Congrats on all the acceptances! We’ve finally got the last one, Hampshire College. Final tally: 9 yes, 1 no. I can’t even remember now how many were safeties or matches or reaches. Given the disparity between scores and grades we weren’t sure what to expect. We’re going to UMCP’s accepted student day tomorrow and RIT’s next Friday. Whee!

Congrats crowlady on being done. D is “waiting” for one last school, but its low on the list of places she wants to go. G’pa will be disappointed if she gets in and doesn’t go, but he’s not the one going to college, or paying(!), so not much weight there. D has lots of great options and the decision is coming down to cost. A very difficult decision to make. Excellent, bargain priced in-state Big U where she has no interest in going, or expensive private and expensive OOS public where she really desires to go. Sigh…

Hi, I haven’t posted here in awhile - like some of you I’ve been following along / posting on the other 2014. This the the board that I got most of my advice from - thank you all. I am very appreciative of all the advice I have received over the last year. My S like others on this board has a discrepancy between test scores and grades so it was hard to determine matches. He applied to 11 and so far has heard from 9 - 6 yes, 1- WL and 1 redirected .
We are still waiting on on super reach and one 50/50.
We are are having the same FA issues - Brandeis is the highest rank in the bunch but there are two issues - his acceptance is for mid yr. and the cost. Brandeis will cost about 14k/ yr more than Mulhenberg and about 10k /yr more than Wheaton. He was also invited to join the honors college at UVM - something S is very interested in but at this point UVM is as expensive as Brandeis. S wants to know what all his options are before making any decision…we are close. He is not expecting to get into the super reach school so we are only waiting on UROC and should here by Monday. If S really wants Brandeis or UVM - I will call the school and try to get more FA. It can’t hurt …

Congratulations on all of the acceptances! I think today or maybe tomorrow is the last day for most colleges, and I’m just relieved all of this is over.

My daughter’s total tally is four acceptances, five rejections. I think the Scripps rejection hit her the hardest, she really was a good fit for the school and showed a lot of interest, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t meant to be.
She got into SDSU, and we attended the Harambee student admit weekend, but she was totally turned off by the school for a number of reasons, but especially the fact that it is less than 25 miles from home. She claims it will be just like attending grade 13 of high school, and she’s adamant about not going. Nothing we can say will change her mind.

Her first choice school, Howard University, is out because they offered zero merit aid, and we just don’t want to spend 50k plus travel expenses to send her. It’s unfortunate, but when you have two schools on the table who are being so generous with tuition breaks, it’s hard to justify the extra expense.
Next week, we will make the 8-15 hour drive to visit Mills and Willamette, and we are really hoping that she will take to one of those schools. But for now, she is a little depressed and spending a lot of time in her room stewing. I think she’ll be okay.

It’s interesting, this whole ‘going away’ thing. Back in the dark ages, when I went to college in that far off land of the Great White North, the norm was to live at home and take the subway to the local public college. Indeed, that was the model followed by most of my (top 10%, overachieving) schoolmates in Toronto. And a similar model was followed by my peers in Canada’s larger cities. Convenient, affordable education - what wasn’t to like?

@englishlit… my kids were all the same way about refusing to attend( or even apply for that matter) to SDSU. We live about 1/2 hour away too, and they were pretty adamant. Thankfully it all worked out. My DS’12 was pretty similar to your S @onlyonemom… with pretty similar results ( he was also admitted to UVM and the honors college), but he had his heart set on a small LAC, so decided against it. It was pretty much out in my mind as well, thanks to the non-existent FA. But, I LOVED UVM, and could of stayed forever on that campus and cool college town. Such a beautiful college! My S ended at a school he had never even set foot on before he was accepted. I made him apply because I felt it was simialr to the other schools on his list and had everything he wanted. He is so deliriously happy there that it’s crazy that we wasted even a second being sad about his rejections to his top choices.

5boys - he was going to apply to St Lawrence but it was one to many essays -we even had his test scores sent but he is happy with his 6 acceptances…

I am happy to report that UVM came through will FA - it brings the cost close to Wheaton . S is very happy but wants to revisit each school ( it will be the first time for Muhlenberg) before deciding. I think he is leaning towards UVM. I am glad we are done waiting for notices!

We are narrowing if down even before he visits- UVM honors college and Mulhenberg! Very happy for him!

Very exciting @onlyonemom… I can remember when my S narrowed it down to 2 as well. One was in WA( U of Puget Sound), that I was absolutely convinced he would pick. He is huge into the outdoors, and couldn’t see how he could turn down a school where Mt Rainer is the backdrop. Also, my parents live about 20 minutes from UPS, and it was only a 2 hour flight away. Boy was I surprised when he decided to send in his deposit to the school 3000 MILES away… sigh. I think the admitted visits are good. Is your S spending the night? That was the real deal maker for my S. He had the time of his life at St Lawrence… UPS not so much:(…

I’ve heard nothing but great things about Muhlenberg, in fact DS’14 was going to apply before he got into Kenyon ED. It should be interesting to see where your S decides, as UVM and Muhlenberg seem different in a lot of ways.

5boys- my S does not want to spend the night but does want to sit in on a couple of classes …S pointed out today - a compliment I think- that if I had not suggested UVM or Mulhenberg - he would never had applied and now they are his final two…made my day!

Same with my S… I made him apply to St Lawrence and he thanked me afterwards too:) Us moms know best!

@onlyonemon: FWIW DS attended an environmental chemistry camp at Muhlenburg last summer and got to work in the labs with the profs. He thought they were great. Dorms were very nice and cafeteria was great. If the’d have had an engineering program he probably would have applied with it as his #1.

@onlyonemom…that’s great to be close to a decision with two great choices!

We’re in a bit of an interesting situation here. D has been fascinated with attending school in the PNW. However, based an acceptances, costs, and lack of adequate merit $, the PNW plan is probably out.

Of the 8 schools that she got into, two of her best choices are in the Midwest where she was previously adamant about not wanting to go; she liked the programs and added these two at the last minute. She got a pretty quick acceptance from College #1 about 8 weeks after applying RD, they gave her a nice scholarship, threw her an additional $2K of grant aid in her package, and now have offered her a $2K grant for an independent project the summer after her freshman year. College #2 offered a similar scholarship to College #1, and her admissions rep called to offer $$ to fly her out to visit. We’re paying our first visit to both schools over break.

Now the challenge is trying to get her to move past her dream of attending school in an exciting city to realistically look at her choices. As I told her, kids dream of attending Yale, not necessarily living in New Haven. Location is not as important as the college and what it offers. The PNW will still be there for grad school or whatever.

I would appreciate any words of wisdom to help her move forward. Sorry for the long post!

Ahhhh LIsa K…if only I could get my D to attend a school in the PNW! She is determined to leave the PNW and go to the Midwest or NY, but the bargain cost of in-state tuition at our state flagship may be too tempting for the family budget to resist. Our D does not plan to on to grad school immediately after UG. She will probably be in sales, so it really isn’t necessary. Yesterday the mountains in Seattle were breathtaking. Fresh snow blanketing the peaks and sun shining on them made for magical views. Even after 25 years here, I never get tired of the geographic wonder of our area! Best of luck with her choices.

Thanks @ momofwon…she’ll get there someday, I’m sure. It’s challenging to get these kids to be open to ideas other than their own. Hopefully visits will sort it all out…

LisaK216 - I have no words of wisdom. I would just ask her to check out the schools and keep an open mind. I had to practically drag S to the Feb open house at UVM- It wasn’t that he wasn’t interested in UVM -he just didn’t feel like going to see it. He might have been still hoping for Colby but after the visit - he was no longer interested in Colby! He realized that UVM had a lot to offer especially research. He is really keeping an open mind about Mulhenberg - another college that has good Neuro research opportunities.

Maybe once she see the schools - she will change her mind- plus she could go overseas for a semester and maybe do some exciting summer internships…just a thought.

Hi All
Checking in only the second time since they changed this whole format…Have been a CC member since like 2008 so I guess I am glad to be about “done”. As for K2…got into all 7 schools. So I guess the bottom line is cast a wide net. K2 got into the first choice school EA as well as the other 5. Then one school deferred and then accepted. So a happy kiddo for sure. All of that worry–and it all worked out. Best of luck to you all.

My DD has committed to Roanoke College. We’ve been there three times and she just loves the school and staff. Everyone has been super nice and have gone out of their way to help. She has really bonded with her Admissions Counselor and that was the clincher for her. Our financial situation has changed in 2014 so I contacted the FA office with the updated information and they were able to add another $3K merit to her package. She met her potential roommate on a previous trip to Roanoke, but the roommate has not 100% decided on Roanoke…crossing fingers since they both seem like a good fit for each other. We are scheduled to go down on June 9th for orientation and class selection. Best of luck to everyone else here on their decisions and FA packages!!!

Tears of joy (and a bit of sadness) that the decision is made! It’ll be Syracuse Orange Nation at our house for the next four years. D is so excited…but we’re not sure if it’s because she’ll be going to her #1 choice all along, or that she can start planning her dorm decorating ;-). Tonight we’ll attend the SU accepted student reception in our town and hopefully D can meet some future class of 2018 students.

Time to stock up on REI winter gear now! Good thing this fashionista is into boots. She’s going to need them in Syracuse.

Thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement. It’s been quite the adventure and we’re officially one and done.

Congrats to everyone on the wonderful acceptance and decisions. I know it was a very difficult one at our house, passing up a fabulous Big U flagship 10 miles from our house for a private school 1/2 the size 3,000 miles away.

Cheers!

i have been following this thread for a long time and can’t really say what my child’s unweighted gpa is (they only report weighted and i never figured the other one out). it is a great way to hear about colleges that were previously unknown to me, so thanks! still deciding on a major at our house which dictates which of 7 choices will be the final choice but it’s nice to have options thanks to what we learned here. expatCanuck, you crack me up…only a few of our public colleges even have a subway in reach… the thought of taking a subway ride to the University of Florida or Penn State makes me laugh, but yes it would be likeable, definitely.
