michal – LOL. In high school I single-handedly raised enough money for my model UN to travel by selling expensive candy bars in class. Sugar and teens, a profitable combination.

mihcal1 that is just great! I wish you were closer-Girl Scout cookies are a big favorite of mine. Is there a new kind? I thought I heard someone talking about that a couple of weeks ago.

Pepper03 – The cookies are the same as last year. Same price, too. I’m sure you can find a GS near you. Or else look for booth sales outside the local grocery stores on the weekend.

My D2015 is highly motivated this year, wanting to sell lots of cookies to raise money for her Gold Award project. D2012, who attends the same HS but no longer as involved in GS, is helping out by helping schlepp the cookies to school in the morning, providing extra space in her locker, and telling all her senior friends to buy cookies. I suspect she’s also being #1 best customer.

Yum Yum GS cookies! Good luck to mihcal1’s D!

S2s school released class ranking. Ugh. It is hard to see a kid who has the potential but does not apply himself. S2 thinks he has 7 (5 practically) more semesters to improve on but I dont really think individual ranking changes much from one year to another based on S1s experience.

IJustDrive, you’re right - it’s not worth it unless it’s taken seriously.

Surprisingly though, our science bowl team (my D. didn’t go to the competition. only upperclassmen went) got to the second round. The teacher and students were very much encouraged. Maybe next year more efforts will be put into it so they can do even better.

and we LOVE girlscout cookies! :)

Swim team finished and track has started!

D2 is continuing to work hard in Lit. 3+ hours a night. She has pulled her grade up to an amazing 95.Teacher is known for is tough grading. Only 2 A’s in the class. I hope she can continue this pace and doesn’t burn herself out. 14 weeks to go before the end of semester.

Girl scout cookies haven’t arrived yet in GA. I guess GS stack distribution dates. Ordered some to send to D1 at college.

What are the 15’s doing for summer? D’s coach just released softball schedule for the spring/ summer. Looks like D will be spending a lot of time at the ball park. We have 2 weeks planned to go " home" to the UK. Planning on meeting up with D1 in Barcelona, as she travels around Europe. She is studying at Oxford in May, then backpacking around Europe for 3weeks.

D2 will attend a softball camp and I am hoping she may volunteer at the local hospital. She is considering medicine, so this may give her some insight into the career opportunities. She is such a people person and I could definitely see her in a caring profession.

Gibson - tell me more details about your D backpacking around Europe. Does she have some kind of schedule through an agency? How does she stay safe? Is it a cheap way to do it? I’d love to send my two older boys on a backpacking through Europe trip next summer!

As for S’15, I’m not sure what he’s doing this summer. He has an eclectic mix of things he’s doing, but nothing highly focused.

Whose class of 2015 is taking the AMC-10 tomorrow? Good luck to all our mathletes!

My D has decided to apply for a 2 week summer program at Barnard/Columbia. She is also applying for a local scholarship to pay for it.

I have no idea how selective the school program is, but i know the scholarship competition is intense. She’s writing 3 essays and has already gathered rec’s, so she is quite serious.

First taste of what her college process might be like…rather different from S’12s, it looks like :)

I really hope she gets it but we’ll see.

Gibson-Your D’s backpacking around Europe sounds so exciting. That was something I wanted to do in my younger days.

We hosted a Super Bowl party for S2 yesterday. We supplied chilidogs, queso, salsa, veggies with dip, fruits and a cake. That poor kid must be deprived of chips because I seldom buy chips for the family. He asked everyone to bring chips and ignored my suggestion that some could bring desserts as well. All the boys arrived with a bag of chips! I lost track of how many different kinds there were. Oh my they were in such a chip heaven!

Summer-S2 will do the backpacking expedition at Philmont Ranch, NM first two to three weeks of summer. After that, he will either work at a camp or get a summer job. I am also looking for a local French immersion program for him.

Hello all…Backpacking in Europe sounds wonderful!

S is working this summer as an assistant counselor, mon to friday, all day. He is great with kids so it should be fairly enjoyable for him. It will keep him outside and away from the video games.

Not a big superbowl family here. Watched with the family- Sunday Nights are so hard to plan anything.

Sunnydayfun: my ds is going Northern Tier this summer. They are planning for Seabase for next year. Last year was Emerald Bay on Catalina Island. Great opportunities!!!.

S is doing the AMC tomorrow! Good luck to all!

^Kangamom-My s did the Northern Tier last summer. A great wilderness journey/experience that he will remember for life. Hope a wonderful adventure for your ds too!

Both Ds doing AMC tomorrow.

Next summer, D2015 will volunteer as a Junior Naturalist at Audubon daycamp, attend National Latin Convention (with her big sister), take Driver’s Ed, and maybe take an online course. There’s also a big dance competition (regional finals) in July, that her team might or might not qualify for. Plus, it would be nice to squeeze in a family vacation before D2012 takes off for college.

Hi all! Good luck to everyone with AMC. Just got S12’s first acceptance, at least we know he is going SOMEWHERE for college. Still waiting on his top choices (UC schools) who don’t release decisions until March.
After many years of attending as a camper, D15 is looking forward to her first year as a CIT at a YMCA camp. It is a beautiful camp up in the Santa Cruz mountains, I know she’ll have a great time.

We’re still trying to work out summer. D’15 is applying to a bunch of programs and looking at jobs as well. I’ve been pushing hard to get applications done (I have unpleasant visions of senior year. Or perhaps it’s PTSD.) I know that it’s not late, but we’re no longer early.

Hi all, just checking in.

I’m aggravated that there was no opportunity for my D to try the AMC - at least that I know of. Her school just doesn’t seem to offer it, unless they did for the kids in the Math Club and it wasn’t publicized elsewhere. I wouldn’t really care that much but she’s good at math and I’d like to see her at least give it a go. This seems to be a pattern at her school and I’m starting to get a bit peeved. It’s a very large and very good school generally, but I never hear about stuff like this until I see it on CC. Hmpf.

As for summer, D will have to take another class to take care of some core courses. It’s just a phys ed course that should actually be pretty fun, but it cuts into what she can do. She’s got some volunteer things lined up (camp, tutoring K-1 ESL kids) but there’s not time for much else, and I’m not ready to give up the family vacation yet!

Good luck to those kiddos taking the AMC!

suzy – You may want to see if a local college is offering the AMC-10 on the B date (Feb. 23 this year).
