Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Joisymom, what great news!

this thread is moving- I missed the latest acceptances! Congrats to NPRmom’s S and idahomom’s S! :D

Thanks everyone! Congrats to NPR and Iadahomom on those accpetances.

5Boys - My d didn’t fall hard for Muhlenberg - it took a while to simmer. Actually great lesson for kids who are starting their search - her initial impression was negative (don’t really know why.) She wanted to get up and leave while we were waiting for info session to start. She left the visit very interested. Although not majoring in theater, music and drama are of interest so the obvious value they place on the arts appealed. The students were exceptionally friendly and polite. There is quite a bit of academic support available for any student who wants to pursue it. She really connected with the quirky/cool tour guide - so that helped too. But what really sold her was admissions interview months later - the admissions counselor’s approach and description of life there just “connected” for her and she felt she would be “at home” there. Also as she began to mention an interest, she got lots of postive feedback from people which just kept improving her opinion of the school. The ED application was a good decision - I dk if she would have gotten in without it.

To those still waiting to get an accpetance, I sympathize. Hang in there and be sure to let us know when the news comes. I will definitely be checking in!

Thanks Joisymon! I am very happy for your D. How exciting! I can’t wait to visit. I’m not sure what my S will think of it. He likes quirky/ artsy kids and is torn between a school like NYU or BU and a smaller school. He will be applying to some audition based schools as well as some schools with outstanding BA theater programs. His drama teacher at his HS is good friends with the head theater teacher at Muhlenberg and she thinks it would be a good place for my S to apply.

As far as the ED thing goes… I don’t think it is good to do if you need FA, so probably won’t do that. But it is sure great to be done at this point I am sure. Do you mind me asking your D’s stats? If not, I understand…

Two of D11’s classmates went to either Sage College of Albany which is coed, or Russell Sage which is all women and across the river in Troy. (There are a few colleges in a consortium called The Sage Colleges). The one that went to Sage Albany was a (high-ish) B student who got a great scholarship there. Around here, B and sometimes C students go to either of these schools. They are good schools but a fair number of students are local- which can turn off those who are not. At one point I think one of them was a two year community college, but I could be wrong about that.

The two women who went there were well rounded- but academic achievement was not their end all, be all. Sage College is in Albany as I noted, and the area is fine if not particularly fun. There are nearby areas that attract young people (like Lark Street) from Sage, College of St. Rose and SUNY Albany.

Troy is not a great town with some really poor/sketchy areas, but Russell Sage is not in the bad part of that town. There is a fair bit mixing with RPI which is not too far away.

For either, I would suggest visiting for fit, before or after acceptance- but certainly before enrolling. Any specific questions just pm me.

I have not been reading cc boards often lately, but I did just spot a few acceptances! Congratulations to your children and to you and your families!

Thanks for the tip. Let me put it to him. Does Loyola need auditions etc? Getting him to apply is challenge but I will ask him to consider it. The only good news is that he has started applying but keeps everything to the 11th hour (his GC remarked be glad that is not the thirteenth hour). He knew the deadline for U of Miami was Dec 1st and he comes to me yesterday and wants something mailed. FedEX charged me an arm and leg.

So yes, I will ask him about Loyola in NO. He has agreed to apply to University of Puget Sound but I need to be on his case. Thanks again for all your tips.

Congratulations to all who have been getting acceptances. That is good news and it reinforces the fact that there are schools for great kids who happen to B students.

You are absolutely right. This thread is a happy thread as it is one where parents support one another. We all have great kids but we need help and we get it by helping each other. Many of the other threads are about competition, “What can I (or my child) do to get a leg up?”

Note to Mazewanderer-- My older S goes to UPS and absolutely loves it! Let me know if you have questions. They don’t have EA (at least they didn’t a few years ago) so your S has some time to apply

Congrats NPR mom on son’s acceptance to Ursinus!

And congrats to Idahomom on Whittier! Whittier was actually the first school I visited with my D (we visited 18 schools total!) and we loved it.

The Duckling just got into her top choice, Rochester Institute of Technology! Now, the wait for Financial Aid (aka, the real acceptance).

Go Tigers!

^^^
Hooray mamaduck!!!

Mazewanderer-- I do think loyola nola is looking for more males, so that might be favorable. my son noticed all the pianos throughout public areas of the school…he was told they are played by students and faculty all the time and that students are often out in the courtyard with their guitars…my son was hooked and has applied.

Onesonmom–your son’s stats closely resemble my son’s (31 ACT, 3.3 GPA). Although he is doing very well his senior year, all As in fact, many schools only consider grades through junior year for scholarships, darnit. Anyway, good luck with Colorado College.

Mazewanderer, there is some kind of audition/portifolio process, but I believe there are still dates through Jan/Feb. I want to underscore that my D is NOT looking at a music program, though she likes an arty environment, so I’m not well-versed in this aspect of Loyola NO. If your S doesn’t want to go whole-hog into a music degree program, just being in that kind of atmosphere may be enough for him. We really liked New Orleans in general, though my D is a bit concerned that the general party-life may be too tempting.

mamaduck, that’s fantastic!!! Congrats to the ducking and you!!

Congrats mamaduck! I was looking at RIT’s website a few weeks ago, and thinking of what a great school it is in so many ways. And then spent the next day chatting with a dad who was an RIT grad (who now works for a wall street finance group.) He had terrific things to say about the place - especially with what’s going on there these days. :)

Thanks for all the “woo hoos”! I am buying the duckling a warm coat for Christmas - the weather is definitely the downside to RIT!

I’ve been watching this thread with an eye to S14. Are any of your kids looking at Virginia schools, and which? I’d love the benefit of IS tuition, given I have D13 and then S17 too…

mamaduck - the weather here in Rochester is great!!! It was sunny and 52 today. No complaints. We get to experience all the seasons (sometimes all in one week) and we appreciate them. RIT’s also a great school.
