Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@CoyoteMom, fabulous! Thank you so much for posting!

@CoyoteMom that sounds absolutely wonderful on every level! Makes me even sadder that I couldn’t convince S to apply there.

@CoyoteMom Sounds like it was a great fit! D and I really like it too and it seems like a good fit but they gave the lowest grant/need based and we would end up paying a LOT more.

We just got back the financial aid from Wooster and they are in line with Kalamazoo so that is two that will be a little bit of a stretch but definitely a possibility. Just waiting to hear back from UNCG on aid, if we get any at all. If she commutes the first year, it will definitely be affordable and she can continue working at Starbucks here which she really enjoys. We will see.

@CoyoteMom So I had to take a look at where Beloit was since I’d never heard of it. Southern Wisconsin… that is a nice area.

My older D (now out of college) ended up getting into to Carroll University, which is a few counties north. We went to see it about 5 years ago in the middle of January. (She didn’t go.) It was one of these admitted weekends and they made it very appealing. It was beautify IMO coming from S. California. Just a nice dusting of snow while we were there. Because it was a lot cheeper to fly into Chicago we spend a day being a tourist in Chicago first. (Long weekend from school.) There really are some nice small LAC’s in that area. 60 degree’s in February is not likely to be normal around there.

Is this near where you live?

@mackatarinasmom Ooh, glad the aid from Wooster was good. D17 got good merit aid from them and I really love what I have read about them…she’s thinking it’s a bit far [we are in MA] but it really isn’t all THAT far, just a quick flight. Am hoping to get her out there to look at it before she makes her final decision.

S17 was accepted at CU Boulder today!!!

He is still saying he won’t even try to decide till all applications are in. Although we know his safety is off the table. Still waiting on Cal Poly (unlikely at this point didn’t get in during the first wave of acceptances from last week), UC Santa Cruz and UC Davis. Won’t hear from the later two till mid-March.

Of course Boulder and UofO are his most $$ options. And I haven’t heard anything about any merit (unlikely… I do expect something small from OSU) or FA (don’t expect much) from any of the schools. We finished the FAFSA back in November, I’m surprised we haven’t heard anything from UofO. Wonder if I need to reject the FAFSA.

@93pilots - how did Son’s Trinity U visit go? Very cool that he went on the visit himself (is Trinity U the one in Texas? Or Connecticut?)

@rienrah - ooh - can you share what your Son thinks about Beloit now, after first semester? Did he enjoy hosting? What one thing does he know now about Beloit that he really wishes he knew before?

@eandesmom - don’t worry about Beloit, because for your very musically talented son, I think you’ll find a better fit elsewhere - compared to some other colleges, there just wasn’t much emphasis on music, though I did think their almost in-the-round theater facility was very nifty. Also, just for you - the Beloit president’S speech was good/motivational/good marketing value (say an 8 out of 10) but I personally was really more impressed with the presentation I heard from Goucher’s President (say a 9.9 out of 10), which has stuck with me even though I heard it more than a year ago.

@mackatarinasmom - so sorry the Beloit FA isn’t up to what you really need – we’re very pleased because CoyoteSon is getting very nice merit, but many schools are better at either one or the other

@Fishnlines29, @tacocat333, @curiositycat333 and anyone I missed - yes, so happy to have found a school that loves CoyoteSon and seems like a such good fit for him. Bummer that it’s not within driving distance from VA - but that was the criteria we decided to bend in search of the elusive fit. The direct flight to Chicago was an easy 90 minute-ish flight, and another 75 minutes to drive from airport, so I think it’s doable. Will wait to see if he gets any more acceptances before deciding if he wants any more overnight visits over spring break.

I’m still going to the Mason Honors event on Saturday, even though CoyoteSon will be at the Robotics State Championship…at least he doesn’t need an overnight for the school located 20 minutes from our house (he stayed in the dorms for a week after sophomore year).

And congrats to @mackatarinasmom on great aid from both Wooster and Kalamazoo,and to @curiositycat333’S son on acceptance to CU Boulder! Way to go!!

@CoyoteMom , if Beloit stays of interest to your son and you, and you have any questions about Wisconsin, please let me know. I’m a lifer!

@curiositycat333 --Congratulations to your S on CU Boulder!!! In CS? Still waiting for CU here. It fits so many of S17’s criteria, so crossing fingers. Also no news from from the first wave of SLO, so unlikely here as well.

@CoyoteMom --so great to find “the one”.

@mackatarinasmom --good news on the merit aid, congrats!

Update on the AP Calc drop outcome so far.

S17 FINALLY emailed the schools sunday night. I swear it felt like he was 2 weeks late but it was really only 4 days and 2 of those on the weekend. He did provide a short explanation and then for one school that stated they wanted 4 years of HS math, took it a bit further (technically he has 4.5 as Alg 1 was in middle school).

Responses so far were as follows.

Accepted at 7, notified 6 as one school has since fallen off.

2 out of office replies with no direct contact yet.

1 “thanks for letting us know, we will update your file”

1 “thanks for letting us know and best wishes for a strong finish”

1 “thanks for letting us know, I see no issues on our end”

1 "thanks for letting us know. This will not have a negative impact to your candidacy to xxx college and I really appreciate your mature approach on this matter.

I will say the two that provided the reassuring statements (about lack of impact) went up in my book, that was very thoughtful and appreciated.

It’s cute, students from the schools for next weeks visits all seem to be checking in on S17 today. He’s recieved 2 calls and I’ve gotten some of my own.

@CoyoteMom aw, thanks for the note on the music. You may have a good point. I also wanted Lawrence, which looks lovely on the music side but he would have none of it. His close friend received a lovely offer there though.

@curiositycat333 congrats on Boulder! I really hope he goes and visits.

@mackatarinasmom wonderful news on Wooster!

@curiositycat333 , congrats on Boulder!
@mackatarinasmom , congrats on Wooster!
@eandesmom , I’m so glad to hear dropping calc appears to be a non-issue at your son’s college choices. What a relief!

In “I’ve Got This” and Struggling Calc Sons news – the “I’ve Got This” IB History paper of last week appears to have earned a solid B grade, which is excellent news for a kid who doesn’t adore history OR writing. Big relief and a vote of confidence.

On the other hand, he is panicking over multiple big things due this week. Clearly there are areas in which he still requires significant guidance and he needs to acknowledge those areas so we can address the issues now instead of next year at a five-figure tuition price tag. Calculus is currently a rather big concern and his teacher, while exhibiting an understanding of Struggling Sons (and daughters) in the past, appears to want him to buck up rather than coddling him by delaying a test in light of his other deadlines this week. I definitely see her point on this but it didn’t help TacoSon’s fragile state to get this response. I made him skip band today in order to work through a few assignments and not arrive at school in a high state of stress-induced agitation.

@tacocat333 HUGS! Sometimes skipping band is absolutely the right call. I hate those overload weeks and boy, it is those weeks when we really worry about the stress upcoming. I know part of it is teen hormones, lack of sleep, fear of the future and maturity but seeing overload and fragile states…you just want to fix it. And yeah, you want them to buck up. Good for you for making him skip, arriving at school all agitated can just torpedo the entire day as they then can’t focus on anything else.

It’s mostly a relief. We’ve not heard from the state schools (the out of office replies) but I know it’s not an issue at one and doubt that it is at the other. The only real “issue” if you can even call it that, is I feel any chances of leveraging offers may have gone down. Not that we will try…but we might.

@tacocat333 sending hugs too! The highest grade on the last calc test here was a 72. For some reason it took the teacher over 2 weeks to pass it back and then she never went over it with them. She let them partner up and compare answers but obviously no one did well so I don’t get it. Son actually got the only other C on the test in the class so I guess the “I got this” was legit. She offered extra credit to attend a lecture given at the local CC by the calculus prof there on baseball statistics and calculus. Son attended it last night and enjoyed it - so that’s good since track has also started and we need to help that grade out any way possible.

Not a good feeling though when she told us at the parent teacher conference that second semester was easier than first and this is how the class starts out.

And to add to the drama - she interrupted son and his friend when they were going over test to see if they were going to prom and offer to help them get dates.

@eandesmom , yes, state of mind can make or break one’s day. He was not in a good place this morning but was much improved after taking the morning to collect himself, look objectively at his to-do list, and get a head start on one assignment before heading to school 90 minutes later than usual. I also front loaded food because he tends not to eat when he’s upset – those are NOT my genes, seriously.

@eandesmom Glad to hear dropping Calc seems to be a done issue. Hope spring of senior year is a lot more relaxing for him this way.

@tacocat333 Good news the IB History paper. I’d call that a win in my house.

@tacocat333 S17 does the same thing (not eating) and not drinking water so then gets headaches on top of it.

then again, as does my tightly wound colleague this week…we’d have had a few more pleasant moments if she would drink water and eat when I tell her too. LOL!

@smakl70 seriously? Dates consultation? UGH

@smakl70 – missed your response earlier – glad your son’s grade was at the top of the stack! I feel like TacoSon’s 86 on the calc midterm ranks right up there with the 5 greatest days of my life, which is quite sad really. I sorely miss the end-of-first-semester complacency I enjoyed earlier this month, not to mention that short-lived confidence about his organizational skills …

@eandesmom I’ve seriously about had it with that teacher. Teach him and stay out of his personal life.

@tacocat333 I’m glad he was at the top too but when the high is that low I’m worried. These are the top kids in his grade and I was shocked. I love my kid but he’s never put forth the effort of his peers to be a top kid. He’s my laid back, surfer-attitude kid and after the up-tight, anxious kid I let it slide. If he’s pulling a top grade in there something is going wrong (especially when she point blank told husband and I that she wasn’t sure our son belonged in there).

I totally understand the calc midterm reaction. I LOVE to see my kids have success when the odds seem against them, wish it happened more often. Here’s to an easy, stress-free final semester!! (I can dream)

We also have good news! D was accepted at Muhlenberg ED for theater and will be attending in the Fall. She was also accepted at George Mason University (honors) and Mary Washington (honors), but has sent emails declining.

@CoyoteMom I had the same great experience with Goucher’s president at the info session we went to…wouldn’t think the prez would make time for those, really, so not sure if everyone gets so lucky…but he was very impressive and it has stuck with me as well.

@VAOptimist Congrats to your D on Muhlenberg! My D applied there RD so obviously haven’t heard anything yet. She visited with her dad so I haven’t seen it, but she had a very positive impression of it.
