@me29034 @palm715 @Ballerina016 - Yes even the natives up here are feeling cold. Add to that the drizzly cloudiness (finally our drought is being addressed but it’s not cheerful weather). Once all the buildings have turned on their heat and people are in “winter mode” it actually won’t feel quite as unfairly cold here in Boston. (Except walking across the Charles so avoid that if possible.)
I keep seeing references to College of Charleston, and I feel happy that I “know” someone there! Most recently it was in a sports announcement from BC (where I did grad work so I get their alumni notes) and before that, it was on a T-shirt in a Rosh Hashana song video that my kids’ Hebrew school forwarded. @carolinamom2boys
@fretfulmother It’s a hidden gem. Very strong Jewish population there. They even have a kosher dining room.
Just today D16 told me that the cold (in Western MA) hasn’t really bothered her. Says she’s trying to not bundle up too much … just yet. Winter coat is still packed away. Told her it’s great that she’s surviving Fall. :)) She told me another student from CA is already having a tough time with the weather.
D sent me a selfie wearing her new “fall” dress-3/4 sleeves. Her friends from the deep south were asking her all morning wasn’t she cold? Some of them were wearing coats. It was 67 degrees.
I am not looking forward to Jan/Feb and the subzero temps. You go outside and your face instantly freezes.
I am also the resident car cleaner and ice scraper. Although I do have my S help me with snow shoveling.
The silliest part for D is still wearing her flip flops with the winter gear. She got a lot of blisters wearing new shoes and can’t stand having anything press against her heels. So if you are in Boston and see a young woman completely bundled up except for her feet, be sure to say “Aloha.” :-c
@me29034 @Ballerina016 @fretfulmother Are all of you from the Boston area? We will be visiting S16 at family weekend right outside the Boston area, and the extended weather report did not look too bad. Now you have me worried!
@palm715 When I moved S16 in at the end of August, I took a wrong turn the day I departed and ended up driving to the airport via city streets. I drove right through Northeastern. I was so thrilled I “saw” where your D attends! If I take a wrong turn again when I am there in two weeks, I will shout aloha out the window to anyone remotely resembling your bundled/flipflopped D!
@4kids2graduate My kid is a California born and raised and attending school in MA. The coldest weather she ever experienced in CA was 55F so she is up for adventure. She plans to participate in a 8.5 miles run this weekend for a good cause and I am a little concern with the weather as well.
@fretfulmother and @me29034 are our local experts.
@palm715, did she try putting some bandaids on her heels? The bigger ones for knees might have some more padding.
Awww, thanks for the concern @mommdc. She now has all the supplies she needs, but didn’t get them until one got infected. Also, bad mom, I didn’t send her with a first aid kit.
@palm715 she may find some boots more comfortable than shoes as she can wear thicker socks. Even for business dress she could probably find a more comfortable pair of short ankle boots that could be professional looking but allow for wearing socks.
D16, also in Boston, is enjoying pulling out her winter clothes and boots. I’m waiting to see how long that lasts! We do get cold temps here at home, but it’s a “dry cold” which imo is much more tolerable than the “wet cold” in MA and the Eastern seaboard. Our hot weather is nicer too.
It was my high school’s homecoming and they actually won which doesn’t really happen. I wish I went home but I have too much to do this weekend- I have to work on 2 group projects in addition to a bunch of homework. Anyways I’ll be home next weekend. But my high school friends (who are still there) sent me pictures and it just brought back so many memories
Hi there! Haven’t peeked in lately. Just wondering - does anyone have the link to our acceptance list google doc handy? My son and I were trying to list the schools he was accepted to tonight, and we came up one short. That is really strange. We moved and I can’t find my college application file.
I’ll message you, @SouthFloridaMom9 .
Funny conversations about the weather. My D went from PA to SC and while we are cooler, damp and rainy this week (60degrees) she is happily in shorts in the 80s.
Hopefully all those warm-weather kids will not experience a NE winter like they had 2 years ago!
It’s FAFSA day! Got an email from FA saying that.
Well, we finally had a better talk with S today. He started out by saying everything is fine but I told him he needs to find another word! He did share more after that. Sounds like he has a really busy week with a test, project and paper for several classes. It’s a shame because WashU is hosting the Presidential debate next Sunday. The campus is completely in debate mode but S is having his busiest week of school work so far. He did not win a ticket to the debate (they had a student lottery) but he said there are several debate watching parties happening on campus so he will go to one. S has a long weekend the weekend of Oct. 15 but he is not coming home - we are going there 10 days later for Parents’ weekend.
We saw our D16 in person. I picked her up from a training day off campus, and had a nice drive home with her. She slept at home in her own bed. Did FAFSA with DH, then helped him switch out screens for storm windows. She was definitely texting much more than she did in HS. We packed her off with a few favorite snacks. DH drove her 1 hour back to campus and had dinner with her in the dining hall before heading home. Hope they had a good chat.
Everything seems to be cooking with gas, except she hasn’t met with some important academic advisers yet. (Her freshman adviser really doesn’t know her 4+1 program, so that’s dangerous.) I think she now has hit her stride as a college kid.
