Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Thanks @bookmom62 .

So
just cancelled our hotel and dog boarding reservations for graduations as the ceremony is postponed, prob. cancelled.

Determined to make the best of it, I called President’s office and suggested they do an online ceremony and read off the names of the graduates and include head-shot picture of each graduate while calling their name. Most probably will not care, but some might like some type of recognition ceremony.

My D’s graduation has also been postponed. They say they will reschedule for a date sometime in the future. It all seems surreal.

Our student’s grad program was supposed to start beginning of June & she is wondering if the everything will change.

My D is supposed to start pharmacy rotations in May.

Hoping for the best

The president of DS16’s University is retiring this year. This is his last class of seniors. He sent out a video message today to the seniors and their parents promising that there will be a grad ceremony and he will pass out the diplomas. Made me cry—for all of us. We will get through this but we do need to mourn a few things as we adjust to it all.

My S16 college has postponed graduation ceremony until August. We shall see.

I haven’t followed for a while but have been thinking of everyone as events have changed dramatically over the past month. Our S stayed in his apartment over spring break and won’t come home now. (Lease goes until August.) His campus went to online only classes, then said students could come back to the dorms, then reversed a few days later with asking all who could to move back home. His campus has a large international population so the dorms are still open for kids who really can’t go anywhere else.

There seem to be very few people on campus now, so S is probably as safe there as he would be here. Graduation was canceled, then after 10k signed a petition to postpone/reschedule, it seems the admins. will try to do that when it is safe, in the future.

My elderly, frail mom lives with us, so keeping her exposure to germs minimized is my top priority now. I really miss having the ability to hug each of my kids right now! The other two are working from home, also in shelter-at-home states.

My oldest starts grad school in August. I wonder how this will play out by then.

I moved my daughter out of her dorm on the East Coast last week and drove her things across country where she will live with her older sister in the Southwest while completing school. it was all super sad and so abrupt. I’m not sure that it has all sunk in for her (or any of us) yet. Graduation is not yet officially cancelled but I can’t imagine that it will proceed.

.

DS16’s graduation is now officially postponed. I knew it was coming but still disappointing. Let’s just hope the rescheduled date does not conflict with something else because I will not miss this graduation!

@Cheeringsection us too! I am truly hoping that this is able to be rescheduled. I’m ok with doing it later, etc, as long as it happens!

My d is still in her off-campus apartment with her roommate who can’t go home because it is a 2-3 day drive. Her gap-year job before med school has been postponed or canceled. I got some balloons for the mailbox and a cake to celebrate her graduation when she comes home. We were hoping to go to Europe to celebrate her graduation (never been before), but that is now on hold- prob permanently.
Hope everyone is staying safe and hoping people can go back to work soon.

Re: stimulus check for graduating college students
This article says that if they provide more than half of their own support for the rest of this year, they will qualify for the stimulus $ in the form of a tax credit on the 2020 tax filing.

@momofsmartdancer Yes, isn’t that one of the criteria that have to be met for them not being able to be claimed by their parents as a dependent for tax purposes?

Yes. However, many are not aware that the stimulus checks/ $ are actually credits on your 2020 taxable earnings and someone can still get the money in the form of a tax credit in the future even if they don’t get a check now.

My D is also still at school in her apartment. She seems happy so I think it was the right choice to stay. She would be miserable here. Yesterday she called with good news and bad news. The good news was that she received an invite to join Phi Beta Kappa and the honors college was taking care of the fees. The bad news is that someone in her building has been diagnosed with Covid-19. The person is apparently self-isolating in their apartment.

@me29034 CONGRADS on the good news and hoping the bad news turns better soon!

Has anyone started to think about how to celebrate graduations this spring?

@Rivet2000 We have not tackled the graduation aspect, but are getting ready to host a “social distancing senior week” at home, complete with BBQ, brunch, casino night, trivia night and an “olympics”. It won’t be the same, but its something.

DS16 would have graduated on 5/2, so senior week is next week for him.
