Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@4kids2graduate, maybe there is a church putting on a TG meal nearby where your kids could go?

Or maybe a professor or classmate of S will invite them?

DH and I are on our way to Freshmen Parentsā€™ Weekend, and we plan to have dinner with @carlson2 tonight, if she is wants a little reckless danger in her lifeā€“I am mostly recovered from a hideous gamboo (and yes, I did have a flu shot in September!). Unlike the weather two weeks ago, it looks like itā€™ll be a beautiful weekend in Boston. @ballerina016, check to see if you can get a good flight and come join us. :wink: You too, @4kids2graduate and @palm715 and others with kids in Beantown.

Because weā€™ll be gone right up to Tuesday, DH and I voted early last night with our two younger kidsā€“we always allow them to check a few boxes and there were some exciting boxes to check this yearā€“and then we went to dinner and watched a bit of the game before returning home to watch the thrilling conclusion (sympathy to the Cleveland fans I know I this list). What an historic night!

Really fun to have everyone popping back in on the list. Iā€™m always glad to hear updates on our 16ers! Looking back at this time last year, Iā€™d say they all did a pretty good job!

@auntiek, howdy from a Skidmore alumā€¦

@sseamom, I have some Seattle connections (friends) and will be in the area for work next month.

Itā€™s a small worldā€¦

Wishful thinking @EastGrad Have a fun weekend and great cc reunion. Our next trip to Boston is not until Thanksgiving. Anyone else in Boston during that time? We will be spending Thanksgiving Day in Boston (yet to find what will be open), and spending next few days in Portland, ME. DD is coming home for a long six weeks winter break. She got an externship in her major with a company located 8 minutes drive from where we live. I also just booked her flight home for a spring break. DD absolute loves Boston but is looking forward to wearing short and flip-flops in January again!

@Ballerina016 too funny about our kids. Itā€™s 78 degrees in Nashville right now and D is sad that she canā€™t wear any of her favorite sweaters. She loves them and has a nice collection of them, but so far it hasnā€™t been cool enough to wear them. Sheā€™s actually angry that the weather is so nice all the time! Seattle kid for sure. I keep reminding her that when she is home at Thanksgiving she will be freezing all week after all the warm weather.

That is funny @sseamom Have her visit my DD in Boston to show off her nice sweater collection . I am hoping her love for warm weather is what will make her return home when she graduates, because clearly Boston can offer much more opportunities than our city.

Have a wonderful time @EastGrad!

@4kids2graduate: Hmm, Iā€™ll have to dig around D18ā€™s cooking magazines for a gluten free recipe, but Iā€™m sure I can find one. Thanks for letting me know - Iā€™d hate to think you would just sit and watch the rest of us eat.

@fretfulmother: You make me laugh so much.

The way these conversations (or bits of conversations) unfold have been meaningful for me at times.

I remember last Christmas when @sseamomā€™s daughter walked out to be near her, though (I think) she was actually ambling about in her sleep. While I hadnā€™t posted it, on that very evening, my Dā€™18, or Waiting2Exit, had done the very same thing, then walked back to her bed after curling up near me for a few hours.

I had been wrapping the last of gifts, as, I think, had been @sseamom. The parallels blew me away, and just reinforced that we are all doing much of the same work, at the same time.

Then there is the time we began to discuss the homework our kids will not turn in, though it is completed. I donā€™t think Iā€™d laughed so deeply or smiled over so long a period as during that one. Really, I must have smiled for days just thinking about the ways in which our ā€œvoicesā€ resonated.

Thank you all for some really great playmates, classmates, best friends, co-workers and life-mates for my wonderful, wacky kids, btw.

Thanks for the conversation.

Oh my gosh @Waiting2exhale !I remember that! D wasnā€™t walking in her sleep, but wasnā€™t really very awake. It was one of the sweetest moments. Tonight she Facetimed us because she wanted to check on us to make sure we were ok. Quite a change from us being the ones to check on her.

DS has signed up for 2nd semester classes. Iā€™ve known we will not see as much of him 2nd semester due to weather making traveling more challenging, no parents weekend, no big family events, etc but boy his schedule makes that a given. He will be studying and rewarding himself with basketball spectating breaks. Those engineers earn that starting salary.

My sweet girl and her roomie went hiking today on Billy Goat Trail, MD. Love their free spirits :x

Thatā€™s fun. @HappyFace2018 I spent my day doing work peer editing papers, wanting to rip my hair out

@readingclaygirl Between mid-terms and papers, she and her five roomies have had a long few weeks. She and this roomie have been planning this for a few weeks now. Will you have some downtime this evening/tomorrow?

@HappyFace2018 Iā€™m taking a couple hours to just chill tonight. The entirety of tomorrow will be spent doing a group math project

@readingclaygirl A little time away is always good. Enjoy it. :slight_smile:

@readingclaygirl: ā€œā€¦I spent my day doing work peer editing papers, wanting to rip my hair outā€ -

Were they that bad?

@Waiting2exhale Yes.

Today marks the beginning of homecoming week at Dā€™s school, so as a member of SGA sheā€™s about to be very busy. For some reason, the homecoming ball is on Wednesday night, and sheā€™ll attend as one of the SGA reps. We found a lovely gown on Amazon and it fits like it was made for her. Her roommate got the same one in another color-canā€™t wait to see them posing together. There are events all week and D gets to ā€œvolunteerā€ for them but is actually required to help. Itā€™s all good, though, because she can count all of it to fulfill her scholarship required volunteer hours. Meanwhile, she is counting down the days until she comes home for Thanksgiving!

How fun @sseamom !

@sseamom: That your daughter and her roommate have really bonded is great to hear. That they will be ā€œtwinningā€ is soā€¦girlie. I love it!

After telling me that sheā€™d met her roommateā€™s family, and that they were nice, I have heard no more of the roommate. Nor of anyone else, really.

She did get a question from her sister here at home about whether sheā€™d run into any of those Olympic students, and her reply was so cute. She turned her phone to camera mode, kept shifting her eyes to the right the way you do when youā€™re trying to direct someoneā€™s attention, and whispered, ā€œ(name-of-student) is sitting right next to me, eating a banana!ā€ All we got to see were my daughterā€™s eyes and the expression on her face, so she respected the studentā€™s right not to broadcast everywhere, at any time.

By the way, @sseamom, would you happen to be counting off those days until her visit as well?
