Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

The flight my D was originally scheduled on this afternoon was cancelled, as well. She is now scheduled out at 8:30 tomorrow morning. I am hoping that goes OK. There is supposedly a high wing warning in effect for Boston until 10am tomorrow so its really on the edge.

What a difference a year makes! Last year I got push back from DS because I insisted he shave and wear a collared shirt for an interview. This year, he is planning on a suit, white shirt, and tie without any prompting. Even if he does not get the job, he has learned something from all this!

Son is in the midst of the internship-2018 adventure. Has had to decline one offer due to insufficient pay. Three interviews scheduled for this week. Fingers crossed.

DD has secured a summer internship, Yay! Unfortunately that means she wonā€™t be coming homeā€¦

DD called home in tears a few weeks ago. Nothing was particularly wrong as far as I could tell but she was so stressed about not having anything set up for summer. Turns out that she had applied for many things, but hadnā€™t heard back yet and not knowing her summer plan was very stressful. Well, as of Monday she has secured one option, a paid research internship at her school. Yay! It is great on many levels. She is waiting to hear from her other options, but thinks this is likely what she will do. That means we wonā€™t see her until August as she will be off with friends for a spring break trip. Sigh, but Iā€™m happy for her.

Securing an internship on your own is so difficult. Lots of competition!

Things looking up now. Son now has 2 verbal offers in hand. Awaiting details from HR. Still has 4 interviews scheduled over the next week. Will be traveling for one (heā€™s very interested in this one). A few paid research positions are also in the mix (2 of which are also very desirable). Busy week.

D16 has a summer internship in hand, though not her first choice. She is understanding that sometimes you have to be grateful with what you have secured. Also, she recently learned she will be an RA next year. Weā€™re pretty stoked!

DS will arrive home tonight. Looking forward to having him home for a week.
He will be off to Ann Arbor this summer for an REU, but it is only for 8 weeks- last summerā€™s internship was 12 weeks long so, he will be home more this summer. Happy Mom.

D applied for a bunch of REUs and internships. It was basically crickets until yesterday when she got a yes from a great REU at Notre Dame. Iā€™m not happy she wonā€™t be home for the summer but everything else about it is very good. Logistics should be very manageable. Glad itā€™s settled. Sheā€™s not coming home for spring break as sheā€™s studying abroad. Instead, weā€™re going to her. Excited about that!

Keep those finger crossed a bit longer for my DS16! Phone interview went well. In person interview went well. Now they are confirming there is room for 1 more intern. Offers are out to others (we think a year closer to graduation) but a spot is his if one is available. We agreed he needs to keep looking until he hears for sure but he REALLY wants this internship. He plans to accept it even if they can only offer half the summer. I hope they let him know soon!!! [-O<

DS arrives home later this week for spring break (yay!) so I have to gently nudge him again to apply for the summer internship he had last year. I happened to run into the person he worked for last summer, and it sounds like they have a great new IT person who will be a good mentor for DS since heā€™s a CIS major. Hopefully it will work out - DS has been lucky in the past with jobs/internships so I donā€™t think he realizes that it can often take a long time. Iā€™m hoping that his current situation of running low on money will encourage him to find a job :). It will be great to have him home for a bit!

I know itā€™s been awhile since I posted. Kids are doing well. D is transferring this fall to one of the state unis and applying for the BFA in graphic design next spring. Sheā€™ll be living on campus, which will be new. Sheā€™ll also be a year behind, but itā€™s where she wants to be. The slow path has worked really well for her and Iā€™m glad she turned down Expensive Private LAC two years ago. It was a fairly good fit, but she wasnā€™t ready for it.

S is in England and doesnā€™t want to come home. I think heā€™s aged five years this semester, and he dresses and talks like a Brit. He spent spring break traveling and has scheduled two more long weekends (Amsterdam and Malta). Heā€™s also learned to cook and has decided to take classes in Korean when he gets back. His legislator (last yearā€™s internship) wants him back this fall, and he starts taking grad classes in the spring, so heā€™ll be busy. And harking back to a question upstream, heā€™s going to be living on campus again: his dorm is apartment-style anyway and really, really convenient.

S is home this week for spring break. Between visiting relatives, seeing friends, and homework, this week will go by fast. He and his friends are still deciding on an apartment for next fall. Luckily there are plenty in their town to choose from. My older S in England doesnā€™t want to come home either! Heā€™s there until late July to get his Masterā€™s, but is trying to find a job so he can stay overseas longer. He just loves traveling over there. This is his spring break too - but he has a month! He has visits to six countries, then a few more weekend trips before he either comes home or moves to his next location.

Itā€™s hard to wrap my mind around our kids being halfway through college, give or take. The time is flying by.

@psychmomma I know, itā€™s crazy-D is picking her classes for her junior year soon! It seems like we were all just waiting on them to choose their colleges! As we expected, last summer was her last one at home-sheā€™ll be a ā€œteaching residentā€ for a summer program in New Orleans, then probably going back to Nashville to whatever apartment she finds in her current search (although she is putting down a deposit for a dorm room just in case). She just got approved as a substitute teacher and has her first gig on Friday, and already has a school district she talked with at this semesterā€™s career fair courting her. It IS going fast, but itā€™s been a wonder watching it all.

I agree that the time is flying by! The school has already posted the calendar that includes graduation?!?

S will be leaving for campus tomorrow, but weā€™ve had a great time while he was here: hit some great restaurants, and discussed the pros/cons of internship offers. In the end he chose what he felt was the most interesting. In an added bonus he was accepted into a very competitive research program. Heā€™ll be returning to campus with a smileā€¦

Does anyone besides me begin to dread the last 2-3 weeks of a semester because suddenly their rather calm, well organized young adult suddenly goes off the deep end? It is definitely a pattern that I am noticing. I begin to dread the phone call or text notification because there is often some angst. It is quite a roller coaster! I swear I worry now more than ever!

I did with one of my other kids, but this S doesnā€™t really let us know how things are going. Heā€™s usually tense when he gets home though, until grades are posted! His lack of contact doesnā€™t stop me from worrying. I just donā€™t know if my worrying is warranted.

It doesnā€™t seem possible that two years ago at this time we were waiting for so many of our kiddos to get off the SS Indecision! And here they are, DONE with their sophomore year and headed into their last half of college. Sseakid is no kid anymore-she is an 18.5 yo woman whoā€™s officially a substitute teacher for the Nashville school district (where she is working as I speak) and will teach her own 4-week class in New Orleans this summer. Finals ended yesterday and she finished strong with all Aā€™s and one B. Weā€™re bringing her home for the time between graduation (sheā€™s an ambassador for the visiting alumni) and the teaching gig so that she can decompress. Sheā€™ll have a few weeks in July off, then itā€™s back to school to train as an ambassador, orientation leader and member of the student government board that plans special events. Weā€™re lucky weā€™ll see her at all. She is our last one, so DH and I are enjoying being the only ones in the house, but I sure am glad sheā€™s coming home at least for a bit. Good luck to all of your kids still gearing up for finals, and hope everyone has a great summer!
