Parents of the HS Class of 2015

Gibson - I am glad your D is feeling better.
Thanks for the advice, I will help her word the email to him

welshpixie-
It is a good thing that your DD wants to talk to the teacher on her own. Maybe she can ask him what his expectation is and what she can do to improve. I would recommend that she approaches him in person instead of writing email. A good practice for a shy kid. It is my impression at my kids’ HS school that teachers prefer students go to them in person for questions, etc.

There were a few teachers who described S1 quiet, reserved, sweet, or serious but I never received negative reports that he needed to talk more or was too quiet in class. I believe S1 will speak out for himself when it is needed or when he feels comfortable. I would think a good teacher knows not every student is very verbal in class and there are students are just quiet by nature.
With S2 he is at ease talking to adults and is more verbal so teachers notice him more.

sunnydayfun - Thanks for that, just spoken to DD and she is going to try to speak to him this week.

Hi Gibson sorry about your D.Happy to hear that the surgery went well.Hope things go well and she won’t be needing more. Our prayers for her.

welshpixie,it is really good that she is taking initiative on her own.Hope things work out with her teacher.

Had a meeting with school counselor.Economy is having an effect on everything, even taking classes in the community college.D’s progress reports came in has all A’s and A+ in Eng. and Chinese. So far everything is good, she has to maintain this through out the year.

D’s marching band is almost over. Now it’s getting quiet.

Her school’s physics teacher is trying to convince her to take AP physics (B) next year. The reason is, since her school is small, and most students don’t have high academic expectations, AP physics class very rarely open, because of low enrollment. The teacher said he knew next year there would be enough interest to have an AP physics class. They go in waves. Most likely the year after, or even her senior year, there won’t be AP physics offered in school. She can still take it online, but that’s not what she’d prefer.
D. is strong in math, but never had physics before. She is taking algebra II with ease. (over 100%, always, because sometimes they have extra challenge problems.) Next year she will take trig and precal.

We are thinking about having her do CTY summer fast paced high school physics, so she might be ready for AP physics next year. I remember somebody here has a daughter doing that before even entering HS. D. is concerned that she’ll be stupid in the CTY class if she does end up doing it, because “other people will know some physics but I don’t.”

She took language courses with CTY twice and LOVED both. But she said when they did etymologies and Greek, pretty much everybody started from scratch.

Well, it’s still early to make CTY decisions. But I’d like to hear some feedback about this.

^^^ She should take trigonometry before she starts AP PhysicsB.

I recommend moving up trig/precalc (working with right triangles, sine & cosine) to the summer. She’ll need those skills because vector math (vector vs. scalar addition, resolving vectors into components, dot products, etc.) is a lead-off unit for the AP Physics class, forming a foundational skill-set for everything that comes afterward.

Getting the math skills in place beforehand is more important than taking a preliminary physics class.

Great suggestion, Mihcal. Thank you. Yes it makes perfect sense to know trig stuff before working with vectors. Thank you thank you!

In fact, I think I’ll do some trig with D. in case she has desire to do physics with CTY in the summer and AP in the fall. What trig textbook does your school use? I may get an used one to work with her.

Well my daughter survived the first quarter academically and athletically! She is tired and looking forward to having a little break after a very long and demanding season. She isn’t going to play the sport she used to play all winter and instead will focus on sharpening her soccer skills with the indoor season-which will be nothing like the time she has spent on this HS sport-kids do sports three seasons and that is great but no way she could-at least this year.

Very good report card-the only fly in the ointment is the English-not her strongest subject but made even harder by the teacher-I cannot wait for conferences this week. :)

My daughter just got the phone call from her band director - she is in All State Band! She did the audition two weeks ago, got into the finals room. She said she didn’t do too well in the final’s room. But she made it! We are very happy for her. She is the 12th in 20 clarinets in all state.

2nd quarter in school is off to a rough start though. She had bio quiz and AP gov quiz. didn’t do well in either one.

Well the saga of DD’s English teacher has been resolved. We had a teacher parent meeting this week, we walked in he said “she got another C, I think she should leave my class”. Fortunately one of the other English teachers is only too pleased to take her. It’s funny all her other teachers only had good things to say about her, biggest problem is she quiet, but this one teacher said she had attitude problems and was disruptive. I am not worried just glad she is away from this man!!
His head of department is not happy with him either as he has never spoken to her about moving D, he also never spoke to D about how or where she was going wrong, at least now she can start afresh and be in a class with he friends (that was also another problem, she didn’t know anyone in the class so could even get much feedback from the other kids)
I hope no-one else has these problems, but if you do go in and sort it out don’t let it fester, this could have gone on for 2 years as he will teach the same class for that long.

welshpixie, glad that your problem D’s is solved.Kids are at home for the whole week. But D15 has to volunteer for most days.It is relaxing to have a week off after a busy schedule.

I get so upset when I hear about teachers like this welshpixie.

I am glad you were able to move your daughter but if things were as they should be the teacher would be moved-perhaps replaced?

I learned the hard way what you said-don’t let it fester because it will probably get worse not better.

@welsh, Glad you had the problem solved. Sometimes it’s hard to confront teachers. It sounds like in your case it’s a very good step to take.

@herandhis, CONGRATULATIONS to your D! That’s so exciting! I understand it’s very hard to get in an all-state band/orchestra, especially with an instrument like clarinet - there’re so many competitions. You must be proud of your D. I’ve heard All State band is a great experience and their concerts are at professional level.
When is your state’s concert?

herandhis I missed that-big congrats!

Pepper you need to bring your frying pan over from the college class of 2015 over to this thread for Welshpixie to use on this teacher!

Herandhis - congrats! I hope she enjoys. My elder D played flute, she made district Honor band but never All State, that is amazing especially for Clarinet.

Nose update- D2 got the thumbs up to play softball again and to get back in the pool, though no diving or flip turns for a few more weeks. She played ball last week. I have never seen her so nervous, she was chalk white. She played well, one hesitation on a play but I think she overcame her nerves. Surgeon wants to see her again in 6 months- think we will be facing another surgery next summer : (

D1 is home - she is a college freshman. All enjoying being together.

Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. Just the 4 of us since our family is all overseas.

Wishing all of you americans a happy thanksgiving. (I am a brit)
Final update, D came home yesterday after a lesson with her new teacher and said she absolutely loved it, they were allowed to give their own opinion on the book and the teacher listened. Teacher is american so they are doing something fun for thanksgiving as the teacher has to work:).
Thank you to all of you for your kind words it has made a difficult situation much easier.

herandhismom,Congrats for your D making the all state band. What an honor and experience.
Gibson1514,good to hear that your D is back to the game.Best wishes to her.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Thank you all!
Happy Thanksgiving! We are dog sitting for some friends. The puppy (6 year old, very small) is adorable! Kids are very happy, the cats aren’t. :p

Hello,
My youngest child (son) is class of 2015. He has an older brother and sister. Smart enough, but not particularly academically motivated. His classes this year are Religion, English, Biology, Geometry, World History, PE and Spanish. Not heavy on extra-curriculars either: is in Robotics (twice per week right now, I imagine it kicks in more after Xmas), Board game club and a gaming club (basically video game club)

He’s already talking about going to the same small Cal State his brother attends. I’d be okay with that…we are very happy with the school so far for oldest ds.
