Yes GolfFather, I am aware of this. I only meant to say that I really don’t know much about Guilford beyond the fact that it’s a member of CTCL, and whatever I’ve read on its web site as well as in Loren Pope’s “Looking Beyond the Ivy League.”

Here, let me make your Saturday night a little more interesting:

A reminder for new posters - There are wonderful reviews here: [CampusVibe - Recent College Videos, Photos, and Visit Reports](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vibe/) Make sure to post your review there after your visit and then just post a link to it on this site. It would be a real shame if the only people that learn about the schools you visit are posters on this thread. Here are four reviews on Guilford, including one from me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vibe/guilford-college/

Just posted a Visit Report for our visit to Montana State - MSU Friday. Most interesting thing to Mom on the visit was that they have gun racks/storage/cleaning rooms in the dorms. Yikes!! so different from our region - evidently a lot of students go there for hunting and fishing (and of course skiing).

It was just so freaking cold there, but the snow and mountains were beautiful. They are really striving for academics at the school and there were a lot of activities with student involvement going on. My daughter and a friend wanted to go back at night for the $2 movie (Argo) and as I was dropping them off I saw hundreds of students lined up outside in the cold to get into some event at one of the halls.

Overall I think it is a wonderful school for someone who is really interested in outdoor skiing, hunting, fishing and is used to that type of weather. I don’t think it is going to be her choice. I had to remind her that she has never once gone outside to go hiking, skiing, hunting or fishing. She goes to the beach and surfs and wake boards :)

Snowboarding or skiing is a lot like surfing. Only the water is just a little harder. ;)

Seriously, people who enjoy surfing should like snowboarding or skiing very much.

If one is dressed properly, there is no discomfort from the cold weather.

kathiep - thanks so much for the info. on where to find reviews. I read the reviews on Guilford and it definitely merits a visit. I’m not sure if we can tack it on to our trip to Roanoke in two weeks (it’s really hard to fit in college visits around DD’s play rehearsal schedule) but if not, we’ll just have to make a special trip back up there. It sounds lovely.

For anyone interested in Goucher - I just happened to speak to someone tonight whose daughter recently graduated from Goucher! She had nothing but fantastic things to say about the school. She described it as a very warm and nurturing school; it’s not only that it has small classes, but the profs seem to take a genuine interest in their students and really mentor and guide them. While this can be helpful to any student, it was particularly helpful to her daughter as she was quite shy and not overly confident. She said that her daughter really “found herself” at Goucher and both mom and daughter couldn’t have wished for a better school for her. Her only complaint was the lopsided ratio of women:men (more girls!)

Just thought I’d share…

terrific4, Did you know my middle child is a Roanoke grad? Great little college!

terrific4

You just gave me the greatest gift: that review of Goucher. Since my son was in 10th grade and we visited Guilford, that was the school I fell in love with and it’s the place where I saw him. I just knew he would be nurtured there and that he would be able to find himself. I like Goucher, (his 1st choice and the school he will attend,) but I hadn’t fallen in love with it. Your post just gave me the push to feel confident that he will be nurtured and nourished at Goucher as well. Thank you.

A reminder to all, I have blogged about our college visits and have photos and our comments about many schools. For my daughter we saw Skidmore, Binghamton, Wesleyan, Wheaton, Smith, Vassar, Oneonta, Dickinson, Gettysburg and maybe a few others in 2008. For DS, we have Guilford, Warren Wilson, Ursinus, Goucher, McDaniel, Earlham, (heaven on earth) and Juniata, and maybe one or two more. I’ve been advised not to post the links here, but if you want to see them, PM me.

LOVE this thread!

idahomom, I realized that link I posted last night has admission rates on the lower right hand column, and in addition compares that particular college’s rate to its selected “peer group”

It’s interactive and really handy to check several colleges’ rates quickly, but you’d still have to create your own ranking list. Mine is on the back of the the electric bill envelope :)

Here is the link to the article again

And here is the link to the interactive data itself
[Who Does Your College Think Its Peers Are? - Administration - The Chronicle of Higher Education](Who Does Your College Think Its Peers Are?)

Click on the blue “Load Interactive” button, then you can use the tabs across the top for types of colleges, then the alphabetical list down the side to find the college.

NPRMom, If you reviewed those colleges here on CC, you certainly can link them. You just can’t link to competitor sites.

Thanks kathiep, but my blog is more than just college visits so I’d rather give the links to those I “know” here.

I just reviewed my college visit posts and found I also have Franklin & Marshall (twice) and guest posts by friends who were touring with their kids for Ohio University and SUNY Geneseo.

Of course, nothing is the same as visiting, but at least one can get a glimpse of the architecture, etc.

^love Roanoke too :)

Welcome newcomers to the thread!

@onesonmom, I am so happy to read your update on your son’s acceptances! Western Washington seems to be such a great fit for him too. I don’t know much about Willamette other than it’s great for merit aid. Can’t wait to here more after your visits.

I have a flicker stream of Guilford from D’s visit last April. Gorgeous campus, recently updated science dept. facilities/new building, phenomenal dining hall food too (found out the hard way just how important a factor this is with S’11 :O). Feel free to pm me for the link to Guilford pics!

Thanks oneson-- I will look at these links today. Good luck with your ED result! A few weeks till you hear?

I am looking at flight prices today and then we need to decide on visits soon to accepted schools. DS had 2 more to hear from, but that won’t be until end of March so I don’t think we can wait until then to decide on visits. Seems like unfortunate timing, but I’m not sure what else to do.

Do any of you have suggestions on what kids should do in the summer before college? I wanted D to get a job but it is going to be difficult for her to find something that will fit around the family vacation in August. She’d have to quit after only 1 1/2 months of working.

Of course, she wants to go on an independent film study in Italy (sponsored by Santa Barbara Comm College). Probably not going to happen because it costs $4,000 which is the exact opposite of getting a job to save money for college. And, she is only 17 and pretty sure they didn’t mean for minors to tag along on the college trip.

DS will continue to work at the same part time job he has had for 3 yrs. Am hoping he can up his hours though.

My older two worked the summer before college-- they needed money for college expenses we weren’t paying for. Maybe your D could babysit if she needs a job where she could be done in early August? Not for everyone I know, but my oldest had a part time job plus filled in with babysitting

I expect this one to work as well-- He had a part time job last summer, but will need to make more $$ this coming summer

kathiep, now that you mention it, I think I did know that your child attended Roanoke. A son, right? Very involved in outdoorsy activities? (Sorry if I’ve gotten you confused with someone else!) I remember reading really good things about it so we’re excited to visit. Our dealings with Roanoke thus far, which have involved numerous emails to DD’s admissions rep and one or two to the theater dept. have been just wonderful.

NPRMom, I’m so happy to have been helpful to you! It’s so important for us, as parents, to feel really comfortable with where our kids are going. Near or far, they’re leaving us and that can cause as much anxiety for us as for them. Although DS1 seemed to be really happy at Case Western, I’m not sure it was the absolute best fit for him. DD1 is graduating from Brandeis in May and that was the perfect school for her. I only hope that we can find the perfect fit for DD2. Certainly, if I get anymore info on Goucher, I will share. I’ll pm you for the links to your blogs as well.

jkiwmom, I’ll pm you for Guilford pics too!

What a great thread!

I can’t pm anyone; I don’t have 15 posts yet! :(

terrific, can you tell me what about Brandeis made it the perfect fit for D1? DD has applied there.

Coral -
There are a few summer internships out there for high school students/grads. DS applied for an 8 week, paid BofA leadership internship. I’ve seen a couple of others but can’t remember which companies were offering them. Good experience and a paycheck? Woohoo! I’m sure they are tough to get but worth completing the application. At this point, what’s one more??? Our college counselor posts internship opportunities on naviance.
