@Cheeringsection thank you for your thoughts.
@momofsmartdancer I’ve made her check in with me every 4-5 hours. She also has to meet with the trainer every day to evaluate her cognitively. The school does have services in place to assist with anything from a golf cart to take her to and from classes to given extra time for class work. Her teachers were informed immediately. I’m sure every university has something similar. I keep reiterating to her to be honest as to how she is feeling. No need to try and push it when it comes to her brain. These kids think they are invincible. Didn’t we all at that age?
She viewed the video with the trainer and coach and they could not tell what caused her to go down. The coach thought her leg was broken due to the hit she took was to her legs. They only thing they could come up with was that she was hit so hard that it jarred her brain enough to knock her out. The team they played against is known to be the most injury causing opponent. They had 2 other girls also get hurt. One with a broken finger and one with a fractured nose. Crazy. She needs to conclude she needs to find another athletic avenue.
We’ll see how she feels today during and after classes.
Yikes, that’s so scary! Being far away is awful in that kind of situation. I hope she continues to feel better and that she follows all doctor’s orders for as long as it takes!
@psychmomma thank you.
Gotta say, I’m questioning the care of the doctor who saw her at the school health center 2 days ago. She was told she didn’t need to be seen again by them and to follow the trainers advice. She is still having headaches. Thankfully, they are not causing her to miss class.
Why would they not want to follow up while headaches are still present?
I know the trainers are “trained” on concussion protocol. But, how does an md say she’s good to go while she is still symptomatic??
@cardinal2020mom Hope she is in the mend!
@cardinal2020mom I hope your daughter continues to improve - how worried you must be! Hopefully things go much better for her next week.
DS let us know he’ll leave Wednesday to go back to campus. He doesn’t start classes until Monday, but lives in an apartment and is eager to get back, unpack, grocery shop, and relax in his room for a bit before school starts. We’ll definitely miss him! All break he kept begging me and DD18 to go with him to learn how to ski, since it’s his new favorite hobby. I was pretty nervous to try it for the first time at my age, but as my friend said - if your college son wants to hang out with you - DO IT! She was right - he spent the whole time helping DD and me rent equipment, figure out how to put on the boots and then skis, helped us over to our lesson and watched most of it, then came back and skied the bunny slope and taught us how to get on/off the ski lift. For the last half of the night, he took DD along with some friends they ran into, and they all skied the green trails with DD so that she could learn how to do it safely with them guiding her. It was a great way for them to bond before he heads back to school, but of course now she will miss having him around even more!
I guess we go back to a house of 3 in just a few days - why is the departure after winter break so hard :(?
Yikes! Anyone else have kids thinking about grad school already? DD has changed her plans yet again now she plans to graduate a year early (2019) with BS in Meteorology and minors in Math and Comp Sci. She plans to go to grad school and is looking at a programs that focus on 3-D modeling or environmental science. So this time next year she’ll be submitting grad school apps!
@3scoutsmom Yes, to grad school. D has already spoken to her advisor about options in regards to schools to consider for her area of interest. She is also on track to graduate in 2019. We have no objection to her adding a minor and dragging it out a fourth year because of her generous scholarship. No decisions have been made, but last time we spoke, she was looking at options for study abroad senior year.
@cardinal2020mom I hope your D feels 100% soon.
@lifegarding That ski story is very sweet.
Mine’s considering taking a co-term route. Would apply Jr year. Would like to stay where he is.
I love that ski story!!! No talk of grad school for S who plans to work when finished with his CS and Linguistics degree. My older S swore he would never go to grad school. So he worked for 3 years - and is now in grad school at Oxford. LOL! Never say never.
Our son is a CIS major, so also no plans for grad school. I think he’d actually have done just as well with a 2 year degree since he is not one to study at all, but because his program is in the business school, the bachelor’s degree will provide him with many more job options.
No talk of grad school here. I am hoping to hear about a summer internship arranged dinner though!
DS is going to do the three-years, and apply to grad school next year too. He’s signed up for the GREs, I think in June?
I thought you could take the GRE any time at a testing center like CLEP and didn’t have to wait for a test date like the SAT.
That may be so, but you still have to sign up in advance (for when you are in the right city and have transportation)
Finally, an actual interview! Ok, it is by phone, but it is still an interview offered in response to his resume!! Keep your fingers crossed.
@Cheeringsection
Hope things went well for your son.
D sent out about 30 applications for summer research internships and she got 2 offers! And, they are paid and include housing and transportation also. She was so busy, she told me she had been up for 32 hours straight because of having 3 exams and the applications all due by 1/31. Glad that this process is over with. Another stepping stone completed.
@momofsmartdancer initial interview went well enough that he has a 2nd one over spring break. Congrats to your DD on her offers! I hope to be celebrating an offer for my DS by mid-March.
Time to chose housing for junior year is fast approaching! First, has sophomore year flown by? Second, I am curious how many have the option for full apartments now (on or off campus). Finally, is your DC so ready for whatever the next option is or would they be happy to stay right where they are?
DS16 will be in a "double single " on campus apartment . He will be with his current roommate . They will each have a single room, shared bathroom , kitchen and living room. He’s very excited to be able to cook. He’s happy to have good on campus options @Cheeringsection
