Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Thank you mihcal1.We have to sit down and plan out.I will update you later on this one.

Thank you mihcal and tripleamom. I checked ap discussions on cc. very helpful!

D’s homecoming is in 2 wks. She is invited by a guy!! :D

Maxwell- Whoo Hoa! That is a big deal for freshmen girls! Hope you have " the dress" !

D had a great time on Sat at her dance. She went with a group of girls. My older D did the same her freshman year.

We met some of her new friend’s parents. Wow, we are the old parents! Quite a shock for my H, he thought one of the " moms" was the big sister. lol

D. is still debating if she’ll do the dance, in 2 weeks. If she does, she’ll be with a friend of hers, a girl.

Hi all! I have a DD freshman in high school. She has an older sister who is in college class 2013 in Florida (loves it!). DD Freshman joined us on college tours way back in 2007/2008 with her older sister. She already has an idea what college she wants to apply for. I told her we need to tour colleges that cater to HER major, not based on what we saw with her sister. Right now, she wants to major in Photography. We know a graduate from an arts school in Philadelphia who his first year went to UMass for Photography but said that it was a waste of time and he should’ve went to Arts school instead of a regular 4-year college. I told DD freshman this but she wants to attend a traditional 4-year college, preferably in Florida like her sister.

We’ll see if she decides to change her major within the next year or two before we seriously start touring.

~~Waving to everyone ~~ Sorry I haven’t posted in a long time. School is super busy and we have an exchange student from Italy this year.

Jerseyshoremom: What a conincidence, my D is also considering Photography. I don’t hear that very often. Interesting that another girl said 4-yr college was a waste & should’ve gone to an Arts school. I had a lady tell me she’d been to the Arts college & should’ve gone to a 4 yr. Now I’m even more confused. I also heard that a BA was better than a BFA. (I don’t know what a BFA is)

Arts school question: Are all the classes specific to your major…or do you still have English, Science, etc ?! (Sorry, never looked at anything but a traditional college…)

Hope everyone’s Freshman year of HS is going well !

D’s marching band did their first performance in the varsity football game. It was wonderful. Everyone enjoyed it greatly. The band still have room to improve needless to say.

D15 had her first Debate competition on saturday.Went very well. Her team was not place. But she thinks they won in 3 out of 4.Not bad for their first time. She loves it and looks forward for the next one.She did the parlimentary debate.

And we got the books for the Ap Euro. Now the big task lies ahead,to prepare for the exam.Any ideas on how to self study for the exam?We have the text book,REA crash course and Princeton review AP Euro.

Please suggest some good resources for BIO SAT Biology Subject Test…

Hi I just joined and wanted to introduce myself. I have a daughter graduating in 2015. She’s a good student, but not “gifted” (although she did qualify for CTY and spent 3 weeks in Lancaster this summer). She is also very focused and ambitious when it comes to preparing for college. Right now she is interested in a biology major (preparing for a MPH and PHD in epidemiology). She is in all honors courses and is taking her first AP course this year as a Freshman. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all.

I would not self study anything for an exam as a freshman. Unless kids are in a pretty laid back school - things tend to get more overwhelming as the year progresses.

Decided against participation in a talent search, D will write PSAT in a couple of weeks - this will be enough.
Accepted in to the State Youth Symphony!

Welcome Elliemom!

Congrats Kelowna on the State Youth symphony- that’s fanatastic news!

tripleamom- my elder D was a policy debater, started as a freshman in hs and is continuing to debate in college. She loves it!

D2 is settling in to HS. We will be glad when this week is over. D2 is a softball player and this week is regional playoffs. Games the last 2 nights and 2 games this evening. Hard for the younger players to balance homework and playing. I am proud to report she has managed to keep all A’s in her classes ( scarping by in Math). I have been promising her for weeks that once the hs softball season is over , the rest of the semester will be soooo easy. She was thrilled to have made the varsity team, but the JV season is so much less demanding. Bonus is she will be ordering her letterman jacket soon.

Yes it’s great news Kelowna. Congrats to your daughter! Which instrument does she play?

My d. tried all state band twice, didn’t get in. she’ll try again in a month. I predict again she won’t be chosen. She plays several instruments. She always goes to all state with the clarinet. There are something like 200 excellent clarinet players trying out, and the band selects a handful. Oh well, anyway it’s fun. If she tries out with her oboe, she may have better chance - she still needs to be good though. Right now her oboe skill is no where near her clarinet skill.

She plays violin and piano - in the symphony it is violin of course :-)

For the winter concert they are working on Tchaikovsky Symphony no.1 Op 13.

Here is the movement she is learning right now.
<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

To my daughter all pieces by Tchaikovsky sound like Nutcracker ;-)

@Kelowna, Congratulations! All State orchestra and band are very competitive.

LOL!

I am so impressed reading about all these accomplished young people! Congrats to you all.

I am afraid, though, that my daughter is feeling overwhelmed after reading CC boards for the past coupe of weeks. She’s feeling decidedly below par in comparison to the many talented and ambitious students she’s reading about here. Her high school courses are harder than she had expected (especially the one AP course she is taking) and her ECs are more demanding than they had been before coming to high school. Any advice about how to keep her on track without burning out would be much appreciated!

I do have an older son, but he was all about sports and happy with the B’s he got with little or no studying. And his experience just makes it worse for my daughter. He was very good at one thing—football, and that opened lots of doors for him. My daughter, on the other hand, works much harder and gets good grades but she doesn’t have the inherent, and sought-after, talent that he had. It does seem to be a shame that he got accepted at Brown because he could knock people over (he chose not to go there) but my daughter who would sell her soul for a Brown acceptance letter probably doesn’t have the proverbial snowball’s chance to get in.

I’d just like to keep her happy and encouraged over the next few years!

Do not let her come here and read CC posts !

Congrats KelownaD!

Around here they won’t let 9th graders go to All-State. Even if you win at the district level, you can’t go as a freshman.

D’15 is finding the HS homework is putting more time pressure on her practicing than she’d like. (She’s also a violin.) I think she’ll figure it all out soon, though. We’re almost at the end of the first quarter! Wow!

HS work certainly limited D’s practicing (music) time at home. In fact, it’s the band activities. Two days ago she had a french club after school, piano lesson, then had about 30 min. for dinner at the golden arches, ran to a band practice at 6, lasted until after 9. Came back home around 9:30 and had a big AP gov project due the next day, so she worked until midnight! This is insane.

We just found out in her HS, AP biology and AP chemistry take double period. That means she can’t do band next year if she wants to take AP chemistry. In a way I feel relieved.

I’m curious - do AP science courses take double-period in your schools?
