Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@carolinamom2boys Will your son be home for the summer? Has he lined up any work yet?

@Midwest67 He will be home this summer . No job yet. He wants to wait one more year for internships. He plans to apply to the movie theatre or some stores .

Wow- sounds like many will be finished soon- first week in May!
DS wonā€™t be finished with his last final until May 16th. He will be home for 1 week & then has an intership in Houston for the entire summer. He will only be back home 1 week before he will head back to school in the fall. I kind of wish he would be home for the summer but, this is a great opportunity & the extra $ sure doesnā€™t hurt! $-)

@bookmom7

We were so relieved to learn that D16 will be moving out the weekend before D13 graduates. I had visions of having to do both on the same weekend! WHEW!

Where will your son live during his internship over the summer?

@Midwest67 - glad you wonā€™t have to rush or choose between D13 & D16!

The company actually provides housing- a townplace hotel & transportation. I wonder how he will adjust to moving back into a dorm room after this experience!

S16 will be home the first week of May. He has already completed one class that he was taking on line. A. Heā€™s been working all semester on line for his summer job and they pay him for 10 hours a week. He must be rolling in dough because he doesnā€™t spend much. He will live on campus next year and will get the biggest room on his floor. He is loving college and just got selected to be one of those people who walk backwards and give tours next year! He has to be trained but heā€™s very excited. The whole reason he goes to Tech is because the tour guide we had in 2014 loved it so much. It was the best tour we took out of eight and I know my son will do his best. Just canā€™t see him walking backwards and not breaking a bone.

DS came home for Easter weekend (yay!) but he isnā€™t finished with exams until May 24th. They didnā€™t start back until Jan. 30th, though, so the long winter break leads to a late finish in the semester. He is absolutely loving at school, so we are very happy that itā€™s such a great fit for him. We also are relieved to see that heā€™s made it through without too many bumps along the way - he had a lot to learn about being independent, and seems to have picked up many key skills heā€™ll need in life. Plus, heā€™s become much more outgoing and even has a GF who heā€™s been good friends with since the start of fall semester. Now if he could just start looking for a summer job! :slight_smile:

Glad to hear from you all that your D.C. are doing well!! DS is also home for Easter weekend. He has his summer job lined up (here) and sophomore job (campus) lined up as well. He has gotten very involved on campus and made a lot of great friends. He told me one goal is to have enough fun money saved up to be able to do more things in the city next year. I think that is a great plan. I love that he wants to spread his wings even more. Class registration for next fall is done. It will be another tough semester with 18 hours but his junior and senior years will be lighter since he has AP credit to cover some classes.

I thought that I had posted this earlier , but DS16 will be a writing coach( paid position , YAY) next year. Heā€™s very excited to have the opportunity to earn a little extra money, but not overload his schedule . It is so great to see him happy and maturing. Heā€™s had some bumps finding his tribe initially, but is well connected with a small , core group now. I love everyoneā€™s updates.

DDā€™s big news during her visit home this weekendā€¦ā€œWell I am not going to fail Chem 1002 but I have accepted that I am going to have to take it againā€¦ā€. Lovely!

DD is loving Marquette and is doing just fine overall. Schedule is locked in for next fall and she was hired for a small paying job as the Band Librarian.

1 month left and freshman year will be in the books! Just 5 more to go for her DPT program.

We have been keeping it light, biting our tongues, but anxiously watching the year progress for D16.

Iā€™d say something shifted after Spring Break because there has been an uptick in little text updates with pictures even! Also, she has had a flurry of good news to share which seems to indicate she is getting more engaged at school.

Most of it has to do with opportunities she has applied for this year, but wonā€™t start up until next year.

So? Looks like she is feeling less salty, and is willing to go back in the fall, lol No idea if she has found a roommate for next year. Weā€™ll wait until she is ready to fill us in.

She was also gung-ho to get out of there in 3 years, but now mentioned in passing that she just might add a minor so she can stay the fourth year.

Really, itā€™s her life, but itā€™s nice to see her open, and not so rigid about things. We just want her to happy, right?

Happy Easter to those who celebrate! Happy Spring to all!

@mommdc wow, we have the same spacing and I believe the same genders, no to mention oldest kids at same school! My S18 refuses to consider his sisterā€™s school though.

We have the same spacing as well, and S18 says no way to his brotherā€™s school.

Dā€™s finals begin on Friday, but she will stay for graduation and then training to be an orientation leader/tour guide next year and will be coming home on May 5. Iā€™m going out to get her mostly to get away from the wet, cool NW weather for a few days and visit a CC mom friend. The drama I mentioned in my last post has subsided, boyfriend is now just a friend, and D has resolved her major issues. Sheā€™ll double major in English and special ed and got for endorsements in both elementary and special ed. Sheā€™s taking 18 credits next year, but will need to move some classes around to fit in the English requirements. Sheā€™ll also be taking introduction to honors so these changes should make her happy.

This summer sheā€™s working with the Urban League in a paid position, helping to run the program where she interned last summer. Sheā€™ll be heading back to school at the end of July to do more orientation training. She and her roommate have become good friends and will room together next year. They chose the girlsā€™ upperclass dorm and got a top on the biggest room, which they got. This year flew by-D grew so much in so many ways. Hard to believe it was a year ago that we were all fretting about the SS Indecision!

Glad to see all are well. I got to go home for Easter which was nice. Housing selection was successful- I got where I wanted but I donā€™t have a roommate and will have one randomly assigned at some point which is kind of nerve wracking. Less than a month left here-the first year has flown.

Good luck with the roommate assignment @readingclaygirl !

DS reports that he has been elected to a leadership position for his frat next year. Sounds like he made a great choice about joining and is having a great time!

Glad to hear everyone seems to be enjoying and doing well in their first year of college. I have not posted much, but enjoy reading what others have shared as they seem very similar to our experiences. Especially the comment about getting a ā€œsnarkyā€ or sullen response from unwanted advice. I have had to spend much of the year biting my tongue as I listen to dā€™s adventures. She seems to enjoy over-committing herself, and then running all over the place to stay on top of things. She shares her adventures and it makes me feel like pulling my hair out or banging my head against the wall. I have learned to give very limited feedback and let her learn from her mistakes.

The week before last, she attended the UDA national collegiate dance team nationals in Daytona Beach. They got to the airport at 5:30 AM and they had a 14 hour flight delay. She was getting pretty upset because it didnā€™t look like they were going to make it to the competition that was the following day. I sent her text that she was not in control of the situation; the only thing she had control over was using her time waiting to get her school work done. The coach took pics of the girls in the airport and I was pleased to see that she was sitting there on the floor of the airport with her books out, studying. They did finally get to Daytona at 2:30 AM. This is the second year of competing and they did well and placed in the top 10. However, I was really happy when she called me last week and let me know that she got As on all three of her make-up midterm exams. Yeah for persistence :).

Hello all. Itā€™s been a while since Iā€™ve been on CC. Soon after my sweet girl headed off to college I had a cancer scare. Thank God after two surgeries and a few CT Scans I am all better now. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the first year which is rapidly coming to a close!!

Hello everyone! I hope all that celebrate had a nice Easter. We enjoyed a weekend visiting DD16 and family. We have started to move things into the new apartment and have only a couple more weeks of classes and finals to go.

@labegg I had a similar conversation about chemistry with my DD.
