@Waiting2exhale I hope everyone respects the rights of the Olympians they call classmates as well as your D did. Because at they end of the day, they are students and humans too.
Thanks.
Gonna have to introduce my girls to you one day, @readingclaygirl. I think young ladies affirming other young ladies is in short supply.
Definitely @Waiting2exhale And that’s one reason I love my college- everyone is so supportive of each other.
We’ve been so busy this weekend. DS16 came home to celebrate DS19’s 16th birthday. He returns to school on Tues just in time to vote . While he was home , we were able to go to an early birthday dinner for him as well . He will be 19 on Veteran’s Day. He spent the weekend assisting on an Eagle project work day, attending an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for a close family friend, bonding with DS16 over Clemson and Panthers football and meeting up with some friends and his favorite HS teacher and academic coach . I will be sad to see him leave, but he’ll be back in two weeks for Thanksgiving and two weeks later for Christmas .
Happy 16th to your DS19 @carolinamom2boys
Sounds like a wonderful time with your DS @carolinamom2boys ! I am so glad you got that time with him!!
We go to visit DS on campus next weekend at our substitute family weekend. There is a performance that parent’s and siblings are invited to attend. It will be DD’s first visit to campus since a quick drive through of campus on a family vacation early in the college search. It will be good for her to see him there. I think she misses him but keeps much of it to herself for fear of pushing the rest of us over the edge. We are adjusting to this new normal but we are not there yet. Seeing where he eats, sleeps, hangs out, studies, etc will help her feel a part of it all and not quite so “left behind”.
Enjoy your weekend @Cheeringsection .
Thanks @carolinamom2boys !
Moms and Dads, may I ask you a question?
What would you do for a student (your child) who is unable to get the major they desire because the courses to complete the major are next offered only in what would be the fifth year of college?
Clearly, we would have to pay for the fifth year entirely, lacking any sort of financial aid, and our lives will not make that possible with 3 kids in college next year. I would very much still like to be able to eat, and buy clothing for my HS kid.
There are options for him to stay in school the extra year if he can get approved for a joint program with an outside group which helps kids to complete their degree, allotting them the extra time, but qualifying might not work out from what I understand of the eligibility rules for the program, and I just skimmed the page so I’d have to spend more time there.
I am sad for him that he would have to choose something which is not what he absolutely wants, but would get a degree in a related concentration.
How would you counsel your student? Is this a biggie or not?
@Waiting2exhale is it engineering? Would a co-op semester in year 4 be an option? something like that would allow for earning $ as well as buying time so he/she could come back and complete the coursework. I also wouldn’t be suprised if the U had a pocket of scholarship money available for students in this situation- maybe an assistantship of sorts. I would have C16 talk with advisors soon about what options exist- I’m sure it’s a situation they’ve dealt with before.
another avenue might be to look for courses at a U close to home that could be taken during the summer, or courses available through distance learning, or even taking a semester as a visitiing student at another U if suitable substitution credit were available.
@oneundecided…Ah! They have a cross registration with a school nearby, and I never thought of this. Okay, off to do some looking.
Thanks so much for your thorough brainstorming on my behalf. I generally don’t have to do much for this kid, but he seems a little resigned to accepting something I know is not in his heart. I will tell him to grab his advisor and have a sit-down.
He is studying physics.
Happy Birthday to your son @carolinamom2boys ! Glad your family had a nice visit.
Enjoy YOUR weekend, @Cheeringsection !
Good luck to your son @Waiting2exhale . Hopefully he can find a work-around. Cross registration is an option at my D’s college and it’s reserved for classes that are NOT available at her own school. Another option might be to do an exchange at another college-that is also offered at D’s school. You pay the “home college” rates to do this, and classes are counted towards your major. Good luck!
An exchange…so he’d seek to enroll full-time elsewhere, taking all classes there? Hmmm. Do I have that right, @sseamom?
@Waiting2exhale You are scaring me now. I am not prepared to pay for the fifth year at all.All the best to find an acceptable solution to this problem.
@Waiting2exhale @sseamom is likely referring to the NSE (National student exchange) program… they have 2 plans (A & B) one is paying home school tuition; the other involves paying the exchange schools tuition (this is more likely the case if it is a public OOS school b/c they will typically grant you instate rates for student in the NSE program.)
My sweet girl just FaceTimed me to let me know that she and her GW Democrats have been invited to attend the Clinton-Springsteen-Bon Jovi rally in Philadelphia!! They’ve been phone banking all week and this was a welcomed surprise. They are all in ZipCars heading to Philly!! The excitement on their faces was awesome!! She said “momma, keep your phone close because I’ll FaceTime you as much as I can!!”
That’s so exciting! @HappyFace2018 what an experience!
@oneundecided : I have never heard of that! All my time at CC the last college application season, and that is a new one to me. Again, thanks!
@Ballerina016: Nah, don’t even let it wrinkle your forehead. I think this guy got distracted by other things and began pursuing them, then looked up and found his luck had run out. Besides the crazy happenstance of the school, which people think serves up his major as a main dish all the time, skipping some courses in alternating years. Took me by surprise, I have to say. At any rate, if anything crazy should present itself, I’ll let you know so you can be on the lookout.
@Waiting2exhale It is very easy to get distracted there with all the opportunities. This is our concern as well. All those entrepreneurial winds and startups popping here and there. She already being approached by another Boston school’s students to join a startup. Little kids play Lego, big kids play startups. I think it is distractive and absolutely unnecessary right now.
