Parents of the HS class of 2014 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

So funny that my D can’t wait to get out of the PNW and explore living in the midwest or east coast. Her comment, “I can always come home, but how will I know if I won’t like another environment better if I don’t give it try?” You just never know… :-)

You can imagine our friends and family reaction when we told them DS would be leaving all so “72 and sunny” San Diego to go to college in the coldest place imaginable, 3000 miles away:) My S said, " how many days of warm and beautiful beach sunsets in Dec/Jan can you really handle anyway?" … LOL!!! He just got home yesterday, after 2 days of delayed flights because of ice storms. I think he is happy to be home… and yes, it is 75 and sunny here today… oh well… off to the beach:))

I’m just glad the last of the ACT’s are over for D. Now I can only hope that she brings up the score some. She’s leaning strongly to Roanoke College. A visit there in early December really swayed her in that direction. She’s hoping to get invited back to the scholarship programs in February. She will also be going back to do an overnight in a dorm. She really, really likes her admissions rep…and the rep is the only one that has had constant contact with her throughout the process. Four of the five other schools to which she was accepted haven’t made any contact with her. Hoping we can get more FA from Roanoke. We’ve also identified other scholarships for which she qualifies so I’m hoping those might bring more aid.

5boys! Thanks for your advice. My S knows Colby is a long shot and is busy now applying to many schools - 11 in all. St Lawrence is definitely on the list - thanks to your advice early on… My S is interested in Neuroscience and St. Lawrence has a strong program.

We just received notice today that S received a presidential scholarship from UVM -12k / yr -4 yrs. It made my S smile! I am happy for him …just need to get those essays done and submitted…and wait…but it is good to know he has one good option!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

We are all smiling here as the “colored” envelope arrived today…is K2s first choice--  Also had the merit money in it.
the only school that might displace it sends decisions in early Jan…so I think K2 will wait a bit to see how that rolls.
An RD decision for the tie for 3rd arrives in April and with this envelope today, K2 won’t wait to decide.

So K2 is 5 for 5 so far. Having had some rocky times in hs…it’s nice to see some successes.

Again, Merry Merry Christmas!

Congrats Fogfog on the acceptance and K’s #1 choice! How exciting!

Hope everyone on the board had a nice holiday or day off for those not celebrating Christmas. Time with family and friends can be stressful and memorable all mixed together.

D threw us a curve today–“I’m thinking of applying to Colorado State U.”. Hmmm… Wasn’t on the radar previously, but with WUE exchange, the cost could be less than in-state options, which she knows may be the deciding factor. Does anyone have any experience with CSU? Everything on paper looks like a good fit–large school with sports, smaller college town, Greek row, within an hour of a major airport, has D’s intended major, etc. Would love to hear from those who know someone who goes there if it’s a commuter college where many go home on weekends. That would be the deal-breaker for D. She does not want to be “home alone” in her dorm. Thanks!

Congrats onlyone mom and fogfog! Wintriest, thanks for the welcome back, still owe you a PM!

A momentous day! D hit the send button on her final three college applications fifteen minutes ago! OK…I will admit the “no shopping until they are completed” rule did help with the motivation ;-). So, the waiting continues, but the nagging to get the last apps in is over. Y-E-S! I’m relieved and I know D is beyond thrilled. The three today were easy applications to state safties (CSU, OSU, WSU) where she knows she’ll get in. One had no essay, one used the common app essay with no supplements, and the other had six small 100 word max questions. Way, way easier than the match and reach schools previously applied to. This process has been exhausting and stressful, but it’s also been a great life lesson on the advantages of getting assignments completed before the final deadline. We are happy with her choices and look forward to deciding together where she’ll go to college next fall. Onward!

Congrats FogFog! 5 out of 5 Bravo ! Momofwon congrats to you ! I am jealousy -S is still working on the last 5…,2 are almost done and 2 we may skip…1 is due in Feb…However S is getting excited about UVM and hoping to get an invite to the honors college but he still wants to finish his apps he started…slept until 2 today and is just getting started on finishing up the essays…

Wonderful to hear about merit money, acceptances, and getting the last remaining applications out the door!

D2 sent her regrets and/or application withdrawals to the non-ED schools. My guess is that UC will ignore her email and she’ll be getting some snail mail results from them in the spring.

Oh, good – my boy’s not the only one.

I typically harangue him out of bed at noon, 'cause I don’t want his body clock completely fouled up when it’s time to get back to school.

Now, if he could just finish those last 2-3 apps … .

if only the boy didn’t blow it too badly with his fall semester grades. Letting him play football for the first time as a senior was the biggest parenting mistake we’ve ever made! Nonetheless, here’s to hoping none of his offers gets rescinded.

Austin College - accepted with merit $
Baylor - accepted with merit $, invited to apply for automatic admit to law school program
Eckerd - accepted with merit $
Emory & Henry - accepted with merit $, invited to interview for honors program
Hampden-Sydney - accepted with merit $, honors program
Ole Miss - accepted with merit $, waitlisted for honors college
Rhodes - no response to EA yet
Roanoke College - accepted with merit $, waiting on honors program
Southwestern University - no response to EA yet
Texas A&M - no response yet (only app not sent EA)
Texas Tech - accepted, no merit $
UT at San Antonio - accepted with merit $
Trinity University - accepted with merit $
Tulane - EA deferred to RD

Baylor, Emory & Henry, Hampden-Sydney and Ole Miss are leading the pack at this point. They’re all very different and have very distinctive pros and cons.

Not bad for a solidly “B” student!

Good news to report here-- D got her acceptance email from one of her favs this am–Indiana U.-Bloomington :-). Although it wasn’t a reach, it’s still nice to have a confirmation in writing. Go Hoosiers?

Congratulations to all Ds and Ss (and parents!!) on the acceptances!

momofwon- my parents were Hoosiers and I could hear my mom singing the fight song when I read your post!

I’ve been hanging out on the Musical Theatre thread, but have been a loyal lurker. Son has had 8 academic acceptances so far, some with great merit money, but alas, most leave him with only one foot in the door since he must be accepted artistically through an audition. The auditions will occur in January and February and results won’t be known until late March or April. I must admit that he has had much more success being academically accepted than I thought possible last year, so to 2015 parents of 3.0 to 3.0, it will work out.
Happy New Year to all!

Great to hear all the successes so far! My S has one acceptance, one rejection, and one result not due until late next month. I’m anxious for him to get a few more applications in, but writer’s block has reared its ugly head. Instead, he is hard at work trying to salvage his AP Bio grade. It is hard to fault him, as there is a very real danger that offers could be rescinded; in January he’ll likely have to withdraw from one or two AP classes. So heikedog I feel your pain.

Seriously considering the kind of “incentive” momofwon used to get the essay revisions done (will shop for that final Xmas gift together when essays ready to ship). At the same time we wonder, if he can’t even bear to rework a simple paragraph about his planned program of study is he going to fail when he gets to college?

Want to be a good parent here, but it is unclear how to know how hard to push and support. He says he wants to apply to these schools . . . but he’s paralyzed.

I feel you, crow lady. My D got sick and therefore behind on everything, classes and apps. She had to drop an AP as well. We just had to prioritize and have her focus on smaller chunks of work because the whole was overwhelming.

My D was stuck on finishing 5 supplements this month. She also had two friends’ parties plus the holidays coming up. I gave her a deadline…all had to be done before Christmas. Two to go to the first party, the other three to go to the second. She tends to work better when she has a deadline, and it worked. All her apps are in.

Think about what motivates your son and if a deadline will help. Breaking things down into smaller tasks also helped. A deadline or incentive might break the paralysis. You might also think about having him work with another adult or older student. That helped my D early on.

Hang in there and let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Thanks LisaK, we managed to get through another supplement today. Only one more supplement to go – plus one scholarship essay and one honors college essay. And a tweak to the Common App essay. Home stretch.

I can empathize – one more essay, one more application done
(bringing the total to 9).

Possibly 2 or 3 to go, possibly none.

It’ll be interesting to see if last week’s deferral (and its request
for next trimester’s grades) sparks any academic improvement.

crowlady … it’s AP bio that may be my son’s undoing as well. His teacher has room for improvement, and he’s most definitely a liberal arts kid!
