Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

I think Hampshire College is another with portfolio type grading. I thought Hiram was too, but I can’t find that on their website now - though they do have a cool academic calendar of 3 classes in 12 weeks, 1 intensive class for 3 weeks each semester.

Kalamazoo College has a very interesting schedule known as the K Plan. For a preprofessional B student, it could be a great option, [About Kalamazoo College | K-Plan](<a href=“Faculty and Staff Directory | Kalamazoo College”>Faculty and Staff Directory | Kalamazoo College)

I’m actually a student but I wanted to post to maybe give some hope to parents who have kids still awaiting decisions from their colleges.
My unweighted GPA is 3.22 and my weighted is 3.4. I have a 2050 single sitting SAT score.
I applied to schools that are significant reaches GPA wise.
I applied to Lehigh University as a crapshoot because I fell in love. I was not expecting good news. I actually was accepted ED last week.
My family was surprised. I was surprised. My guidance counselor was surprised.

I am 5.5/6 for colleges and I never thought I would be able to get into some of the colleges.

I guess I’m here to give hope to parents of students with lower GPAs.

I also applied to and was accepted to Quinnipiac, Siena, Indiana U Bloomington, Purdue West Lafayette. With money!! I was wait listed at Northeastern and Case Western.
I wish you all luck with your children’s college admissions :)

Congrats, Mamaduck!!

Cbreeze, has your daughter looked at Hendrix? They offer a Pre-Pharm. program (think your D was interested in Pharm?). It’s a CTCL, and weather may be better for her health.

CONGRATS Retrodreamer!!!

The Duckling told me tonight I should seriously consider a career change to advising seniors on colleges. I responded that I thought I was driving her crazy. She admitted I have, but that she appreciated having everything laid out for her to choose from and that many of her classmates are panicking. We will be victorious in our quests, fellow parents, and our children will appreciate us in the end!

kathiep–not sure if I knew you had a kid at Champlain but DS just received an acceptance from St. Mike’s today and is waiting to hear from Champlain. He was deferred from UVM–I was hoping he’d have a reason to visit all three of them. Interesting part of the country. (DH spent a year at UVM back in the day. Part of his see-the-country-through-bouncing-around-to-various-colleges tour.)

My neighbor’s son goes to St Mike’s. he loves it! Just got home from 5 mos in New. Zealand.

MyLB - congrats to your S on the St Mikes acceptance. My son is also waiting to hear from Champlain. He spent last Memorial Day weekend there at a writing conference and fell for the place, especially Burlington, hard.

Thanks, ConfusedMom–I was thinking about you yesterday as I stuck my hand in the mailbox and <again> did not feel any big envelopes. This one was more medium-sized, complete with “Congratulations” on the back, so I’m hoping I’m not reading too much into it. (DS is out of town and I’m very proud of myself for not having ripped into it without his permission.)</again>

And ree–DS (and I) have never visited but I know the place intrigues him because he’s heard that (except for weather), Burlington is a lot like where we live. He seems to want to find a great town for college.

I begged my daughter to consider Champlain, but for some reason she wouldn’t. I think she has a strange image of Vermont, and only a visit would have dispelled it. It makes me sad.

MyLB - I hope there is good news in that medium size envelope. The day after we got the email with my son’s acceptance to UMass Lowell, they sent out letters which said the exact same thing as the emails. It also said “Congratulations” on the outside of the envelope. I wondered if they did that so you would know that it was an acceptance and not assume that it was a rejection since it was a small envelope (said packets would be mailed in mid-January)

Just to throw a little bit into the mix about Burlington. I have not been there for a few years and have heard differing things about it lately. It depends on what you are looking for in a college town. Obviously, it is in a very beautiful part of the country, right on Lake Champlain, lots of outdoor activities (certainly skiing, hiking, boating, etc). I have heard people recently say that there are lots of “old hippies” there, and lots of smoking and cigarette butts on the ground. People should definitely visit and decide for themselves.

MLB
My son just got into St Mike’s too and yes it came in a small envelope with congratulations on the back-kinda looked like a Christmas card. Congratulations on his acceptance. My niece and nephew went there and loved it. My roommate from college’s son is a freshman. I’m meeting her this week for lunch and will get the scoop on it.

Burlington is an interesting city and yes, it does seem to have an unusual amount of maybe homeless people (maybe old hippies) for a small Northern city. I’ve always thought if I was going to be homeless, I would head South! I know Champlain (and maybe UVM and St. Mike’s) do outreach for the community, including this: [Champlain Students Raise $900 for COTS at Annual Tent City | Champlain College](http://www.champlain.edu/news-and-events/news/tentcity12.html) My son said that after living in Burlington, the other college towns pale in comparison.

My son was also accepted at St. Mike’s but Champlain was a better fit for him. They have campuses in Montreal and Dublin which makes study abroad seamless. Montreal is where all the game designers and programmers go - lots of job opportunity. Son is planning on Dublin, but can’t decide fall or Spring.

St. Mike’s is also just a bit isolated, whereas UVM and Champlain are within walking distance of town. We both did like St. Mike’s and if the program had fit him, it would have been more of a contender.

Congratulations to all with good news. DS was accepted to Ursinus, so he’s 3-0-1.

Re: St. Mike’s. my D1 in a junior there. She had a 3.6, and St. Michael’s was her first choice. She has been very happy there. It is true that it is outside of Burlington, a 3 mile bus ride on the public bus, which is free to students. An easy trip, she seems to go most weekends.

My D2 has a good friend who is a sophomore at Champlain and very much loves it.

I love UVM’s campus. D1 just preferred the size of St. Michael’s.

I love visiting!

3.3 UW, 3.7 W, 28 ACT. accepted into UVM, Hartwick, and Washington. Accepted ED at Hamilton College (I have REALLY good ECs). Questions, feel free to PM me.

Congrats Heavylidded! That is indeed a nice Christmas gift!

Wow HL–congrats on the acceptances!! DS is waiting to hear from both of those schools–just might have to go check the mail! Happy Holidays to all!!

Merry Christmas all! Big envelope in the mail from Roger Williams and $11k/yr! 2 down, 8 to go.

MyLB - hope you got some news in the mail!

Huh! The good news is I only had to check the mail twice in this cold rain (that was snow this morning–I liked the white stuff better). Nothing from Wooster or Susquehanna but a big envelope from Guilford that says, “Congratulations!” Not bad for Christmas Eve! Also lots of Christmas cards so I’m making a cup of tea and settling in. Happy Holidays to all!
