Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

S is continuing in his first semester ways by just doing his thing and not staying in touch much. He finally texted Friday night to ask about some wording of current awards/etc. but who knows why. This is his nature, just as calling frequently and chatting for hours is his brother’s. Spring break is still six weeks away, and a few weeks after that we get to attend a scholarship ceremony. Finals end May 12th. That doesn’t seem so far off.

We have the same problem @Midwest67 . Gotta get DS home from Cornell about mid May and then turn around and head to NJ to see DD graduate in early June. I should probably book some hotels.

Not much to report here. Hoping S16 remembers his Honors Mentor application is due in 3 days. He has a line on a summer job/internship which we’re waiting to hear more about.

Spring break in about 4 weeks, then a trip up to the annual year end awards/tech/ideas festival in early May. Two weeks later freshman year will be over.

S19 has his first three school visits booked this spring. We start early because marching band makes it tough to do anything in the fall. I know I need to start trolling around in the 2019 thread…

Glad to report I was wrong! DS has reported more info about planned roommate and suitemates. Process for room choice is well explained by the university. All roomies must be designated by 2/24 and actual room selection is the following week. I sent him pricing and we discussed criteria to consider when choosing. We will see how this shakes out within his chosen group.

@Cheeringsection

I hope the plans for next year’s housing and roommates/suitemates goes smoothly for your S (and for everyone else’s kid!).

I have memories of figuring out housing for the following year being a stressful time with the potential for disagreements and hurt feelings, especially when trying to fill an apartment or suite.

My D is stressing about housing. They have a group of 4 that are trying for an apartment style dorm room, or a suite if they can’t get that, but they are concerned that since they will only be sophomores they won’t get it. One of their group has a good lottery number but the others don’t. If the plan doesn’t work and they end up having to split D will be picking near the end. Her lottery number is something like 8,000. She is guaranteed housing but is worried about what it might be.

@me29034, hope your D and roommates get their housing.

My DS should have a great lottery number for a freshman. He may find himself popular and recruited by groups with lower numbers once word gets out.

D got into the honors program at her college. For the panel interview, one question they asked was what appealed to her most about the program. She told them research and the senior project (it crosses several disciplines and is started at the end of junior year). The honors program chair got very excited about that. According to the letter they sent, one of her responsibilities will be to be a role model to other students. Since she sent me a copy of a text she got this morning from another student telling her that’s exactly what she is, I figure that paragraph is already covered.

S has been fighting a cold for a week, and it got worse today. He has to wait until tomorrow, when Philadelphia is supposed to be hit by a winter storm, to see a doctor.

@mstomper there is no “dislike” button so :-q :-q :-q

@mstomper, did he go to the student health center on campus?

@mommdc, he did go to the campus health center. Maybe we should tell him that the next time that happens to go to an urgent care center and we’ll reimburse him.

Hope he gets better soon. It’s awful being sick during school.

School closed down, including student clinic. Philadelphia ended up not being hit that hard. At least he doesn’t have to worry about classes today.

My D tries to take extra vitamin C and zinc when she is sick.

Weren’t they able to give him anything at the health center?

Is he 18? Then he should be able to buy Sudafed, Dayquil might also help, and sleep!

A couple weeks ago, our D13 was laid low with a bad cold, fatigue, dizziness and fever. Since she had just returned from study abroad over winter break, student health services had their antennae up for tropical diseases. Tests were run, but results would take time.

She kept us up-to-date on her temperature over 2 days, but on the 3rd day when she said her head hurt “REALLY REALLY bad”, and she was missing classes bc she felt so poorly, we were ready to A.) drive down immediately or B.) tell her to go to the ER, like now.

She decided to trudge back to student health services, where they found out she had a raging ear infection. She’d never had one before and didn’t recognize the signs.

It did kick the Parental Worry Machine into overdrive. Ack!

@mstomper I hope your son is well on his way to feeling better!

Just be careful about taking Sudafed - if you’re sensitive (like me), it can result in insomnia and can cause your heart to race. I learned this the hard way! :-S

S called before buying otc meds. I’m also home sick, btw. We’ve got enough sick people at our school without me dragging myself in and making it worse.

Congrats to your daughter @sseamom !!! Yesterday was a snow day here. Sickness is definitely going around here as well.
