D has a long weekend too. Shes coming home for some of it, mostly to get her fall clothes
D16 has a Friday off in Oct, but we donât know if she has plans yet. Sheâs making an unexpected visit overnight home this weekend to fill out FAFSA.
S16 has Monday, 10/10 off. Heâs flying home Friday and back to school Monday. It remains to be seen if weâre then driving up to campus for parentâs weekend on the 13th.
Tomorrow marks 2 months since we dropped him off and we had our first Skype call last night. Heâs doing well, seems happy and needs a haircut. Heâs been unable to spend as much time as heâd like on couple of extra-curricular activities, but seems to be going when he can. Hopefully, heâll find a better balance once he has a semester under his belt.
Looking forward to seeing him in weekâŠ
S doesnât have a fall break, but is off for the week at Thanksgiving. Not sure when weâll make the clothing switch. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks.
DD only gets 10/10 and 10/11 off. She is already complaining on a cold weather and it is only 58F there. What will she say in a winter? The goal is to minimize Boston winter exposure by finding short winter internship back home for the month of January. We decided not to visit her during parents weekend, but to spend Thanksgiving break with her instead.
Itâs hard when you are used to 80 F weather to suddenly have 50 F mornings. Last week was beautiful, but itâs raining today.
My D has an umbrella, good rain jacket and rain boots. She will probably bring her shorts home and take her pea coat.
She likes to layer and wears a sweatshirt, fleece jacket and down vest most of fall so she probably wonât need anything warmer until after TG. But we have had snow in October before so you never know.
I want to wash some wool coats but they say âdry clean onlyâ. Do you have to dry-clean them? I really donât like the idea of PERC.
@mommdc there are dryer sheets that you can use to âdry cleanâ clothes in your home dyer-Dryell-I havenât used them, but maybe that would work for you?
@Ballerina016 your D is going to be shocked on that first below-zero day when walking to class could result in frostbite! But eventually she will get used to it as long as she has the right outerwear.
D is already planning a major clothing switch when she comes home at Thanksgiving. Sheâs glad that itâs finally been cooler in Nashville at least in the mornings and evenings, but sheâs amused by her friends from the deep south who have been wearing sweaters and coats when itâs 65. I told her not to get too smug, because sheâll be doing the same when sheâs home in November.
S doesnât really have a fall break - which is surprising considering D always had one. We are currently planning to go down for parents weekend - but he said he might be headed out of town for a conference - have to wait and see. Good thing I didnât book flights !
He called after a couple of weeks last night and we had a long talk. He said he knows when he calls, itâs going to be a long one - so he doesnât call as often ! Heâs very happy - settling in well. Good friends, likes his classes, is getting involved in a few extracurriculars. Canât ask for more!
We will be heading to DC for Colonial Weekend in a few weeks and we just canât wait to see our sweet girl! The weekend schedule of events is packed with so many great opportunities that we are having trouble picking (and we are trying to fit in a visit to the new African American Museum). Even though we talk/text ever day, just the thought of seeing her brings me to tears. As she was going through her sorority recruitment she sent photos and updates which made us so proud of/happy for her but seeing recent photo made us miss her so much. Tomorrow she starts her internship and she is excited! She loves DC and is in her element. Itâs been a stressful last few weeks for me but each time I text/speak with her it makes everything peaceful/calm again. Thank God for that blessing.
D16 has a long weekend 0ct 22. Which happens to coincide with her HS Homecoming, so she is headed home that weekend. Canât wait to see her.
@labegg how fun?
Was hanging with my upperclassmen friends and the fire alarm (not a drill) went off. Everythingâs ok but it took like 20 minutes.
DS has no break until Wednesday before Thanksgiving. He is so busy but, I think we convinced him we could visit for a day- take him to lunch/ shopping, etc. Hoping for the 23rd of Oct.
I just want to give him a hug.
@Ballerina016 same for my Hawaii girl in Boston. She texted me a picture of herself this morning in her wool coat and winter boots. She said everyone else is still in t-shirts. She said the mist feels like little ice arrows penetrating her soul. Ha ha, she has NO idea what she is in forâŠ
Exactly @palm715 ! Will she be defrosting during winter break at home? How long is her winter break?
@Ballerina016 she gets a whole month. Originally, she didnât want me to buy airplane tickets in case she could find some local internship in Boston. Last week she admitted that sheâd rather come home.
Finally got a string of words that made me happy. I asked when we could come for a day to switch in some warmer clothes and take him to lunch. âAny Sunday should be fine.â Yay! Actually, I think that was the longest sentence yet!
âShe said the mist feels like little ice arrows penetrating her soul.â Oh, I just love that! Iâm dying to hear what she thinks of ACTUAL ice pellets landing on her sometime this February. I do feel for her, because last time I was back home in NH in the middle of winter I thought I was going to die.
I visited some friends a couple of years ago in Ohio. The temps were in the 40âs and I was miserable. I could not get warm and the wind just seemed to cut through me. Now it does get cold here for a little while but it just didnât feel the same, And I used to walk the dog barefoot in the snow when I lived up north lol.
As Ia MA resident, I feel the need to chime in on the discussion of our recent weather. Summer weather lasted longer than normal this year and I think people got too used to it. Then it changed overnight. One day it was shorts weather and the next day you couldnât go outside without long pants and a sweatshirt. Even the natives are complaining.
But I do feel for those kids from warm places who are going to school in Boston. The wind whipping along the Charles River makes it very cold to walk outside in the winter and many city streets feel like wind tunnels. Just makes sure they have very warm clothes.
