Parents of the HS class of 2014 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Welcome, @thingamajig – nobody checks the gpa’s here, so don’t worry. My S was a bit higher than 3.3 end of junior year (3.5) but I expect that this year it will fall squarely to the 3.0-3.3 range. What was important to me was the same as you – to get some leads on solid colleges that were not lottery schools where everybody has 4.0 and perfect scores and still can’t get in. Good luck on your decision!

Congrats on the Syracuse decision, @momofwon – now that my S has decided on RIT we should order the snow boots in bulk to get discounts. He even says he’ll have to try long johns.

@lisak216 Several of my friends from the midwest or who went to grad school with me in the midwest are now in Portland or Seattle. There’s a vibe in some midwestern college towns not unlike that in PNW. For example, excellent brewpubs and coffee, and outdoorsy opportunities. Good luck.

@Englishlit My D is just finishing up her first year at Mills and has had a very good experience there so far. If you have any questions for a parent after your visit, feel free to PM me.

Crowlady–you’re not kidding about the winter snow apparel. D is going to be in for a real shock coming from the temperate NW, but she’s adaptable and excited about the change in scenery/temperature/climate, etc.

An observer seldom weighing in but we are close now to a decision so here I am. S applied to 12, accepted to 10, waitlisted at 2. Merit aid at 7. S accepted to first choice Syracuse but was we tossed out because there was no merit aid and coming in at 57K it was too $$. We are delighted to have our S have “skin in the game” with some small loans BUT the gap was too big. We thought the same would be the case with his other favorite, Loyola of MD. It was the last packet to arrive and to our surprise came in with substantial scholarship so it’s still being considered. S came up with two other schools USCarolina and OSU. USC is BIG but OSU is HUGE. We like USC a lot, nice package, rankings are good but not amazing. S is interested in finance and the B school is 38. OSU is 18 though but massive. I’d say we are down to those three OSU, USC and Loyola of MD. Hope to get to OSU this weekend but found out the Loyola accepted day is this weekend. OSU is an accepted student visit. The OSU thing is not the big accepted student event so it will be smaller. I am wondering if we should just go to the Loyola thing and put of OSU a couple more weeks…we can visit again on 4/21. I know that is cutting it close but what can we do?

I have not been on line here in a very long time because I was depressed my daughter had not heard from her number one choice. Well today she finally got the big envelope, she got into the University of Minnesota. She ended up five for five and I really appreciate all the advise I have gotten here.

Final results:

University of Minnesota
University of Wisconsin-Madison (a real surprise)
University of Iowa
University of Tampa
University of St.Thomas (St.Paul,Mn)

WOW! Newfaith, congrats on the acceptances!!! Lots of kids I know didn’t get into UW Madison, including mine (no surprise there, however)! What a long wait…but such happy news! She must be very relieved.

We are happy for her but because of the long wait she changed her mind on what she wanted in college and decided to go to the University of St.Thomas. For me its hard to pass on some of the more well known schools but she feels she’ll do better at a smaller school. Due to merit aide the cost of attendance is about the same for U of Wisconsin, U of MN and U of St.Thomas so its her decision.

Congratulations, @newfaith‌! Thanks for coming back to share your good news :)

So it has been awfully quiet on this thread! Who still is deciding? How about it, @newfaith or @expatCanuck or @5boys or @lisaK216 ? I’ve been cleaning up the Google doc at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZxUwgbCqcCpq4L_2L4lAhqcKQAN0AyGHDAjf1rDX9rI/edit</a> and would be happy to update with the final choices. I am finding the diversity of acceptances and final decisions fascinating.

Also starting to think about schools for my S16 who is a very different student.

My dd going to Rochester Institute of Technology, with the help of a bolstered financial aid package on appeal. Happy kid, happy mom that we are DONE!

@crowlady… Thanks so much for updating everything. My DS 12 was the S who fit in this range, but I aways liked this thread and felt I could offer a lot of info because of all the schools we looked at. My DS14 got in Kenyon ED. He had around a 3.5 GPA so it was still a huge reach! Lesson learned…never give up on a school if you are a good fit and have an applicationn that shows passion and tells a story about yourself.

I have been posting on the other thread…My S has decided on UVM HONORS COLLEGE -a good fit for him - he is very happy. I just hope he is able to maintain the GPA to stay in Honors and keep his scholarship.

I’ve updated the Google doc for you, @5boys and @onlyonemom. A friend’s daughter just visited Kenyon (she’s a junior now) and they thought it looks great! .

I posted on the other thread but I wanted to circle back here as well. S had 3.23 (UW) at small private high school at the end of junior year. Applied and accepted to U Pitt, UVM, UMass, and Colgate ED. Once he got in to Colgate he pulled his U Rochester app and didn’t have to do the others he was planning on. He went all out senior year with 4 APs and had really strong essays and recs which helped a lot (IMO). Congrats to all making decisions come May 1!

Awesome choices everyone. As the OP who started this thread 13 months ago, it’s hard to believe final decisions are due in a week! D was so excited to wear her new future school sweatshirt to school today. Thinking ahead, we shopped at REI this past weekend to pick up a real winter coat and winter/rain boots at end-of-season prices. Now…she just needs a laptop, linens, dorm accessories…the list goes on and on.

We’re within 60 days of graduation (6/16) and D has a packed schedule with tournaments, AP tests, prom, graduation open house, senior party, etc. I’m sure it’s going to go by in a flash. Will try to cherish every minute because it’s going to be so quiet come late August. Life’s a journey and I’m excited to see where it’ll take all of us next.

Cheers!

@crowlady – expatSon has yet to decide. Dal or SMCM. Stay tuned.

D is close to a decision, too…will let you know when we know!

My daughter had a 3.48, so she fits in this range

She was accepted to
Rose Hulamn
Syracuse
Florida state university
Florida polytechnic university - Florida’s newest university

Rose Hulamn gave her $17k a year, but she decided that she didn’t want to go there
Syracuse gave her $8k - she really wanted to be there but out of our price range
FSU, she has flordia prepaid & bright futures along with 27 dual enrollment credits so that is where she is going

As for Florida ploy tech, it’s not accredited so no

Congrats, @katvis! Sounds like a pretty straightforward decision.

O@katvis - awesome news!
@oldmom4896‌ - great to hear about RIT and additional aid!
@crowlady - thank you for updating the acceptance list for me!
Congratulations to everyone…wishing everyone who hasn’t decided a happy landing over the next week!

Cold and Windy in Maine today!
