Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@Midwest67 - hope you all get answers to make a good decision.
Will your S/D get to visit the schools?- might be a source for answers.

My DS is also headed to grad school in the fall & we are looking at different offers- $, teaching duties, years covered, insurance, etc. Has a different feel than undergrad decision, somehow. He also is scheduled to visit Caltech & Berkeley in a couple of weeks- pending this virus outbreak!

Everyone stay safe & healthy as we approach 2020 graduation!

@bookmom62

Some schools are a plane ride away & we cannot afford to fly her out for a visit.

2 schools are in the Midwest & within 5-6 hours of where she is at college. She could drive & visit either or both.

Since she will be borrowing in order to pay whatever is not covered by funding, she needs to dial in & own the decision.

Understandably, she is a little overwhelmed & itā€™s hitting her that she will be parting ways with her friends soon.

She adopted a dog last year, which adds a wrinkle to housing options.

Iā€™m relieved she was not shut out and has some choices with some funding ā€” even if itā€™s not as transparent as one would hope.

@Midwest67 completely understand. Hope she can connect (remotely) with other students & professors to get helpful information about each program and clear cost.

Wishing your DD the best of luck making her final decision!

Hey, All. Great to hear from you.
Daughter nixed the idea of staying on the extra year, so she will be graduating and more than likely staying in the area. We have had such little time with her since the summer after freshman year.

She has definitely carved out a space for herself out in the world and knows how to juggle, negotiate, vie, keenly assess, touch center and find her own pulse. (All of which is to say she forced me to recognize I can partner with her but she is definitely calling the shots.)

This year my final kiddo heads out and there are some dusty old manuscripts that will need to be pulled from the dark places they were buried so I would not hear them whisper to me.

@Waiting2exhale

Manuscripts? Can you tell us a little more?

We have also had very little time with our daughter since she left for college. She stopped coming home for the summers sophomore year.

She has never been one to share much. Iā€™m surprised she asked for help navigating her grad school choices!

I really do like having the kids out of the house and having them in charge of their own lives. Long overdue ā€œme timeā€.

I hope the virus does not start to impact commencement ceremonies.

@Rivet2000 We have already heard from our S16 that that powers that be are already considering canceling the ceremony scheduled for 5/2/20. So sad, but understandable.

@Rivet2000: I will assume you received news this evening of the cancellation of in-class activity, with all class meetings and instruction happening on-line.

I donā€™t really know what that bodes for June commencement, but I am preparing for an address to parents, attached to a note which tips toward ā€œan abundance of caution.ā€

I am preparing for that, and the air seeping out of the one shiny balloon I know my daughter would ever have allowed us to have in her honor.

(Praying for a reversal of the winds.)

@Midwest67: ā€œ@Waiting2exhale: Manuscripts? Can you tell us a little more?ā€

Long ago I wrote and did public readings of my poetry. Long ago I read, and found love and joy, in othersā€™ poetry. That type of living, that type of ā€¦ sensing and engaging ā€¦ the world around me, I shelved.

I donā€™t even think Iā€™d begin to write anything new for a long stretch, just edit the strongest pieces and submit a few for publication.

@Waiting2exhale

That sounds like a worthwhile project! Best to you!

@Waiting2exhale Yes, our S texted last night with that news. But there was more than just no in-person classes or finals. Two students are in self quarantine pending test results that should be completed sometime today. Additionally, their admitted student weekend has been cancelled and all campus tours stopped.

Luckily, classes are ramping down anyway. He has one pset and a paper due this week and then only two finals next week. Our plan was that after finals he would meet us in Las Vegas for his sisters soccer tournament. But, once he gets clarity in the overall class/final plans we think heā€™ll just fly home early (I also think that the extremely large soccer tournament in Las Vegas will be cancelled ).

THEN, this morning we find that a Stanford Medical School faculty member has tested positive for covid-19. And, would you know it, this is the one quarter where he actually had a class in the Stanford Medical School complex.

Iā€™ve kind of expected this, especially in California schools, but I am a little nervous about what comes next. What happens next quarter? And, yes how about commencement? It a little selfish, but Iā€™ve been looking forward to his commencement - Stanford has been a magical place for him.

Well, our S is flying home from Stanford this afternoon 2 weeks early. His remaining pset and paper will be turned in remotely (but they typically turn in class work via computer anyway). Heā€™ll take two finals at home and upload them as well. Will be good to have him home. Fingers crossed that the spring quarter runs as usual.

@Rivet2000 : Nope ^^, spring quarter will not run as usual. How prescient of you to get him home early.

@Waiting2exhale Over dinner son says ā€œJust got an email, looks like Iā€™m staying home longerā€. Now wondering about summer (dorm for internship) and fall (starting Masters). Fun, fun.

Villanova has yet to make any changes. DD is hoping her senior year continues without pause because she wants to make every moment count on campus. With that being said, they have Plan B ready to go if online classes are instituted with $49 flights to FL, I think their alternative campus may involve a beach and boat drinks!

How is everyone doing?

I donā€™t think we could have asked for a more bizarre end to this undergraduate ā€œcruise.ā€

Take care & special ā€˜healthyā€™ thoughts for all. Donā€™t forget to Wash you Hands!

Sadly DD has been evicted from her home away from home today. Still hoping and praying cooler heads will prevail and healthier times ahead will lead to a real graduation on campus in May as planned. Who knew this cruise would end with getting tossed off the boat before we officially dock?

Hello everyone. Havenā€™t posted for awhile, but have continued to follow this thread.
Not really sure what to share anymore as my d has gotten to be very independent and is not really sharing much info about her immediate plans with me. Since she is on full scholarship, she is essentially paying her own way and doesnā€™t really consult us on much.

Her university announced this weekend that graduation ceremonies are cancelled. :(.
D says she is not upset. She is planning on med school after a gap year and says the ā€œWhite Coat Ceremonyā€ is much more important to her. Besides, she got her last college hurrah by going to Vegas and Southern California with a bunch of college friends before Coronavirus took hold of our country.

My next big worry is that I found out she applied and was accepted for the Peace Corp. I know when I was younger, I naively though that once kids are adults, they are for the most part, perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. I guess one of my biggest surprises as a parent is that I continue to worry, in spite of them being grown and pretty capable. Now I am really worried about the idea of her going to a foreign country where the medical care is not so good during this Covid-19 outbreak.

Our S is upstairs In his old bedroom taking a final. Strange days.

@momofsmartdancer -we will always be their parents but adjusting to the different role when they are an adult can be difficult! You are not alone.
Hoping she has a safe, productive, & worthwhile gap year and then forges ahead with the next step of her plan.
