Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

MyLB, meant to respond much more quickly to your last post. You had asked what I meant about my D’s comment “already over the food”. She’s very picky, so I’m sure a lot of it is being tired of the same choices (never mind that I simply rotated about 7-8 menus every couple weeks!!!). I thought the food was just fine and there seems to be a decent amount of variety–the sub sandwich station, the salads, the pizzas, the grill, and the pasta and something else!

Hope this helps–also, you’re right about the cost being one of the most reasonable OOS we’ve seen!

I can tell you one thing - it is almost 100% Greek!

http://www.wlu.edu/Documents/institutional_effectiveness/CDS/WandL%20CDS%202011-12%20Revised%20April%202012.pdf

That may be a good or bad thing for some.
I can tell you, for my daughter (and me), that is a huge turnoff … I mean a complete 100% no-go.
I can’t even imagine such a place.

My SIL went to W and L. It is a very good school academically. But it is small and rural and there is a big drinking culture to go with the good academics. She loved it though.

W&L has a great reputation, but I don’t think of it as a “B” student school. The average student is in the top 6% of class, and average SAT scores hover around 700 per section.

Hmm, W & L does not appear as appealing, it was not a school that we did any reserach on but he has applied anyway. So let us see what happens and but it appears to be stretch any way.

He still needs to apply to University of Puget Sound., Reed which is a stretch but he wants to apply and may be a couple of other schools.

Here in the Old Dominion W&L is harder to get into than UVA. Just sayin’.

So. Twiddling thumbs here. Trying to stay focussed on the other holiday-related things I have to do this week. Trying not to fixate on why the mail that used to come around 1:30 PM hasn’t been showing up til close to 4:00 the last few weeks.

I believe DS will have one online decision on Thursday. Seems like several schools are notifying Saturday. Anybody else have specific dates they’re aware of at schools their kids are extremely interested in?

Just trying to pass the time. . .

MyLB - We got absolutely no mail on Saturday. Not even retail holiday junk mail. What’s up with that?? And every time I get someone else’s mail, I freak out, thinking some terribly important piece that was meant for my son got misdirected.
My son’s #1 choice will notify Friday at 8pm. The one I’m anxiously awaiting just says you’ll be notified by mail by the 15th. They’re known for mailing deisions early though. I’m thinking today or tomorrow.

The waiting is really getting to me too! 3 decisions this week, including the #1 ED school (I expect that one last.)

Cheers to all of you waiting on this thread. I found that after the apps were submitted was the hardest time because we had no idea if we had guessed right when it came to matches for our B student. Good luck and hang in there.

Ooooo–ree–should probably not tell you I found a piece of my mail on the ground a few days ago the day after it was delivered. Good thing it was not a windy day! Not college-related, but I’ve been having so many boxes delivered lately I often have my arms full (and my mailbox is across the street). Having zero mail on any day would freak me out a little–can’t remember the last time we had absolutely nothing in the mail box.

I like to think I’m more curious than anxious re: admissions decisions. We aimed well with the first two and hope we did this time too. But this is the kid who hasn’t visited a single school and it’d be fun to plan a trip or two for Jan-Feb. Tough to do when we don’t know where he’s in.

Jane–thanks so much for the heads up about the potential for extra $$ if the grades go up. As it turns out, DS is having, so far, a very good senior year, academically speaking.

I’m just disappointed about reading some of the stats for the Paul Tulane award…

Heavy - waiting is the worst.

Every afternoon as I’m pulling into the driveway, I look for a large envelope sticking out of the mailbox. Nine schools and he has only heard back from his two safeties. And they didn’t even send scholarship info. Ugh!

Lots of great news in the 80s pages! Congrats all!
Totally agree on the painful wait. My F5 button has never seen so much action. I so wish I could drink! D has 10/20+ apps out (so far), and has missed two deadlines - and doesn’t care. Not having a great end to first semester either. She just doesn’t have her head in the game, and I’m struggling to let her face the natural consequences.
Well, I guess I’m just struggling to face them myself.

What does the F5 button do? Refresh?
I am happy others are feeling as I am. DS has two lovely acceptances, but neither are from his top choices. We may not hear from them until February 1st or thereabouts-EA! What are we to do until then? The holidays will be over months before the news comes. Sigh…it’s going to be a long winter! Thank goodness for this thread.

Good luck to all who are waiting. Your kids give me hope for mine in 2 years. It’s going to be a long two years trying to keep him around a 3.0! Wish me luck!

Just getting caught up here and want to send congrats out to the Duckling on RIT and all the other with accpetances rolling in.

Reeinaz, Annie, Heavy and others obsessively checking the mail: your posts made me laugh! Before my D’s ED acceptance came in, I was feeling positively obsessed! I just know you will get good news - hang in there!

5Boys - to your question re: d’s acceptance to Muhlenberg. She has a 28 ACT, 3.2 weighted GPA with a challenging but not AP-heavy load. Strong EC’s. GC explained grades were affected by serious medical problems/repeat hospitalizations and I believe teacher recs were probably very favorable relating to how she has handled those challenges. Muhlenberg accepts a high percentage of their freshman class ED. Check out their website re: your concerns about financial aid. They have a great rep for being no nonsense on this topic and I believe they have structured it so ED spplicants are not “penalized.”

Even with RIT acceptance in hand, it’s almost the same waiting for the financial aid confirmation. The Duckling knows she is dependent on that, so the mailbox is still being checked with great interest. In fact, the mailbox is the highlight of my day.

Stressful weeks for all seniors…

Interesting conversation with my kid yesterday about the palpable stress in the air at his school, as the most competitive “and douchy (hate that word!)” seniors are bundles of nerves waiting to hear about ED decisions from very selective colleges. He’s had so many kids ask him lately, “Are you applying to Stanford, Vassar, Other Completely Out of His Reach School?” in efforts to size-up the competition. They look very relieved when he assures them that, no, he is NOT.

We had a good laugh at that, but he says it’s made him more tense because he is still waiting to hear from a few of HIS top choices (that those crazy kids would regard as safeties, probably). He hadn’t been that nervous before, but he feels like the tension and competitiveness in the air is absolutely contagious, even tho he is not competing for those tippy-top schools. He says it’s like stepping into an alternate universe everyday, and lots of his classmates are being played by neurotic understudies.

Trying to keep that in mind here. Even if we are cool about all this at home, our kids face a host of horrors all day long at school, for the rest of the month!

My neighbors probably think I am nuts-- every afternoon on my way home from work I pull over by the mailboxes (we have the group type mailboxes for the whole end of our street), run out of the car, pull the mail back into the car and sort through before driving into the driveway. Only confessing on here since others are mail obsessed as well

It’s probably a good thing I don’t have any of DS log-ins to schools or email

I hope everyone gets good news today!

My DS’ one-and-only Early Decision college shows a “release date” on the website as 12/21, other materials specify “mid-December” but every day he believes it could be here early. Sigh. We didn’t fully understand just how selective this college is until after we’d visited and DS fell hard. The school break may turn out to be a series of essay-writing sessions for the other colleges on his list, because truly I am expecting a defer at best, and have tried to gently prepare him for this possibility. I noticed this morning that the college’s page, where he remains signed in, no longer displays his application checklist. eek! Hoping it’s a website maintenance issue. Meanwhile, I hope he doesn’t take a look and see it.

DS has a very supportive GC, thank goodness. Our high school has another GC who is the resident “college expert” but who is, frankly, a huge disappointment as a resource. He had never heard of Evergreen, Reed (!) or Whitman for example. He seems to have his personal prestige favorites, far too regional in my opinion, and directs top students to them. I’m hearing that he is adding to these students’ anxiety now, as if it’s about him and his stats. So - still more pressure on these kids.
