Well, biology is one of the subjects my S wants to study – he’s always been a science kid and is also taking AP Chem and AP Calc C. It is just all too much. Biology is the one worth keeping, in my biased opinion as a biologist ;-). Too bad it is nothing but endless worksheets!

I’m sad that this break is over tomorrow. Though we spent a huge amount of it on homework and college apps we’ll have even less family time
once classes and work start up again.

For those of you in the frigid parts of the US, stay warm! And remember, it’s not too late for your S or D to consider colleges in the mild and surprisingly sunny (this weekend) Pacific NW ;-). How ironic is it that D wants to go to school in the midwest or east? Go figure. It’s -21 near her Aunt’s house this morning in southern Wisconsin and a relatively balmy 45 at our house. Let’s see if the enthusiasm for attending a school in a totally different and icy cold environment wanes after this weekend. Oh, and on the plus side, Seahawks fans don’t have to worry about attending a freezing cold game outdoors this weekend. :-).

Done, DONE, DON*E! My daughter finished the supplement on her final application last night (due today!) and pushed the button. She looked really happy and relaxed this morning, but of course I expect the stress level to increase as we approach decision day. She applied to a few schools with rolling admissions that I expect to hear from earlier but not the ones she really wants to go to, and of course money is a big issue.

I filed the FAFSA (and will file my taxes on the first e-filing day, 1/31), working on the CSS for 3 schools (one of which is an extreme reach, one for which I really doubt she’ll get enough money, and one she really wants to attend). The other 4 are FAFSA only. And then we wait. The first half of the year here ends in 2 weeks. She’s still doing 4.0 work with a rigorous schedule so I’m cautiously optimistic!

Congrats to all of those who are done with applications. We submitted three more today (the ones that just needed a tweak to the main essay and didn’t require supplementals). Only RPI is left, the one that needs an art portfolio (almost done) and a supplemental (started but not finished). Then there’s the last few scholarship applications.

My S is withdrawing from Calc C next quarter and aiding instead. This should let him focus on doing better in his other classes. It was a tough decision to make – none of us wanted the W on his transcript but he still has plenty of tough classes. Maybe he’ll even be able to get more sleep. His teachers all want him to do well and are offering plenty of help. Maybe he’ll finally learn how to write a 5-paragraph essay without putting in a masters-thesis-level effort for an essay half the length it should be. He shared that a big part of the problem is that he just doesn’t agree with the prompts (and he’s probably right that some are ill-posed). So we are trying to help him learn how to deal with that situation. That’s a life skill for sure: plenty of real-world cases where you may not agree with a request but have to produce something anyway.

Meanwhile, my S’s It’s Academic team did well today so is advancing to the playoffs. Which of course will happen in April, that stressful decision-making month. If you aren’t in the Baltimore/DC area, It’s Ac is a local TV quiz show for high schools. Fun if you like trivia!

Hi, all. I’m at the gate waiting for my flight back and skimmed posts. Looks like we actually have a few on here from the Baltimore Washington area since I saw a reference to It’s Academic and to northern Virginia.

DH mentioned on us way to the airport that we should fill out FAFSA and CSS just to see even though we are expecting to be full pay. So guess we’ll be filling those out! Oy vey. Of course he leaves tomorrow for China so I guess I will be the one tracking down info an love talking to our accountant!

On another note, sure looks like we picked the right week to be in Hawaii. Dumb luck but I’ll take it.

Not really, novamom, I did mention It’s Academic in this thread!

WE ARE FINALLY DONE WITH COLLEGE APPS! (well, except for a little mopping up)
The last supplemental essay and an art portfolio went to RPI today. Now my son can focus on next week’s midterms (ug).

Hi all, I haven’t been around for awhile but I have been lurking. I thought I’d post DS’s results thus far, if only to help future applicants…

GPA: 3.4
ACT: 30
SAT: don’t ask

These were all Ed/EA applications into Engineering where applicable. Waiting for a few RD’s too.
Bucknell ED: rejected (not a big surprise, no hooks, but hey, we tried)
Northeastern: deferred
Xavier: accepted, merit
Loyola Maryland: accepted, no info yet on merit
Purdue: accepted, no info yet on merit
University of Dayton accepted, no info yet on merit
Fairfield: accepted, merit
Quinnipiac: accepted, merit

So 6 acceptances, 1 deferral, and 1 rejection. So far the results have all been in line with what I would have predicted.

After the Bucknell rejection he hammered out a few more apps but I think this was more to boost his psyche than anything. We will wait until he receives all responses but in the meantime I am going to plan a couple of trips for “accepted students days” to those that were early favorites that he was accepted to.

Continued good luck to all, most on this thread seem to be doing better than the rest of CC would have us believe our “B” students could achieve!

^^^ Tell your S congrats!!! My D would kill for that 30 ACT. The highest composite she got is a 25 and the highest subscore was a 30 on the science. Math drags her down. The other subscores are usually in the upper 20’s with a 28 in English and 26 in Reading. She submitted 6 apps and got 5 acceptances (all with merit) and 1 deferral (which was not her top school anyway).

She goes to a private school with a rigorous college prep. She’s only in pre-calc now and that’s what may have hurt her math scores. Math has never been one of her strong suites. Her UW GPA is 3.7 going into mid-terms this week. Hoping that stays up there.

As always, best of luck to all those parents and kids in this final leg!! Thank goodness I already got my FASFA in, and will revise it when I get my taxes complete.

thank you scsiguru I will tell him. The ACT 30 was after about 8 hours of test prep with a private tutor, which raised his score 5 points. Totally worth it imo. And he is a bit further along in math (taking calc now) so that probably helped. Congrats on D’s 5 acceptances.

Once again I am happy to see that the prevailing cc: wisdom that our kids are below the line for college acceptances is just not true.

Well I haven’t been on for awhile because I am busy with my new job and I am way behind reading post…

Congrats to all who have early acceptances and are done with college apps.

My S now have two acceptance with merit - UVM and UNE ( university of New England)

both safety schools. I was surprised S heard so early from UNE because he applied RD - maybe they have rolling admissions?

S has had several college interviews over the last week…one more to go. In Feb we are going to student acceptance day at UVM - This will be the first time touring the school.

We are done with FA apps and have moved on to scholarship searching and yet again…essay writing …looking forward to April!

D14 got invited back to the Roanoke College Scholars Competition. Since it’s only a 4 hour drive for us we will be going. She’s really excited about Roanoke and has really clicked with her admissions counselor. They have had some great communication via email as well as over the phone. We sent in the admissions deposit to at least hold a place for a nicer dorm. Roanoke is her 1st choice right now. She’s been accepted to 5 schools and deferred at one. It’s funny, the other four schools to which she’s be accepted have had little or no contact with her. In fact, one school (to which she’s been accepted) actually sent her a letter telling her she was not qualified to enter the osteopathic program. She was totally confused since she did not even apply for that program. I would definitely knock that school off the list if they can’t even get something so simple like that right!!

Anyway, I’m hoping she can win some more nice merit aid in addition to what she already received from Roanoke. Wish us luck!

Good luck to your daughter, scsiguru! My son was also invited for the spring scholars competition after declining in the fall, but Roanoke has completely fallen off his list at this point. It’s a lovely campus and close to family so his decision saddens me just a bit.

Shout out to the Seahawks who are going to the Super Bowl. We screamed so loud at the house that the dog ran and hid in the master bathroom. Poor thing thought someone was getting hurt. :-).

My S14 had a good phone interview with Hamphire College yesterday. Otherwise life is slowly getting back to normal while we wait. Though with the snow days and the new kitten I couldn’t get any work done at home LOL. S16 (who is below 3.0 right now) is starting to hear from colleges post PSAT. Wishing he’d gotten better grades in 9th grade. At least he might be more motivated now!

Hope everyone is getting a break with the apps. in.

K2 made a decision from all of the EA results (and one deferred) and bought a sweatshirt.

So I guess the RD app and the deferred status on one won’t matter.
We have advised K2 to have the hs send the transcripts of 1st semester to those 2 schools in case someone changes their mind…

Now to keep someone from too much of a sr slump…

After a very trying semester of mono, numerous absences, major stress, and playing catch-up with schoolwork, the first admission decision arrived today. A large envelope with a big gold seal and good news inside for sure! Of course, DD is out for the evening so we have to wait!! It’s one of her safeties but no matter…it’s a yes and she’s going to be overjoyed. It’s been a hellish midterm week, but with a sweet ending. We are ecstatic!!
