the UCs.

I also toured Lewis & Clark and have a friend that goes there. If you’re looking for merit aid and want a LAC in or near a PNW city (L&C is actually in a Portland suburb), you’re probably better off applying to UPS or Seattle University (maybe U Portland, but IMO a student who would consider L&C would NOT be happy at UP). I got no merit money from them, and my friend who currently goes there had a much higher GPA and similar standardized test scores and only got abou $10k a year in merit aid.

The school itself is good for a certain type of student. My friend claims it’s the most hipster school in the nation, a vibe I got when I toured the school. Like UPS it’s outdoor oriented, but it seems to be much more service oriented than most other schools. L&C is good for an artsy, service oriented student that fits the stereotypical “Portland” archetype, but for me it didn’t seem like a good fit. One last observation, the sciences facilities at UPS and Willamette (another good PNW LAC in Salem, Oregon) seemed much stronger than L&C.

If you’re considering Lewis and Clark, also consider University of San Francisco. Certainly a B student school, and I believe they give decent merit aid.

Hi Everyone,
Happy Thanksgiving!
I’ve been very busy but managed to catch up with all of your posts last night. The acceptances are SO exciting. Congratualtions, accepted students AND THEIR PARENTS!

I’m going to add school’s that my son has applied to to the list I last saw on Mamaduck’s post. Surprisingly, my S has four applications in, EA, and we thought we’d wait on the SUNY’s until he has results. We’re applying to SAT optional, CTCL schools. Not sure about merit, but most schools that are welcoming and are about educating try to make school affordable. At least one is an LAC, Guilford, that is FAFSA only, which says a lot!

*=my son’s schools

My son played in a collges showcase tournament last weekend and he is now getting calls from coaches at schools that are new to us. Does anyone know anything about St. Thomas Aquinas? Farleigh Dickinson University? There’s also another school in Albany, but I forget the name.

It’s interesting-like starting all over browsing web sites and doing more visits. But, if they want him, maybe they’ll show us some $ love, which would always be nice!

Also, BTW-first quarter grades, highest ever! No C’s! Ha ha, no science this year! Hopefully this will bring up his average so that he actually belongs on this thread.

Hi all… my son has a 3.3 GPA with a 32 ACT (also ADHD, lost his dad to cancer, etc… wrote a great essay and supplemental essay explaining his grades and his upward swing in Junior year…big one). He’s a science/math/language guy (Latin scholar).

He has already been accepted to 5 schools, 4 with scholarship $$:

U of Tampa: 11K/year
Eckerd College: 16K/year
FL Tech: 12K/year
Stetson University: 23K/year
Florida Atlantic: no mention of $$

He has also applied to:
U of Miami
Tulane
Rollins
Loyola New Orleans
U of Rhode Island

Loyola, Tulane and Miami are his top 3. I think Tulane and Miami are reaches, although our consultant said they are targets. Loyola could go either way. His ACT is great for all three, but the GPA could hurt him. We’ll see!!

Good luck to all!!
