pancakes: now I’m starving and my lunch was delayed today because of a special schedule
banishment to corner: nonsense! who even remembers other people’s kids’ ages (IRL), much less their colleges
hosting prefrosh: absolutely! my son now has an air-mattress (folds small and self-inflates but I’m not sure how in spite of my STEM background) and a camp cot so he could in principle even host by your son and my DS2, who is also '20, on the same night!
Apropos of nothing else - remember that DS1 is in a dorm that has his triple two floors away from a bathroom. The other night at home, he said, “let me run up and down the stairs a few times before my shower just to keep in shape”. He has actually gotten quite trim/fit in college, with all the walking, his frequent trips to the elliptical, and a huge amount of fresh fruit/veggies in his diet. We had to go to the store three times this week; it’s like feeding some kind of large zoo animal.
After telling S the two weekends fall semester when we wouldn’t be home if he wanted to visit, wouldn’t you know both times he texted the Wednesday before asking if this was the week we wouldn’t be there. Lol. So no fall visits home until Thanksgiving, which is soon anyway.
We rarely hear anything from S but he did text his spring schedule this morning so I’m glad he has that arranged. Next up is housing for next year.
Isn’t odd to think Thanksgiving break is so close?!? Last year the time from August to December was endless and stressful. This year it has gone much faster even though we do miss them.
Yes, in August it seemed like November would never be here, and now it’s just about 2 weeks until D is home. And LAST fall it was just an all-around crazy-making time.
I don’t post often, but still keep up with this thread.
When I have time to catch up on posts, I find my “old brain” often trying to remember where each of your DC are going to school…and most of the time I cannot figure it out. @Waiting2exhale It is so good to know I am not the only one! Your question and @Ballerina016 reply made me chuckle!
Any of you who don’t do this already - please feel free to mention/remind once in awhile what college your child attends…my “old brain” would appreciate it! Also love hearing where parents are from too (and occasional reminders even if it was posted before)!
Looks like DS may be coming home for a weekend visit before Thanksgiving :). D18 is in the school musical and he is going to try to come back to watch her in it (this from the kid who never wanted to go to her shows when he lived at home). Keeping our fingers crossed that he won’t be too busy that weekend for the visit because we can’t wait to see him again - even if he’ll be coming back home again about 10 days later for Thanksgiving weekend. One other bonus is that I think we can finally head to get his replacement driver’s license…he never did find his wallet! On the downside, it means I’ve got to drive about 12+ hours to pick him up and bring him back to campus for a super short visit.
Oh and another thing…@palm715@HappyFace2018 I have always loved the varied comments and perspectives on this forum…that is what keeps me here. Thanks to everyone for that!
Also, I would love to join in the pancake feed, wondering if gluten free pancakes are available @Waiting2exhale?
@4kids2graduate Thank you for your comment regarding varying perspectives. I do enjoy that about this thread. My sweet girl attends GW and has enjoyed her time this far. We attended the Colonial Weekend at GW a few weeks back and were overjoyed to see how well she’s acclimated to DC. We are excited for the upcoming Thanksgiving break, holiday shopping and spending family time together :x
@HappyFace2018 So happy for you and D to have Thanksgiving break together! Cherish that!!! Where are you from?
S16 chose a college 3000 miles away (in Massachusetts, and has the entire Thanksgiving week off), as did D14 (in New York and only has 5 day weekend for Thanksgiving break)… neither are able to make it home for the Thanksgiving holiday. We are from the the Pacific NW! They each love their choices, and we happily support their choices even though it limits their ability to get home during the year (due to travel constraints and costs).
Thankfully D14 and S16 are trying to figure out a way to get together with each other for the Thanksgiving holiday (6 hrs apart and no personal vehicles). @palm715 your D16 seems VERY adaptable and resourceful as far as possible plans for the Thanksgiving holiday! My D14 may visit her brother S16 at his college outside of Boston for Thanksgiving…so I will tell both to be on the lookout for someone in flip flops (no matter what the weather) if they visit Boston during that long weekend!!! There is no meal plan available for S16 for the whole week of Thanksgiving (what is that about anyway?), so I picture D14 and S16 walking two or three miles to Whole Foods to get groceries for the week…thankfully there is at least a kitchen on each dorm floor so if they get groceries they have a place to cook!
I keep trying to click my heels together three times with my ruby slippers, and repeat over and over …they will be fine, they will figure it out, they will survive! It definitely is hard to be a parent, so far away, especially during this first holiday away from S16 (youngest of my four kids).
@4kids2graduate We are from Carmel, Indiana but I’ll be joining my sweet hubby in retirement soon. We will be heading back to St. Simons Island, Georgia.
@carlson2 thanks! @Ballerina016 thanks for asking! S16 is happy with his choice, has definitely found his niche, even though it has it’s stressful and overwhelming times. He is SO happy to be in a teeny, tiny, alternative school. Who knew? [Picture mom wiping her brow and saying “whew”!]
@4kids2graduate I forgot that you were in the PNW too! As a reminder to everyone, my CC name, “sseamom” stands for South Seattle Mom, where I live. D is also at a tiny college, and it’s been mostly a great deal for her, with the head of her tiny department as her advisor, who signs off on her taking upper division courses, and such. Because she’s our last at home and she got a very generous gift just before leaving for college, she’ll be home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, but is already talking about visiting the beach at her roommate’s aunt and uncle’s place for spring break. I’m beginning to think that when she goes back after the winter break we won’t see her again until May.
Glad your son is happy. I hope he and your D work out something for Thanksgiving week and find some good food.
@sseamom@4kids2graduate - I’m in Portland, so hi to my fellow PNWers! My son is at Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, NY. He won’t be coming home for Thanksgiving, either. He was supposed to meet his sister (D09) in PA, since she was going to be there, but it sounds like I may need to scramble to find him a flight to visit her at home in the Florida Keys. Oh, kids!
And @HappyFace2018, I went to Purdue, so I know where you are (and can properly pronounce your town’s name, lol!). I was rooting for The Other Team, but if Cleveland had to lose, it couldn’t have been to a better team than the Cubbies. Congrats!
@auntiek I couldn’t agree me. We have neighbors who are CUBS fans and neighbors who are Indians fans and we all celebrated together. All the kids wore their Indians and Cubs gear to school. Some were sad but we greeted them at the bus stop (in front of my house) with little goody bags of candy. Cheered them right up!!
