Parents of the HS class of 2015 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Welcome back, conmama. We are in the deep knee of applications. We are able to acquire transcripts through naviance and send testing scores through ACT. We will not do the send the applications that need recommendations until we are back in school.

We have submitted apps that are online and pretty much just number focus; gpa and test scores. They also are rolling so the turn around should be quicker on the answer of acceptance.

Hope everyone summer is going great because in less than 3 weeks the common app goes live!!!

Thanks Hoosier. Sounds like the $1/app from our HS must just be a moneymaker. We also sign up from Naviance, so I don’t know why we have to have the H.S. send their transcripts. Crazy.

If it makes you feel better, D’s school charges $2/transcript. It doesn’t matter if the transcript is submitted via the common app or the mail.

I rather pay for transcripts then the un-godly tuition  I pay for my kids. We moved to this area for the schools and have only been able to use them for 2 years. It was enough to know that it we were in for a long commute to private schools…

Cross posting from main 2015 thread:

BHG’s Common Application essay is done, including revisions–Yes! She’s emailing schools asking for supplemental essay prompts, as we’re still waiting for them to show up on the Essay Organizer site. We’ll not pay the $49 fee until the site provides the prompts.

Interviews are fast approaching, though–sigh.

Here’s a link to an older paper CA form to use for most of the basic CA questions on personal information, parent’s education, demographics, HS information, and stats information. Once filled out, the student can then type the information into the online CA. http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/pdf/common-application.pdf

NB: Essay # 6 no longer exists, do NOT allow your student to write an essay on topic of choice.

Here are links & information to the instructions to last year’s CA, which did not change for this year’s class, Read through the PDF with your child, and keep for reference.

We have completed the school up North
(Canada) D will apply to 3. Easy application process gpa; scores and classes taken.
D met with Kent; BGSU; will apply to both. BGSU FYI is changing its scholarship program? Admission didn’t know what the change would be and what would happen to current stats. requirements.

My son and I went to Decision Day at IUP (Indian University of Pennsylvania) yesterday. Due to PA Turnpike construction, several rainstorms enroute, and difficulty finding the parking garage and then the admissions office due to construction on campus, we ended up getting to the information session a half hour late (when it was almost over). We turned in his transcript, went on the one hour tour, and returned to the admissions office, where he was given an envelope with the admission acceptance. Since the application, submitted last week, took all of about 5 minutes to complete, this ranks up there with the lowest stress college application processes. Of course, now my son doesn’t want to apply anywhere else. I’m trying to encourage him to apply to a few more schools, so that he’ll have a choice next May 1, but at this point he doesn’t want to be bothered. If it requires essays or prepping for a retake of the SAT, I doubt that I can convince him that it’s worth it. His primary criteria for a school seems to be whether it has a good gym (fitness center)!

^Indiana (not Indian)

@kidzncatz: All of our parental journey’s should have that great of an ending, especially given the fiasco of attempting to arrive on campus.

A hearty congratulations to you ans your son.

IUP is known to me as my brother and his family reside in Chester County, PA.

@Threesdad‌ Thanks. I’m just happy that IUP has a good program in nursing (my son’s major, or so he thinks at this point) as well as a well-equipped fitness center.

@Hoosier96 - you are scaring me with your BGSU comment. I have to check that out. My son has decided to go there.

Hmmm, just checked, and for where my son is at the reward amounts haven’t changed when I use their calculator.

Kmanshouse we were at BGSU on Monday and the admission person while give her talk stated this…she said they were in the process about maybe upping the awards? But did not no about what or if the stats would change.
D is applying and will apply to the honors so hopefully nothing finically it would have change to much [-O<

Could be maybe just for honors/higher levels. 3.0/20 gets 1/2 the OOS tuition off. 3.04/26 or 3.2/25 gets another $4,000. That’s what we are hoping for, but my son is at 3.13/25 right now.

Kmanshouse I hope it in both of our favor per website under calculator:

“Scholarship calculations and dollar amounts subject to change for fall 2015 and beyond.”

She made it sound that they were increasing the awards?. It would happen within the next two weeks.

Ok gang common app goes live TOMORROW!!!
It’s official our kids are now in the race…no more practicing or warm-ups it’s time for the game to begin.
My wish will be that all who participate will MEDAL!!!

Good luck to all opening the Common App tomorrow! We will be waiting until closer to Sept as D’s GC isn’t available until school starts so we can’t send transcripts or LORs. She can get started on the essay though which I’m recommending to her that she do.

We have a final list:

Murray State
Missouri State
Iowa State
Ball State
Miami U-OH
Illinois State (she’s doing this app begrudgingly - it’s instate so a financial safety)

I believe I have convinced her to take the ACT one more time as she would be eligible for an increase in merit scholarships at 2+ of these schools if she adds one more point to her score. $50.00 for an additional $2000-5000/year? Totally worth it if she can do it.

Totally agree @ILMom13579 on the ACT attempt. Good luck.

Unless there are scholarships involved at Illinois State, it’s really no cheaper than Murray State, Ball State or Missouri State though, right? Ball State is in the MSEP.

Yes, base prices of most of the schools we are looking at are about the same, @kmanshouse. I added Illinois State in the hopes we might actually qualify and receive some instate grant monies. I fill my FAFSA out as close to the beginning of February as possible to maximize the possibilities. Missouri State might actually be the cheapest of them all though, even beating Murray. But who knows at this point - the net price calculators don’t do me a lot of good as I’m a single mom business owner and will have 2 kids in college. It’s such a crap-shoot…I’m going to just wait until April and we will get out our handy-dandy spreadsheet and see just who really shows us the $$love$$!

OK, well that stinks - apparently you can’t stack a merit scholarship with MSEP at Ball State. You are given the higher of the two awards. In addition, “receipt of other tuition specific scholarships may impact the amount of the award”. So Ball State is classifying MSEP as a scholarship and not a “tuition assistance program” like it was intended to be - am I wrong?
