Parents of the HS Class of 2013 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

JoisyMom, thanks for following up. I’m definitely going to reach out tomorrow. I’d love to check into TCNJ for DD and was wondering what her chances were. Not that there is any guarantee, but it might help to give me some idea.

Just an FYI if anyone here is waiting for App State. Happened to check for DS and decisions have been posted (no e-mail or anything, but I thought I remembered decisions would be out by the end of January). It was a no-go for DS, although this was a school DH and I were more interested in than he was. Honestly, I was a little surprised given what Naviance said about this school. Ennyhoo. I guess the good news/bad news is it looks like we have to go visit Montana.

Sorry MyLB. As we all eventually learn going through this process (& this is my second go-round), college admissions are certainly capricious. At least it sounds like your S will not be too upset.

Oh I don’t think he will be, but thank you for the sympathy. He’s pretty quick to move on from these things, although nobody likes any kind of rejection.

He has some good acceptances already but he didn’t apply to many big schools. I told DH if App State came through, maybe we could nix Montana altogether (we live in VA). It’s all good, although DH was hoping to get to take him to a visit to Boone–great kayaking around there!

I can’t help but feeling a bit smug that Mayor Bloomberg admitted to earning mostly C’s in high school. He’s indeed lucky that Johns Hopkins’s took chance on him–though something tells me that they probably won’t do that for anyone these days. And I suppose it was good thing that Bloomberg didn’t have to contend with all those standardized tests he’s such a fan of these days. He also claims that big class sizes didn’t make a difference on his schooling. Perhaps if he’d been in a class of 20, the teacher could’ve motivated him to get A’s

Good news - DS was accepted to OWU with a huge scholarship! I guess we will be traveling to Ohio to check it out. Bad news is that he was rejected by Lake Forest and Beloit. So he’s 5-2-1 now. He will be sending more info to his deferral school (his ED HMFR), so fingers crossed on that one. And he has several decisions he’s waiting on.

Regarding Naviance–although our school “uses” it, they do not input the data for the scattergrams so these are not available. Makes the whole thing pretty useless. I suggest using the Cappex web site and look at their scattergrams.

Just wondering if anyone has heard from Goucher? D applied EA and they said decisions will be mailed out by February 1. I know that’s still a few days away but I thought we’d hear by now.

DS is also waiting on Goucher. I hope it comes earlier rather than later, but it might not be until 2/1.

Just checked the Goucher forum, and it seems last year most letters were mailed 2/1 but some were mailed later. So we have to wait.

Congrats on the acceptance and $$$ at OWU pkdof13. I’m surprised by Beloit and Lake Forest given that news.

Re the scattergrams… I asked and lerned that the datapointa for GPA are the final GPA of the students at the end of their high school years. With the increasing number of AP classes and in many cases the increasing effort put forth, the final GPA can be rather significantly higher than that they used to apply, which is generally the GPa after junior year. Makes a difference I think, at least in some cases.

Thank you, Ree. It just shows you how arbitrary it all is.

Hello from a long time lurker on this thread. I’ve learned a lot here!
S (3.0 GPA, 24 ACT) got a letter today from SUNY Potsdam inviting him to apply to this program. The website says “Bridges provides entry to Potsdam for students who do not meet the normally applied admission criteria but who possess the potential for academic success.”
We’re well aware that his stats are on the low side, but we thought he had a reasonable shot at Potsdam. He has good recs, ECs and essay. I guess the SUNYs are more stats-based. In any case, we and he are not necessarily opposed to him applying to the program. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

^^binghamton is apparently doing this program as well…it sounds very interesting so if the student is truly interested in the school, merits further investigation…

Thanks pkd. I guess we’ll have to be patient for a few more days.

I think each high school chooses when and what to enter for the data on gpa and test scores that ends up on the scattergrams. I know my daughter’s high school doesn’t update with any senior year grades. They also don’t update if the kids re-take the SAT or ACT. In my daughter’s case, that will make her ‘dots’ deceptive, because she retook the ACT and raised her composite score by three points.

2nd semester starts today. the beginning of the end.

Naviance is such a great tool. It’s a shame that not all schools utilize it to its fullest.

Our school inputs GPA from end of junior year - they don’t update after mid-semester Senior year.

Scattergrams are used, even if only one person has applied in five years. They do update with SAT/ACT, too, to utilize the combined 2400 and combined 1600 fields.

I just wish they’d input the GPA starting at the end of freshman year or at least at the end of sophomore year as people really start looking during junior year, not afterwards. So, I’m pushing that with the guidance people and principal. Maybe they’ll do it before the next one gets to her junior year.

^^HL–does that mean she’s decided on Earlham?

WOO HOO!!! I am so happy for you and your daughter! Love Earlham College :).

Just to update on us, my D has completed her housing application and her meal plan is chosen. She started her FAFSA this weekend. It’s feeling rather real now that she’s actually going to Warren Wilson College this fall!
