Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@RyanG1207 that happens to me with Benadryl.

@mstomper - me too :frowning: this flu bug is not fun at all!
Hoping Tamiflu works on me.
Take care everyone & feel better soon!

D16 has applied for admittance to a UG pre-professional major, and also for a UG fellowship. Fingers crossed, candle lit, and all that.

I don’t have any news about my daughter in college, but found this sweet, so thought I’d share.

I packed my youngest son up to fly across country alone this morning and sent him on his way with his dad to the airport. After I closed and locked the door I turned around to do some straightening up (a 14-year-old boy who has discovered that he can craft a particular look in the way he dresses goes through quite the combinations of clothing before placing them into his suitcase).

After a few minutes of being alone in the house I heard knocking at the door and was surprised to see my son standing there. He told me he’d forgotten the bread I baked for him. I asked him if he really came back for bread, he said, “Yes, I’m really looking forward to eating it, plus I don’t want you to feel bad when you find it still in the kitchen after you wrapped it for me. You’ll be all upset with yourself.”

Never gonna let that one get too far.

That was so sweet!
My S texted me late Thursday night, suggesting he could come home Friday. Then Friday morning, as I was ready to leave to get him, he said no, don’t come. I was SO depressed so I snuck off to see La La Land again- lucked out to find it in only one theater in my area. I love that movie! Then last night, he texted again that he could come this morning. So now I’m sitting here with S, enjoying his company for 24 hours. Yay!

@me29034, were your D and her friends on the suite/apt list this week? Only two weeks until spring break.

@mommdc No they weren’t on the list. It’s been a bit of a traumatic week because of that. D has not found anyone with a higher number than hers so she is way at the end of picking a room if it comes to that. They are looking at options. BTW, I have learned that her number is about 6000 not 8000 as I posted earlier, but it still is a very high number. They have started looking for something off campus but it seems they are late to the game for that.

One of the girls has a good number (but apparently not good enough for a 4 person apt or suite) so she should have her pick of what she wants when her turn comes. But now that they didn’t get the apt/suite that girl is considering getting a single instead. If she does decide to get a double, she will pick my D as roommate but if she doesn’t, my D will get the dregs. She and the two other girls with bad numbers talked to housing and were told that probably by the time it gets to them the only thing that will be left are single open beds in doubles where someone has already picked the other half. They were told that the girl with the second best number, which is about 5000, might still be able to get an open double. Anyway, I’ve had several phone calls this week with a very upset D. She has the very real possibility of her only option being picking a space in a room with a total stranger. It some ways it’s worse than freshman year where you at least got to pick a roommate from the Facebook group. The worst part is that the housing selection doesn’t happen until the end of March so this will be hanging over their heads for over a month.

On the good side, I spoke to her yesterday and she didn’t mention housing at all which means she has stopped obsessing about it. She talked about participating in an anti-Trump rally, and studying in Schenley park because the weather was so nice, and how she got a 99 on her biology test when the class average was a 75. Today she is visiting the house of a friend who lives in Pittsburgh so she can play with his dog. Overall things are good, but the housing situation stinks.

@me29034 I completely feel your pain. Housing has been a nightmare for DS16 as well. CofC has changed how housing is decided this year. Students are no longer able to choose roommates or reserve their current rooms. Housing is determined by credit hrs/ class status . My son and 5 of his suitemates were hoping to stay together and get a townhouse suite with 3 singles and a double . The problem is because they all brought varying levels of AP credits that they range from Jr to Freshman Status. The junior status student was able to get into the the townhouse to start the process, and my son and another “sophomore” were able to join him with vhopes that the other 2 could join them when it was their time to register. Unfortunately , 2 other boys reserved the spaces. They cannot look at other rooms as long as they have a reservation, so they are meeting today to decide whether to all give up their existing reservations and try to stay together in a different dorm or stay put with 2 random roommates. It’s been crazy with a lot of unnecessary stress. Because of their varying class "status " they are at a definite disadvantage to students with the same status who can sit together and make a reservation. It truly is very frustrating. I agree that it is worse than freshman year having to start all over again once relationships have been made. Please keep us updated on your situation. I hope it all works out for your daughter .

So sorry to hear some students are struggling with obtaining their housing assignments for next fall. DS finds out today if he gets his first choice (may not be enough space) or if he has to go back in line for room selection in another dorm after spring break. He surprised us by joining a service fraternity but they do not have a house of their own. Instead they have applied via a group process to live in a dorm reserved for similar groups. His roommate is not a full member of the group so if there is not enough space, they will get bumped first. I am sure it will all work out just fine but it would be nice to have it settled today. I wish luck to all that are going through the process at their schools!!

My D’16 hasn’t said anything to me about her rooming situation for next year, and I have no idea how it works where she is.

What I find interesting about @carolinamom2boys’ detailed information, though, is how starkly different that situation seems to my oldest son’s rooming assignments and selection over the years.

He has stayed put in the original dorm building, and could stay in the original room to which he was assigned had he chosen to do so, or move next door to a larger room, essentially “inheriting” it from which an upperclassman whose large room had been partitioned by the university to make my son’s small room.

He moved across to another hall in the same building, one more suite style in set-up than his freshman year digs, and has stayed in the same room for two years now.

Thinking back, I think my own college experience was very close to what carolinamom2boys mentioned, right down to the random roommate being assigned to our apartment-style dorm because of credit preference privileges. On the whole I don’t suppose it ruined too much about the experience, save that the girl stored bags and bags of grain in her room. And she smelled like grain, the way the air does when you pass a silo. Odd.

@Waiting2exhale This is a new system this year which has had a lot of negative reviews by students and parents alike. I’ll be curious to see if it’s revised next year. It really is my only complaint about the school.

@me29034, feel free to PM me. The girls could try the waiting list. Someone here on CC posted in the past that when a another group that got a suite decided to later move off campus, they were able to get it off the wait list in March.

Also since your D had a very good GPA, she could still contact the Honors LLC if they still have room available.
They have honors floors in PA hall and Forbes Craig apts.

If your D’s friend is able to pull her into a double, that would work. Would depend what’s still available.

Lastly, last year some parents posted that all that was left to pick was singles in Lothrop. From what I hear they are quite nice.

Sorry to read about the housing stress! May solutions present themselves, so these kids can move on!

Yes, freshman year you could apply to LLCs and put several freshman housing options in order of preference.

For sophomore year everyone who does not apply for a LLC or greek housing, or retains their room, enters a lottery system. If a group wants to live together in a suite or apt, they have to apply together and depending on lowest lottery number and class standing, they might get put on the list (each year it depends on how many freshmen move off campus and how many sophomores retain their suite/apt, how many are available).

There are some rooms that can be retained from freshman year, but only if they were not in a building that is only freshman housing.

It’s stressful, but hopefully it will work out.

carolinamom2boys—housing is so important (our entire life) but it can be a make or break for a college student.

housing should be plentiful and singles should be available to everyone. (IMO) housing is not a profit loss area for colleges so I am not sure why many schools seem to never update and or expand housing more.

just like in a lot of hospitals you get a room mate. so a person is really sick and a random other person who is really sick shares a room with you. terrible idea. but I digress. most hospitals are updating to the 21st century. a lot of colleges seem to be converting doubles into triples. (even though I keep reading that the opposite is happening)

@zobroward Part of the issue with my son’s school is its in an urban and historical city so it’s landlocked with restrictions . There’s no room to expand .

Charleston is an awesome city.
creativity can be employed, without ruining the character of the area. if I had the ability to do design work and engineering I would love to do true urban renewal and or re-purposing without ruining the character of the area. but I am only one step past drawing stick figures and no architecture /engineering knowledge and noway I would ever go back to school
but one can dream.

Just an aside @zobroward CofC has one of the best historic preservation and urban development programs and majors. DS19 may be looking at the program.

Thanks everyone for the supportive comments. I’ll let you all know what ultimately happens.

@carolinamom2boys that’s too bad about your son’s suite. It’s nuts that they don’t allow the group to stay together and instead make each person reserve the room separately. I hope it all works out for him.

Yes, I hope they listen to parent and student complaints. The students with higher class standing should be able to pull in all members of the group.
