Parents of the HS class of 2015 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Ugh yeah I can imagine-my daughter only kicks into full gear when absolutely necessary-so your girl got hurt playing club soccer spring of sophomore year then? If I am understanding the time line my daughter was hurt playing a HS game in October of Junior year and was cleared to play in January.

I know her GC will explain the drop in grades will yours? It really hurts for things like scholarships which may have been lost-we will never know though will we?

The thing is I know a girl who got two very quickly-one from dancing and then one in gym-this girl is still a mess and it’s been just horrible but there really is no predicting where they may get hurt-although the risk is much greater playing soccer. We head off tomorrow for a tournament and this will be her last club game ever-the coach is pressuring her to come back next year but she is done and I am going to make sure he backs off and hope we have a nice weekend with no injuries! I then have to hope she gets through the HS season which starts like next week with Captains Practice and summer league and will end around mid-October. I have a knot in my stomach every time she in on that field which is basically every minute as she is a center-back. I think I need therapy I wish she would just not play but I can’t make her stop she would never forgive me-she wants to be a Captain and four year Varsity player-funny thing is she doesn’t even like playing anymore. Sorry this is therapeutic for me I guess and I know you understand.

We all have our issues we need to get through right? This also affects her academics so I guess it is not totally off topic.

We have the ACT saturday as well. No chance they will do any review of any sort before then. They had a semester long test prep course that just ended last week. They are burned out. While I appreciate the messages and help, my sons are best served relaxing right now and going in fresh. The test prep did nothing to help them, unfortunately. They got 24 and 25 in February, then 24 and 24 in April. Though the one son who stayed the same at 24 actually went up from 23.5 to 24.25. The son who went down was shocked, and said the techniques he applied from the test prep course made him worse off. So they will just go do their best Saturday.

The son who has a 25 as his best really just needs a 26 to save us some money with merit aid at Bowling Green. He’s already done enough to get into the school. The son with two 24s will be borderline at his school of choice - so we are just hoping he can get one more point to give him a little extra shot. But he should be fine, in general.

We are at the point where we are done looking at schools, I think. The Bowling Green kid will likely not even apply anywhere else. The other son will likely apply to 4 schools, but we already know which ones - First choice 50/50 shot at admission. 2nd choice is probably 70/30 shot. 3rd is a safety and 4th is a last resort.

Good luck to all your kids Saturday!

I’ve been in the 2015 group and ventured over to check this one out as well. We’ve got the ACT Saturday as well. My D has taken it 3 times with the same scores and even the same score on two practice tests. We took a month off from all prep classes, got through finals and end of school, finished up spring sports season, and she took another practice test this past week and scored 4 points higher! Hoping Saturday is positive for her with less stress.

@jennie hello, D practice sections have not change so I hoping just to maintain.
I think Saturday will be a different testing experience for most because school is out.
Fingers, toes and good thoughts to all!!!

The talk of concussions makes me worry for my S18, a soccer player. The play at this age gets more intense. My D is a swimmer so once she learned to dive properly and I could rest easier that she wouldn’t hit the pool bottom, there hasn’t been much to worry about with her sport.

Gosh you all move quickly but now that school is over hopefully I can keep up . D15 took Latin and USH SAT2 tests last week, and will take the ACT for the second time on Saturday. Her composite is already good enough for all schools she is applying to, but as an aspiring CS major she does not want her math to be her lowest so she is taking one final run at it and then she will be done with tests. Our list currently sits at around 20 schools, She wants to major in CS and Classics, so we will take a look at the specific programs to narrow the list to hopefully around 15. She needs merit to afford all but two of her schools, so test scores are likely to matter quite a bit. I have enjoyed catching up with you all, such a wide vairety of kids and families on this thread!

Semester grades are in and she did great. Now maybe she will look at the red book tonight…a mom can dream, right?

Good luck to tomorrow’s exam takers!

My son is also taking the ACT for the second time. He already has a high enough score to be pretty comfortable about getting into his choice of schools ( plus he is an athlete that always helps) but 2 more points puts him into academic scholarship range. Sure would be nice because his sport doesn’t give much money to guys.

Good Morning and wishing HAPPY RESULTS today!!!

Good luck to everyone taking the ACT today!

Boys said it went pretty well and that the science was easier than last time. They also both said there were a lot of “C” answers in the math section (however that is easily their worst subject, so not sure what to think about that). Hopefully the scores will post earlier in the period instead of later like what happened with April. Good luck everybody!

I’m not sure how D did. She didn’t look particularly confident when I picked her and her boyfriend up. It really didn’t help when he said it was easy. We’ll see in a few weeks.

I hope everyone gets the score they want/need!

It wasn’t much better on this end. She thought that English was way harder and usually the easy part for her math, she said it was more like a reading test with math versus the other way around. No matter what she scores she officially done with testing.
Let the chips lay where the fall…,.

Yes, let the chips fall. My one son did say that the reading section was longer - where he had a harder time finishing that section this time. For both of my kids, they will score in the upper 20s in the reading and english sections, around 20 (I know) in the math, and the science is a wild card and all over the board. Since they felt that was easier, my hope is they scored higher on the science and kept the others about the same. That may bump them each up a point, which is all I’m hoping for.

Hello everyone! Been lurking for awhile, just recently started posting on the other 2015 thread due to D15’s stats, but noticed that @kmanshouse has a child looking at some of the same schools we did/are. D is interested in Wildlife Biology/Zoo so we also visited UW-Stevens Point (didn’t like, off the list), SIU (wasn’t that thrilled but still on the list for a stat and financial safety), Murray State (loved!), SE Missouri State (she liked the program, but I think would be much too out of place so it’s off the list), Truman State (hated, off the list), Iowa State (liked). Our summer/final tours will include Ball State, Miami Ohio-Oxford and Ohio University. I don’t mind seeing Ball and Ohio during the summer, but I would have really liked to see Miami during the school year since I’ve heard about it’s significant Greek presence and the “preppy” feel. Any thoughts on this?

I’ll reply on Maimi of Ohio gorgeous campus D not interested " it’s like ****HS on steriod." She goes to a private prep school. She is looking for a large Univ… My sophomore S loved it but they are definitely different birds who co habitat in this household
Our school sent 5 to Maimi of Ohio this year and they took advantage of the merit money.

ILMom13579

My brother is a wildlife biology grad from Iowa State. He loved the program. Faculty work closely with undergrads, brother participated in many different research projects. College of Ag at ISU is great at working with their students and getting them involved on and off campus.

My son will be in his 2nd year at Iowa State, not in wildlife biology. He had a fantastic first year, loves the school, and can’t wait to get back.

@Hoosier96 - thanks for the info on Miami - I have actually heard that before about it being HS on steroids, hence my “preppy” comment. The last 3 tours are medium/large schools so hopefully she has enough information to take with her into app season. These 3 are also the most expensive on our list so money will definitely need to do lots of talking for us to even consider them come decision time.

@Haystack, thanks for the Iowa State feedback. I have heard so many great things about that school it is hard not to love it. When we first started this process D said she wanted a medium sized school. I was through this once before with S13 so I made sure to visit schools of all sizes - Iowa was the last one we visited over spring break and she was actually OK with the size. It is the biggest college she will be applying to. Although it was a Sat. when we visited, every thing was well organized, the campus was beautiful, at least for that time of year, and everyone was so helpful and friendly.

She is a bit of an introvert so I’m hoping that if she gets in and wants to go that she enjoys and has the same experiences your son is having. Having out of classroom experience, study abroad opportunities and faculty mentoring are critical to getting a job with this major so your brother’s experience is helpful. I think the school could do wonders for her and I hope she feels the same way.

@ILMom13579 - you really did see a lot of schools that we have considered. I am really glad she liked Murray State. We liked it as well - it just doesn’t quite hit all the boxes. It’s a decent school, nice compact campus. We talked with the head of the Wildlife Bio department there who had awesome stories of studying whales, etc. But he was straight wildlife bio (our son later decided on wildlife LE) - told us it would take a Masters minimum, probably PhD to maintain gainful employment. He was a phenomenal guy. But he revealed at the end of our meeting he was retiring (this was last year, so maybe he’s gone now).

Steven’s Point has an ugly campus but the Nat. Res. college is pretty much unparalleled and matches my son’s wishes as far as studies, exactly. It’s his first choice with Mississippi State being 2nd.

Interesting about Truman - I think it may be a bit rigorous for my kids, but now I’m glad we didn’t visit. I went to U of Iowa so having a kid go to Iowa State is sacrilegious for me. LOL
