Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

My D is in an on campus apartment this year. Next year she moves to an off campus apartment. I think she is having a good time. Certainly not ready to be out in the adult world fully!

D is in an off campus apartment this year, and has re-signed her lease with the same roommates, for next year. One of her roommates has dogs so she gets daily dog therapy.

We let her take the extra car to campus this year and she loves it. She has a weekend job at a hospital and itā€™s convenient to drive there instead of taking the bus.

She told us she is staying down there for the summer, since she has her job and will be paying rent anyways.

Iā€™m happy to see her confidence and see her build a life for herself, even while itā€™ feels weird to not have any kids home.

Yes, @Cheeringsection - it is hard to believe that in a few short months they will be finished with year 2. This year has gone by very quickly.
DS is moving out of the dorm into an apartment with 2 other friends from his honors group. They had to search & sign a lease in the fall- it was crazy! I think he is very ready to have more space & his car.
Our spring break is in 2 weeks so, it will be nice to have a visit!

Wishing everyone the best for the remainder of the spring semester!

DD will be moving back into her off campus apartment after she gets back from Germany. Sheā€™s decided to graduate in 3 years so next year will be her senior year. Sheā€™s already started researching graduate programs. Iā€™d love her to stay at OU for grad school since her current scholarship covers 5 years but she wants to explore other options.

@3scoutsmom

Our D is also on track to be done in three years. Although her scholarship doesnā€™t pay for grad school, it would pay for a 4th year. She could add a minor, and ā€œdrag it outā€ for four years, maybe studying abroad. I donā€™t know if she has decided what sheā€™ll do yet.

I tend to think, ā€œWhatā€™s the hurry?ā€, but itā€™s not my life!

NIce to read the updates. Wishing everyone well.

My D is on track to graduate in three years as well.

She is planning on an on-campus apartment next year. She just wants a kitchen! Sheā€™s studying abroad this semester and enjoying cooking for herself.

I also enjoy reading the updates.

My D will stay in campus housing next year; most students do. She has found a great internship for this summer, which also means she wonā€™t spend much time at home. I canā€™t believe that our kidsā€™ college experience is almost half over. It just doesnā€™t seem that long since we were waiting for decisions on this list.

S signed a lease for next fall back in October with 3 fraternity brothers for a house about a mile off campus. We got to see the outside of it last weekend when we went to visit him, itā€™s cute and has a big yard. They also have a video tour so we could see the layout. This year heā€™s been in an on campus apartment with a partial meal plan. Problem is, he still doesnā€™t cook so I think heā€™s not eating well except when he gets his dining hall meals. Hopefully he can learn a few recipes this summer. I canā€™t believe itā€™s almost spring break!

Wow so many DC ready to graduate in 3 years! I certainly understand the desire to get started on grad school but not sure about giving up on college life otherwise. I am also looking forward to having DS Home soon for spring break. That is when we will find out more about what housing he is planning for next year. Regardless it will be on campus but could be a suite or apartment. Does not matter to me which he picks but I am always interested in seeing the impact on his college fund balance. [-O< $-) :-SS

I am pretty sure DS could finish in 3 years- but, he is having too much fun. He has definitely found ā€˜his people.ā€™

When I look back at his high school experience, I think he was just much different that most everyone else- never had super close friends or an active social life. He is now is his element. Very happy for him.

Plus since I took 5 years- Iā€™ll give him 4 before grad school.

Long time since my last update. D is doing very well. She seems to have overcome her problems from earlier in the year. She is still on meds but is no longer in counseling. Not sure if this is good or bad, but the school offers a limited amount of individual counseling sessions and then sends you to group counseling, but all the groups that had openings conflicted with her class schedule so she just decided to not bother. So far she seems fine. In fact, she seems so fine that she will be doing study abroad this summer. We had originally said no way, but then she had several good friends doing it and she seemed OK, so she applied and was accepted. The doctor prescribing her meds also gave her OK. And so D will be spending the summer in Shanghai.

Housing for next year isnā€™t completely set yet but she and a group of friends are planning to get an on-campus apartment style unit. I think room selection is this week and she tells me that her group is 7th on the list so they should have their pick of what is available.

All in all this year has turned out pretty well, especially given the bumpy start.

DD is on a path to finish in 3 years if she takes only classes required for her major, but it is not her goal. Her school offers so many classes outside straight path for her major that she is intended to take after she is done with basic requirements for her major. Graduate school in her major normally does not make a difference in career growth or future earnings potential so at this point it is a question if she will do it. At least right after undergrad. The financial aspect of the fourth year is somewhat covered by her earning during her summer/ winter internships and now her part time remote job with the company she was interning this winter for.

As far as the housing she will stay on campus. She was in cook for yourself dorm since her freshman year. With activities she is involved in she does not have time to cook. She might move to the other part of campus next year, but not sure yet.

Her spring plans are not finalized yet, but she will be at home the entire summer since she found an internship half an hour away from our house. That will be a nice change for once. I didnā€™t see her for longer then two weeks since she started college last year.

So good to hear how everyone is doing!

DD just booked her flight home for springbreak. Canā€™t wait to see her! She has arranged an off campus apartment with 2 other girls next year. It is practically palatial compared to my first few apartments! Sje lost out on a summer internship last week. Has an interview about an on-campus summer position next week that I am hoping she secures because it will make life soooo much easier! She has a resume out for a summer teaching job with the YMCA system near her school, so it looks like she will not be coming home this summer, except to attend her sisterā€™s HS graduation. School seems to be going reasonably well. She still has to take oā€™chem so I will worry until that is out of the way!

Weā€™re still waiting to hear back on some summer job leads, but DS asked to come home for Passover this year and that made his mom smile

Housing is set for next fall! DS got the apartment he wanted and the price point that is gentler on the college fund. His mandatory meal plan goes down by 40% as well, but of course, at least half of that will go towards groceries so not all a savings. I think he will eat better for lessā€”if he learns to prepare a few meals this summer. Maybe I should put him in charge of dinner 1 night a week. :-?

I just want to vent about air travel and weather and my frustrations with it. I had posted before that every time my D traveled there seemed to be weather issues. Well, spring break starts tomorrow and D was supposed to be on a flight home this afternoon. Right on schedule, we have a major storm messing things up. She was able to change to a flight tomorrow for free so Iā€™m keeping fingers crossed that goes as planned. Iā€™m about ready to tell S19 that if he canā€™t get to a school easily by bus, train or automobile, he canā€™t apply there.

@me29034 D14 is in Chicago and has never had more than a couple hours delay. D16s BF is in Florida and has had one travel disruption after another. Hurricanes, randomly cancelled flights, other weather, weather in other places. And he hasnā€™t even been in college two years. Heā€™s also flying today to the northeast and worried his flight will get cancelled.

D16 is studying abroad in Europe this semester. Sheā€™s been really sick with mono. Not the diagnosis she wanted right now, or ever, but at least now she knows she has to stop and rest. Sheā€™s missed this week of class. Hoping next week is better. Iā€™m wishing I was there to help her out.

My D16 flies home most vacations (11 hour drive, so end of year we do pick up). Never a significant weather delay yet! But could happen at any moment of course. I really work on getting her direct flights which is not always easy. Or I have her change in places we have friends/family just in case.

First time my S16ā€™s flight was ever cancelled. He was supposed to come home tonight. The next direct flight we could get him on is for tomorrow at 5pm. I donā€™t like that we lose a day with him, but thereā€™s nothing we can do.
