My DS was one of the kids who aced the exams but didnt turn in homework, etc. Because homework has become such a big part of grades, it killed his gpa. For him, I thought that a LAC wouldn’t work, because of the core requirements and because I thought that there would be more assignments and projects.

For DD, she does better with multiple assignments and the small class experience, so she is going the LAC route.

Got home last night & there was an acceptance envelope from Roger William with an offer of $11,000.00 per year. So he is now 9 for 9, still waiting on his top 2 choices.

S got a weird letter from Wooster yesterday. The want him to schedule an interview and if he doesn’t schedule one by 2/1, they’ll consider his application withdrawn and place it in the inactive file. Wha??

DS received hi second big envelope yesterday - Ohio Wesleyen, with a $20K scholarship, so now he has two safety acceptances (along with University of Arkansas Honors) and one rejection at Colorado College, making for a bumpy ride as we wait out the RD applications he’s scrambling to complete. Not our best strategy, we see now. But we had a great visit to the Pacific Northwest and have some new schools on the list.

Ree, that is strange about Wooster. Did he submit scores? Wooster requires interviews for merit aid. Or it could be that they have questions about something in his app that they want to clarify?

My D also got a fat envelope from Susquehanna with a big scholarship. She is 8/8 with one school left to hear from. We are amazed at the scholarship offers she has received as well. Hard decisions!

ree–the COW web site for my S also still has that “complete application under review” on it, and no letter here. Not sure if that means they haven’t finished all the EA applications yet or he’s going to get deferred (or worse!). :(

Cbreeze - how would you rate your d’s why wooster essay? I’m guessing that’s what they want to discuss with my son, to make sure a place like Wooster is what he’s looking for. But nearly all of his schools are small, rural, somewhat isolated LACs. Oh well. Guess we’ll see.

But on a more positive note, he was offered a travel sholarship for Beloit, so it looks like he’ll get to visit after all.

reeinaz - I honestly don’t remember any specific essay except the req’d common app one, but none of her essays blew me away (I felt they were too vague and eventually lost my job as essay editor to a teacher). D actually had an alumni interview that she missed, at the last and worst possible moment, due to illness. She very sadly assumed Wooster wrote her off after that, and is happily (and cautiously) surprised to see they still want to take the time to talk to her.

Not saying this at all to brag but just to be a point of reference… My D got her acceptance to W O O S T E R on Dec. 24. I was surprised because I thought decisions weren’t coming out until Dec 31.

My D was also accepted at O W U so we have some overlap with some of you on this board. Yay!
Hope you all had an excellent Christmas/holiday season!

After giving my D some space for a while, I’ve told her the three remaining items (two supplements, one scholarship essay) need to be completed by Jan 1. Fingers crossed!

Oh sure…Go ahead and rub it in Vandygrad j/k. Congrats to your D for her acceptances.

My son is feeling pretty lukewarm about the idea of interviewing. He really dislikes them. Interviews, not the college But I left the decision up to him. Luckily he only has one scholarship essay to write for a NSF STEM scholarship. It’s not due until 2/1, but I’ve been on him to get that done this week so he can be done with it all before the New Year.

Hi All,
My son just found out he’s in a Earlham, with a scholarship! The irony is that the envelope is medium sized and looked like junk mail. It almost went into the recycling and has been sitting on the coffee table for days! Beware: good news comes in all sized envelopes! We are thrilled, Earlham is a great school!
Good luck everyone!

NPRMom, can I tell you, I’m a little jealous? Earlham was my first choice for my D, but she chose another school ED. I absolutely love it, and think that it really is a gem. Has he visited?

ree, I hope your DS interviews with COW, but even if he chooses not to, he has some other great options already!

DS got home last night and finally opened those two “Congratulations” envelopes that I’d been managing to keep from tearing into. He is indeed in at St. Michael’s and Guilford.

At this point I have to give a shout-out to Guilford. I was doing a little mental tallying last night and over three kids we’ve had ~25 acceptance letters to date from various schools. Guilford’s was by far the best. A very personal letter that spoke in depth about his application, including parts of his essay and what that said about him as a person. It was so welcoming–DS will definitely be making a nice, long visit to explore what looks to be a very special school.

MyLB- my cousin’s daughter goes to Guilford and is very happy there. She’s a kind of unusual kid, but it seems that Guilford is very accepting of all personality types.

Congrats MyLB…Our next door neighbor’s D graduated from Guilford a couple of years ago. She went on to NYU for grad. school but says she would love to come back to NC and live in Greensboro…loved the town. There are lots of college students in Greensboro. Besides Guilford there is UNC Greensboro,Greensboro College, North Carolina A&T University,Bennett College (small hbcu women’s college) and the community college.

Guilford recruited my niece for volleyball. They made her a good offer but she turned it down for a big state u. My brother was very impressed with the campus visit.
Our grandmother and her twin sister attended Guilford. Class of 1918.
