Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

I did not know App State was harder for OOS, although that makes sense. (I do know it’s relatively inexpensive for OOS–one reason it’s on the list!) And darn–I guess we’ll see when the decision comes out but DH was really hoping for an excuse to make a visit–he’s a big kayaker.

Re: “weeds-n-seeds,” again, I am not trying to be pejorative. Maybe “earthy?” Whatever spectrum Guilford is toward one end of, I believe WW is farther down that spectrum. (Just like I used to say Kenyon was kind of like Oberlin, only not as much.)

And good to know, mamaduck. I grew up in VA (although childhood was in NoVa) and we’ve always had the long “a” in there (although I guess we were always referring to the trail, if that makes any difference). As far as I know all Central Virginians pronounce it the same way. (Just went and looked at ask.com–sounds like it’s more of a native-to-the-area vs. not thing rather than a north/south thing.)

Welcome, Stillnadine! The word is out, my daughter applied ED to Warren Wilson, because it was the right school for her (she’s heading there next fall!). However, WW will be the first to tell you that it’s not right for everybody. It generally makes the list of known “hippie schools” (other schools my daughter would have applied to RD were were Hampshire, Earlham, Evergreen, Antioch). Warren Wilson is consistently listed in Fiske Guide, The Best 377 Colleges, America’s Best Colleges, and makes the top list of “most green colleges” in several sources (Huffington, USnews, Sierra, Treehugger, etc.). They were one of the first colleges to build an “Ecodorm”.

What makes it right for my daughter is the sense of community and their triad system. Academics, Work, and Service are what makes WWC unique. The students are expected to contribute 15 hours of work per week on a “work crew”, and contribute a substantial amount of service within the local community while earning their degree. The work they do earns each student $3500 towards their tuition.

In regards to your question as to whether WW will prepare your D for the “real world”, I would offer that perhaps working for a part of their educational costs, while giving something of themselves to their community, is great preparation for life after WW. My sister, who is a professor and spent most of her adult years in the world of “Academia” (and research) may even argue that the student experience itself isn’t a part of “the real world” regardless.

Academically, WW is well known for environmental studies and pre-forestry management. They even offer a program in conjunction with Duke University (2 yrs. + 2 yrs. Duke). WW does have core curriculum requirements, so Comp I, II, Math requirement, Sciences, etc. are expected of all students in addition to their major requirements. English is another very strong major at WW and the school has a highly ranked MFA in Creative Writing.

Skye Rios is a recent grad of WW and came to my daughter’s school this year to give a presentation on his research in her Environmental Science class!

My own daughter plans to major in Asian Studies and Studio Art. We looked at 18 schools total and we both felt that she’d found her college when we visited WW. My older son was with us when we visited NC schools and he was more impressed with Guilford (he wouldn’t dreeeaaammm of applying to Warren Wilson lol!). I have a fllickerstream of both schools. Just pm me if you’d like me to send you the link.

MyLB, We live less than two hours away from Appalachian. Tons of kids from our town’s high schools go to ASU. Really good friends of both my kids went to App.
They are all just your basic white bread kids from an upper middle class suburb who were good students in h.s. that played sports, did theater, joined clubs, had after school jobs, hung out together in groups on weekends. …just your basic regular kids. None of them are “tree huggers” or “hippies” or whatever. Although that’s not to say aren’t some of those there too. It’s really pretty much like any state u. only in a really beautiful…but cold…setting.

“Regular” is good! Thanks for the info–hope we have a reason to visit.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will check them out! Spring break is going to be college visit time, and I learned with D13 that the sessions fill early.

Re: App State: my OOS D attends and is finishing up her 1st semester. Has been happy with her choice overall. School is very large compared to high school but she is part of a learning/living community which helped quite a bit with finding a group from the first day. She has admitted to me that there have been days (not so much recently as it’s getting colder!!) where she has gone barefoot, and says there are some who do regularly.

I still would hesitate to label it too significantly “hippie” but there are some free spirits there! She feels sufficiently challenged at this point academically(she’s one of those high scoring/lower gpa kids), but is already over the food!!!

Glad to see so much interest in App State; we stumbled upon it somewhat by accident but she just felt she could belong there after visiting 2 times.

For those with OOS B students at App State: my DD loves this school but it seems like a reach for her. 24 ACT, 3.3 weighted GPA (so unweighted is probably under 3) taking a full load of IB classes. My thinking is that App is numbers driven so she won’t be accepted. Am I wrong about this?

Thanks for the feedback on Emory & Henry. I guess it’s tucked- in-the-corner location doesn’t put it in the crossroads. I’ll delve deeper into their stats for international students, too. We’re from IL, so DS is definitely not local! Love the mascot–a wasp with cut biceps–lol!!!

Actually, deck61, I think the “hippie” comments were directed more toward Guilford and Warren Wilson. My <pretty ignorant=""> opinion of App State would be more “outdoorsy.” I think many of us here have those lower GPA/higher standardized test kids. What was your food comment? And honestly one of the factors for us OOS-ers is the cost–only ~$6k more for us than for in-state kids.</pretty>

nadine–I just went and checked Naviance at DS’s school and the average GPA/SATs for kids admitted to App State from his hs are 2.75/1193. I think that’s what gave me hope DS could get in. (Do you have any idea when notification comes out? I am really trying not to look these things up too much cuz then I’ll start to fret. It’s better for me to have things magically appear in the mailbox. But I would like to know if it’s in the December or more like early 2013 time frame.)

My friend’s instate D (a college senior now) applied to ASU with a 3.4 gpa and SAT in the 1050-1070 range (she took it three times and also the ACT w/similiar results). ASU basically told her she would be admitted if she could get her SAT up but after four attempts she was tired of it and felt it was a futile effort. She ended up at Wingate University with a merit scholarship that brought the cost down to a couple of thousand more per yr. than ASU.

If interested in NC state schools, there’s also Western Carolina University(in the NC mountains smaller school not as cold as ASU), East Carolina University, UNC-Greensboro,UNC-Charlotte. UNC-Wilmington is a tough admit. NC State might be a possibility depending on the student’s intended major. At NCSU you apply directly to your major…therefore it’s a lot tougher for an engineering applicant than a kid applying for Forestry or Sociology.

Small NC privates to consider would be Queens University of Charlotte,Catawba College,Wingate University, Lenoir-Rhyne College,
Lees-McCrae College, Mars Hill College. Queens is prob. my favorite…right in the middle of the most beautiful part of Charlotte.

Just wanted to add that Guilford is not “hippie”. It’s an accepting community, but would not fall into the list of “hippie schools”. Very “regular” looking students, with some artsy students mixed in. Nice diversity too.

Congratulations to everyone on the recent news! That’s great! Everytime I read about these wonderful sounding schools I think “maybe DS should have applied there!”

DS is waiting on 3 more EA, coming sometime in December. He has decided to apply to one RD HUGE reach school-- not sure why, but if he wants to do more essays and send it in, it is fine. I guess that way he will feel like he at least tried.

Thanks, MyLB, for the Nav info. Wish our school had such data. Notification is 1/25/13 which is good to know, for me. No waiting on pins and needles over the winter break.

I’ve posted this in a couple of other threads that I visit regularly, but thought I’d share with all that my DS just got accepted to Tulane! I wanted to let you all know that B students do have a shot at some really great schools…of course, our next hurdle will definitely be the costs, so we are keeping our fingers crossed on financial/merit aid.

Nonetheless, DS now has a stream of solid public/private choices to be thinking of come spring. I’m so grateful for this thread for giving me hope that all was not lost, just b/c my son had a less than steller academic career.

FWIW, my DS was careful to craft his personal statement in such a way as to provide a plausibe reason for his rough sophomore year. He also applied SCEA to Tulane to demonstrate that they were truly a desired place and he was able to expound on that in his “Why Tulane” essay.

@kelijake1987: Congrats to your son. FYI: When my daughter applied a few years ago to Tulane, she got her merit scholarship along with her acceptance, before first semester ended. When her 1st semester grades were out, she emailed a copy ASAP to her Admissions Counselor at Tulane, asking that she be considered for a higher level of scholarship. They doubled it!!! So keep that in mind if his grades go up.

She opted for a smaller school ultimately, but I loved that they responded to new information about her upward trend.

Jane345 - I think I remember that! Hope your D is happy where she chose to go.

Hello, fallenchemist! Yes, she’s very, very happy, but still has a special fondness for New Orleans and Tulane. Grad school perhaps!

Uber-acceptances starting to roll in over on the 2013 thread. Making me nervous…can I hang out her for a while?

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Haha anniezz…I was just thinking it’ll be my kid that brings all the good news to a screaching halt!

Any insights on Washington & Lee University

They kept sending me these e-mails about a full ride scholarship and the deadline was Dec 1st. On December 1st I told my son that he had a few hours left if he was interested and we went out to a dinner party. Surprise Surprise, when we came back late at night, it was done, he had found one essay topic very interesting and quickly came up with something (I do not know what) and says that he had applied for it.

A school that has not been on our list till a few hours before the deadline. What do I do with a kid like this?

S1, was totally different, this son S2 definitely keeps me hopping
